Just so everyone knows. I love this show and the Hawaii 50 reboot. It’s not because I am totally besotted with Grace Park. I feel sure the other characters are somewhat reasonable.

Oh My Frakking Gods! I never saw this coming. Another great rewatchable show. If you do iZombie my life will be complete :)

Domi E

Who knows, maybe somebody will request it on the pilot tier!

Hey Domi, O. M. G. I LOVE this show. Seriously. In its own way its right up there with Buffy for me and that's a short list. And there have been very few people who have reacted to the miniseries. As far as the five season series goes I'm only aware of one other reactor so while I know you don't have time now perhaps you could react to it in the future. It's really a masterpiece. I'm not sure if you quite understood the scale of the Cylon attack yet because you kept using the word "city". It's not twelve cities on one planet, the colonies are twelve planets in four neighboring solar systems most of which are heavily populated. The total population of the colonies at the time of the attack was over thirty BILLION people (30,650,075,000). I'm sure you've already watched the second part so compare this to the number of survivors. It's quite stunning. Not to mention heartbreaking. The way part 2 ends makes you want to watch the series badly, at least it did for me. I watched the original version back in the 70's when I was a kid and it was a fun SciFi show but this! This is just brilliant. Very much looking forward to part two.

Totally agree about BSG being a genius show, and about it being a great opportunity for reactors, partly just because it's so great, but also cos I think there's a supportive (financially and otherwise) audience out there for it. The Buffy fans I know who watched Buffy 'live' back in the day were on the lookout for a great new show, and along came BSG (the following year?) and they all loved it almost as much.

I'd like to think there is an audience for BSG reactions. So few people have reacted to the miniseries and having thought about it I have seen two reactors who reacted to at least part of the series (but not all the way through) but the reactors (sorry to be critical) were not among the upper end of the reactor community so its hard to say. I imagine it's harder to comment on a show like BSG during the episode because it's just a much more serious show but Domi's facial expressions were very telling. 🙂 For me having had a wife and children, none of whom liked the same shows I did/do it's just nice to share the experience with someone whose company I've come to enjoy. I will say that if Domi ever has time to add another series then I can't think of a better one than this one.

Oh this is interesting. I don't know how much you know about the show - this was originally a TV series made in the late seventies to capitalise on the interest that Star Wars had generated. While it's plot was apparently very serious - and they cast a great lead as the Admiral, the show itself really very quickly became a schmaltzy mess - more childrens show than anything. This reboot really did kick it into the completely adult TV. The Reboot is far more interesting than the original in many, many ways.

Don't forget "Galactica 1980" if we're talking schmaltzy. 😂😂😂

Dave Ford

Do I have to remember it?

Domi E

Oh that's so awesome to hear, glad to know people dig this show!! And damn, that really is SO many more people than I could have imagined. So horrible! But yes I'll start reacting to the show on my pilot tier, so y'all will get 1 ep a month thanks to Briony :)

Domi E

Aw yay, glad you're enjoying!!

Domi E

Oh that's so interesting!! I def know nothing of the show, but it's interesting to know it seems better than the original!

Yyeeeeessssss!!! 😁🤩😁🤩 (sorry that was loud)

"there are survivors...." But they're on a planet where every major city has been nuked. If the radiation sickness and fallout doesn't get them, the nuclear winter will. If you ever want to watch a properly scary movie, find a copy of the 1983 BBC film 'Threads'. It's the most horrific film you'll ever see and will tell you everything you wish you didn't know about what's going to happen to the people left alive on Caprica and the other planets of the 13 colonies.

The "sir" thing seems to be an odd quirk of the show. It's not just the president who's addressed as "sir". It's how all the superior officers are addressed, regardless of gender. There were a few other female officers who were called "sir" before the president was. To my knowledge, we never learn why that is (someone correct me if I'm wrong), but I imagine that if their world is anything like ours, there was probably a time when women weren't allowed to serve in their military, so maybe "sir" as a catch-all form of address is a remnant from that time in their world. I'm certainly not defending its usage, but it probably alludes to the fact that the military is traditionally male-dominated.

Dave Ford

It's not the only area why the 'jargon' is a little off compared to our reality. Many of the military terms and behaviour used on Galactica seem to be taken from British Royal Navy and others from the US Navy, also there's a miss-mash of Naval and Army ranks used on her.

Domi E

Oh damn, I'm scared. That sounds intense!!!

Domi E

Yes! Exactly! I think what pissed me off about it is that it felt very antiquated and sexist to not evolve into the idea that people in charge can be women and therefore sir doesn't work for everyone in power!

palisade

I'm pretty sure sure Roslin is referred to as Madame President at other points in the series by non-military people. I suspect the "sir" thing is just a military quirk. In fairness there are very strong female characters throughout this series and the military seems to regard women and men equally. You may have noticed that the crew showers were co-ed for example.

6 just did a rewatch podcast called Battlestar Galacticast. Dec 15 episode has Jane Espenson—Buffy writer extraordinaire

I'm always surprised that more reactors don't do BSG as it's a fantastic series. So I'm really chuffed that one of my faves is reacting to it. Great reaction too. Really looking forward to Part 2.

Domi E

Yess! Really excited to keep watching!!!

Domi E

Oh that's so awesome!!!

Domi E

Aw yay :D Thank you!!!

I'm someone has maybe already said this but The Sir thing isn't a gendering thing in this case. It's a Military thing. A person in command is Sir whether male or female so like the US the President is the Commander and Chief so he is referring to her as Sir but then for the office of President we have Mr. President or Madame President so they would refer to her as Madame President.
