This is where the series starts to discuss some very heavy and sometimes dark topics. It was surprising to me back then that a show would go there, but that is why I absolutly love it. Though you wanted that Helen would start the discussion on her own, I liked that it was Will's pleading that made her talk to Joan. I really feel his inner conflict between his fears caused by his work, his wish to protect Joan but also not wanting to cause more pain for his wife. And like you said in Kevis's arc, there will be a lot of "I understand her (his) motivation, but ..." moments in the future. Because if the show does not do one thing, it is black and white situations. It is always about decisions and the following ramifications. Anyway, if you are still onboard, we shall find out how god continues to make Joan's life difficult.

Fun fact - Clay (Joan's love interest in this episode) is played by Nate Dushku - Eliza Dushku's (Faith from Buffy) brother. He also plays a very small role in a Season 4 episode of Angel...so small it's uncredited, but it's him :-)
