Oh Joss Whedon. First he's like, let me give you a little taste of what it feels like to have Spike back in an episode. Then he's like, now here's what it feels like to be stabbed in the heart with a spike.... Will watch later. Damn you, Joss, for turning Oz into an asshole because the actor wanted to leave the show. You petty, petty man.

Ron Fehr

Definitely a tearjerker episode. Seeing Willow cry made me cry.

Ron Fehr

I think the decision to leave the show may have caught Joss Whedon a little by surprise. Hence there wasn't much of a lead-in to this episode. I think normally something like this would have been easier to set up had it happened closer to mid-season. But my guess is that Joss had to make some quick changes leading up to this episode, so that the result wouldn't be a total surprise. You were spot-on when you predicted that Veruca could be a werewolf.

Foamy

Props to Paige Moss for playing Veruca really well.

Richard Ashton

Veruca "dresses like Faith, voice like an albatross." Also (Mainly UK usage) verruca a contagious and usually painful wart on the sole of the foot; a plantar wart.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

So at the time Seth Green expressed an interest in moving on to bigger projects and that's why he was written out. He wasn't super keen on basically showing up once every couple episodes, delivering a couple deadpan jokes and then calling it a day, which is understandable. Hence why this storyline had to be developed rather quickly. Kinda does Oz a little dirty but I feel it makes as much sense as it could have given the way it had to be written in. And we get the setup for potentially more Spike and army guys, which is a nice consolation prize.

Raven Dark

LOL, well put, Steve Quast.

Svetlana Grabar

Here's the part that drives me insane in this episode and makes me dislike Oz- the scene where they were sitting and having lunch. Oz should make Willow feel comfortable. Even if he wanted to continue the music talk, he could have given context like "Hi Willow, we're discussing yesterday's songs and amps." Just something. Obviously he loves Willow and usually they hold hands or something, but he basically ignored her.

zerofk

Nice prediction about her being a werewolf! Giles looked so excited when Buffy came to talk to him. I think he needs to feel useful, especially now that he doesn't have a job anymore. As for Veruca, most fans hate her but I kinda like her. I think her idea that they're the wolf all the time might not be that far off. Oz keeping it a secret is not good - but it does fit with when he first found out he was a werewolf and also didn't tell anyone. Although back then he had more of an excuse maybe.

CeNedra

Domi.e "yessss" Buffy "yesssss" Wild at Heart.. "Oh no"

Steve Quast

Parker's not human, so Buffy can slay him.

Denni Caid

Always. Without fail.

UTU49

Oz was too perfect anyway. Buffyverse characters all deserve equal opportunity to completely fuck up their own lives. :/

UTU49

"Although back then he had more of an excuse maybe." Yeah, I think that's fair. He didn't know the gang as well back then, and he was thrown into a new reality. THIS time however, he really needed to deal with this better than locking himself in a cage with a sexpot. Oz, I'm sorry man, but to a large extent here, you were thinking with your dangly bits. If I had a weird opportunity to lock myself in a cage with a horny Veruca, I would do it to... but that doesn't make it right. Right?

UTU49

Another vivid depiction of soul-crushing heartbreak. How delightful!

Steve Quast

Where's Kane when you need him? We've finally found a werewolf he can hunt. lol

Steve Quast

Little miss doesn't deserve a name lol

Steve Quast

Look on the positive side of this episode. We get a little more Spike. We get a little more of the commandos (creepers), we get to see Willow momentarily jealous of Buffy academically, we don't see Parker at all, Veruca was put down.

Steve Quast

What if Willow turned Oz into another rat? LOL

Domi E

Urgh, SO SAD Steve!! So sad!!

Domi E

Good point, Ron!! It really did come as a shock!

Domi E

A little too well if we’re being honest!

Domi E

Omg haha!! We have the same word in portuguese, very similar!

Richard Ashton

I once heard Portugese described as the 'Most Beautiful Language in the World'.

Ron Fehr

How about a werewolf-rat hybrid? Lol

Effie

I don't think it was just the lack of material...I read somewhere it wasn't just the fact that he had only a few lines but that he had to stay for hours just to do his part. I understand him leaving tbh.

GenU

Brings back to mind Domi's drunk rewatch with Alley, where she was gushing on what a great guy Oz was and Alley desperately trying to keep her mouth shut.

Domi E

Aw that’s so sweet! I’ve never heard that!!

Domi E

Yeah I can’t really blame him cause they didn’t give Oz too much emphasis every episode, so it’s totally normal for him to want to move on but damn that hurts!!

Domi E

YES!! Absolutely great point. That part was so URGHHHHHH.

Domi E

LOLOL, I agree with UTU49 I have to say. At this point he’s very integrated with the squad to the point where this is something he absolutely should not be hiding!!

Domi E

Agreed. Do it, Buffandra. Now.

Domi E

So glad you’re enjoying. Coff Coff sadist Coff Coff.

Domi E

URGH SO TRUE!! Come back fake Wes!!

Domi E

Yup good points. This episode did have awesome moments!

Domi E

I agree with this decision, I’ll go tell Willow to go do this spell!

Domi E

Oh no 😭😭😭Hahahaha

UTU49

More like masochist...

Veronika

Oh no :o I was dreading this episode because I didn't want to see your heart break because of Willow&Oz :( and when things were going so well for them...oh well... with Whedon you can not expect that happiness will last for anyone :( your predictions at the beginning were so on point! Incredible reaction as always <3

Stewart Denew

Been meaning to say it before, but I like how the vampire fights have gone from "ok this is a big thing" in the early episodes while she was still relatively new & still learning to a short & mostly plot-irrelevant opener, basically "yeah, this is her day (ok, night) job, it's routine now" in the later episodes which is a good way to show her development. Spike getting interrupted mid-gloat is classic & villainous monologues getting rather abruptly interrupted seems to be a bit of a running gag in this & Angel & it really doesn't ever get old. Feeling sorry for Giles, he's missing hanging out with the gang at least as much as Xander, especially with their reactions & treating him differently - they're not children any more so he's not the full time mentor any more, but still a couple of years away from enough experience as adults that he's just a friend who happens to be older than them. A veruca is another name used in the UK for a plantar wart, a nasty and painful growth on your foot - Roald Dahl pointed that out specifically for the character in Charlie & the Chocolate Factory & I doubt the name is a coincidence here either. Yep, communication is the important thing - like Willow said, Oz could have told Buffy & the rest of the gang straight away & while Willow would have still been upset, it's likely she'd have been able to get past it as a genuine "I literally didn't know what I was doing & now we can take steps to stop it happening again." I think the big reason (in-universe, since Seth Green was leaving to work on his film career) it went down as it did is that there's parallels between being a werewolf & with certain chronic conditions where people who develop them don't fully understand yet what's happening & are unwilling to accept that certain adjustments are going to be necessary from now on & trying to carry on as before, then running hard into the reality of their condition - Oz is still in the denial stage while Veruca has more experience & has adapted to it. Like Oz says at the end, he's had the diagnosis for a while but that proper eye opening experience means he actually realises now how he needs to get proper help.

Antonio

This is just your periodic reminder that we love what you do, Domi, and there are few people better at articulating their thoughts when it comes to the Buffyverse than you. Keep up the awesomeness!

Domi E

So upsetting :( but thank you Veronika (I’m so glad your name is not Veruka)

Domi E

Really good point and comparisons! Such a bummer to see Seth go, I really miss him :(

Domi E

🥺🥺🥺Anthony!!!! You’re the kindest and this means the world. I appreciate it so so much. Thank you!!

Veronika

I couldn't agree more! Love you, Domi ❤️❤️❤️

Veronika

It is...I lost it when you mentioned fresley because I never made the connection and it hurts so much more now :( so am I :DDD Veruca is a big nono

KT

Fun foreshadowing at the beginning: The Bronze is Willow's place-blanket -> immediately disrupted by Giles appearing Oz is her person-blanket -> the rest of this episode happens

KT

Agree about the werewolf costumes, although I honestly cannot picture a good werewolf costume. Even the best ones I've seen were, at most, fine. I actually give props to Twilight for going with just literal wolves. You'll notice none of the other demons on Buffy or Angel have hair, it's just too cheesy looking.

UTU49

I actually preferred the original werewolf design from Phases. They're both cheesy, I suppose, but I prefer the cheese of a whole wolf head, rather than prosthetics over a human face, with minimal wolf features. Good point about Twilight.

Jordan Haddow

It seems like they wanted to have facial expressions to me. Also, the suits appeared to be good quality material. It was probalby, well we just dumped a shit tonne of money on these things, guess we better use them. I agree, the wolf head suit seemed better. That's the problem with the times. The special effects were a crap show and honestly I think the better scenes were where they hid most of the monster and let the imagination and sound effects fill in the gaps. There was a movie, Taken, where for most of the movie they only showed some fingers or a leg for a split second. Other than that, it was rustling and jarring sound effects. Creepy. as hell.

Jordan Haddow

Especially as the timing of her watching this episode coincided with her breakup, so she basically attached all her negative feelings toward her ex onto Oz. If you think you are mad at Oz Domi, you have nothing on Alley.

Jordan Haddow

Such a hard episode with such big ramifications for the future of our favorite crew. Love the reaction, especially that mad prediction in the beginning about Veruca. Of course, sadly I might state, the predictions kind of went off the rails each time you predicted they would stay together. Still, I think that was denial kicking in more than valid predictions, so we'll ignore them. It seems like a rough ending, but in shows like this, drama is a great driver for change. The whole dynamic of the group will surely be affected. Add to the mix Spike, and we have an interesting future to look forward to. So at least we can console ourselves a little despite the horror that is watching tears spill down poor Willow's face. That is something that is NOT easy to watch. Also, my two cents on Oz. I think they were trying to setup a state of mind for this type of scenario for a while. They have eluded to the fact that the wolf wasn't just restricted to the three nights around the full moon before. When he was able to track Willow down by her scent in Lover's walk, even knowing she was afraid from blocks away, we got a hint that more was going on with Oz. I think he was ignoring the warning signs that the wolf side of him was encroaching on him personally because he was leading such an ideal life. He had his band, a great group of friends, and of course Willow. I think his passion to help them so much was partly driven by the fact that he felt the wolf more and more and it kind of scared him. Like, as long as he kept doing good things, he would stay good. I don't think his attraction to Veruca was what affected him the most. I think it was the power behind it that made him realize that his complacency had allowed the wolf to sneak in and steal more control over him that he wanted to believe. If his compulsion to seek out Veruca was so strong that Willow faded behind it, how much control did he really have to stop the wolf from killing? Especially when you combine those thoughts, how much resistance could he put up against it if it ever decided to kill Willow? I also think he didn't tell anyone as he was pretty sure that Veruca would die and he was trying to work out a way for her not to. As soon as he would have told Buffy about her, the decision would have moved to Buffy. With Veruca's attitude, he was fairly sure Buffy would have had to end up killing her. In any event, it was a your screwed any which way you go type of situation. Now all we can do is hope everyone supports Willow through this painful time. Plus think of all the ways Spike may reenter and mess things up.

x_Rhi_x

Urgh this is always a bugbear I have with buffy. There are very few things I dislike about the show at all, but the werewolf costumes...some of the costumes in the show are great for the time but the werewolf ones are so bad. Literally like stunt guys in furry suits with gorilla masks. It's a shame. The worst time is in Beauty and the Beasts where someone (faith?) Grabs oz's tail and its just so stupid and fake looking lol

R J Walker (FumblesMcStupid)

ONE of the reasons they killed Jenny and not Oz (as well as audience reaction to Oz) was, I think, that they wanted to explore his character and that they thought that he had potential. And then they really didn't. We never really got many Oz centric story lines and his character was basically 'I don't ask for help when I should and I'm terrified of being a werewolf'. At least that's how it feels to me, I don't spend a lot of time thinking about Oz. Point is, IMO they wasted his character and he just became Willow's taciturn boyfriend and not much else. Maybe that's just how I see him but for a character I genuinely love I was always frustrated at the lack of development.

R J Walker (FumblesMcStupid)

Oh man, your accurate, but heart breakingly accurate predictions 😭 I do think that the way Oz behaved is in character. His ONE flaw is that he doesn't ask for help and here it rears its ugly head. There were SO MANY opportunities to tell somebody. Even if he couldn't tell Willow...or Buffy, go talk to Giles. Jeez man!!!!! However, I don't think I'm as angry at him as many people seem to be. I think a lot of it is the werewolf attraction. Plus, I do think that all the guys are a bit unnaturally interested in her - otherwise why put that line of Giles' in. He's also been terrified of the wolf for a while now. I feel like this would NEVER have happened if she was just some girl. BUT the fact he continued to lie to Willow is BAD, like you said, gaslighting. I think going away to sort himself out MIGHT be for the best. He needs to get himself under control and work out who he is and I don't think he can do that in Sunnydale. Remember, he KILLED Veruca. I know she was a terrible person but still, that has to shake him. I think the only other time was in The Zeppo but I don't think he knows about that. This time he must know even if he can't remember. Other stuff - poor Giles at the Bronze, so awkward lol And Buffy is super bright, too few people give her credit for that! Also, I noticed Willow had a toasting fork in her magical supplies, which made me laugh, I have one of those :D Willow....OMG, 😭but then that spell 😲and Willow and Oz were SO CUTE at the beginning...we should have guess something horrendous was about to happen! That bit at the end with Buffy and Giles, and Buffy says how she doesn't know how Willow will deal and Giles takes his glasses off, and moves so Buffy can't see him as well, and his voice is rough and a bit choked and I JUST KNOW he's thinking about Jenny 😭
