Even though I am sick as hell, I hope this is still an enjoyable reaction :)

The edited version will take a while to be posted, but I'll try and have it done soon!

It also helps that Domi already knew that they were going to get together.

I love your reactions. I do think you can sometimes get too caught up in trying to see chemistry where there is none and it interferes with your otherwise very perceptive comprehension. Yeah, you make many off-the-wall predictions, but who wouldn’t? You generally get the movement of the show, though, when not blinded by your romantic nature. Everybody’s got to have a flaw. I guess it’s not a bad one to have. Your excitement can often be contagious.

When I first saw this episode, I was convinced that Room 314 was the Executive Toilet.

Awww 😟 poor Domi 😔 get well soon! ❤️❤️❤️ take all the time you need. We'll be here 😘

So many feels about this episode, unsurprisingly ;) I think you're quite right that the season has been setting up a 'Giles you need to get a life' feel lol and he really has been on the margins (as has Xander). But that's very common when you go off to university, life gets busy. The party scene breaks my heart a little. So much of what is said plays right into the way Giles is already feeling even though nothing on its own would have been THAT bad if he'd been feeling better about himself. I mean sure, it's not a wise move Riley, to ask if a guy is retired when HE'S NOT EVEN THAT OLD!!! lol and Buffy probably shouldn't have said that Walsh is 'the most intelligent person she knows' but if Giles was in a happier place he'd have taken it OK I think. However, he's not, so the beginning of this episode really reminds me of the beginning of The Zeppo, lots of kicking Giles when he's down :'( And then Ethan shows up and Giles gets excited he might get to do his own kicking ;) How I love Ethan and his 'Bugger I thought you'd gone' and 'Just kidding', what a GREAT character 😍 Now I've had arguments....er....discussions with people who think I am COMPLETELY wrong about this, but I've always wondered if there isn't a little bit of fall out from Helpless here. Buffy mentions how much her birthdays suck and I can't help but think she's possibly been thinking about the last one. PLUS, the one time I get a bit mad at her is in the otherwise adorable scene between Buffy and Willow. Willow tells her Giles is hurt and she should go to talk to him and Buffy says 'tomorrow' because she's hanging with Riley. This is either amazingly thoughtless IMO or some left over subconscious anger about the last birthday she had. Like I said a LOT of people don't agree with me here but the only way I can feel better about Buffy blowing Giles off was to think of it that way. I mean sure, see Riley but it doesn't have to be all freaking day. Go visit Giles for half an hour ffs. Sorry, that line really winds me up. Anyway, what I mean is that MAYBE this is a bit of fall out from the episode where lots of people say there's no fall out. OR I'm reading things in to it because I REALLY THINK THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE FALL OUT lol OK, this is getting long, better wrap it up :D

Veronika

I've just started to watch the reaction and oh my god...you've met our queen Drusilla? That's freaking awesome! 😍

zerofk

Ah always great to see Ethan! Poor Giles though; even before he was turned into a demon he was having a terrible day. And now Spike even wrecked his car. It's a nice car, despite what the writers wanted you to think.

CeNedra

Wow living somewhere when you go to a screening and Juliet Landau is there.. u so lucky 😍 I'm 10 miles from London but have never seen the queen 😏

Apparently they had to crash it because most of the time it didn't work and they had to get people to push it. RIP Grey Citroen. I loved the Gilesmobile 😭

A behind the scenes funny story that ASH told in an interview. In that short scene of demon Giles stomping all over the garden the little boy in the scene was scared of him in his make up. So he sat down next to him and talked to him and said, look I'm not really a demon and took off his fake hand. At which point the little boy TOTALLY freaked out and ran off screaming. Ooops 🤣

You're a soldier, Domi, giving us a reaction when you don't feel well. You would have made a good commando. This episode is great. Solid Giles-centric offering (though you feel bad for Giles at the beginning). His interactions with Spike in this episode are priceless. Plus it's great seeing Ethan again.

Steve Quast

You waited almost an hour and fifteen minutes before mentioning Jenny. Is that a new personal record?

Jane Espenson always have the most fun with the adults characters on Buffy like in Band Candy and Gingerbread. Buffy’s birthdays are always a big deal on the show, and usually brings an immense amount of misery for poor Buffy. Surprise/Innocence and Helpless. Buffy herself references it in this episode. But this time the focus is not on her, even though she is clearly affected by Giles disappearance we don’t get to experience it in this Giles centric episode. Speaking of Helpless, it was because the Watchers council acknowledged that Giles had become more of a father figure to Buffy that they fired him. I have a complete opposite opinion on Riley’s reaction to Buffy’s strength and capabilities. The fact that he feels the need to compete with her is not cute. “Give me a couple of weeks and I will take you” is definitely not cute, it’s a red flag. Just my opinion.

Raven Dark

ROTFL!!! Why does that feel exactly like something that would totally happen in the Buffyverse for real? I could totally see Giles or Xander doing that with some kid on the street at Halloween or something. Too funny.

Jordan Haddow

I agreeish with you about Riley. I don't know if I would go straight to red flag, more like a yellow flag. If the guy was actually stronger than Buffy, I would leave it stat. The fact that he is incredibly weaker than Buffy kind of takes out the abusive angle and just places it into his feeling inadequate. Riley, to me, is one of those guys who has been the best at everything his whole life. Plus, it could be they added his history into it. I can't remember exactly where he was raised, but I would think it would be a more conservative part of the country where gender roles are more strictly controlled in society. He kind of gives me the sense that his world view can't really handle a woman who is stronger than he is. He sure couldn't let it go this episode.

Jordan Haddow

It's definitely a fun little episode. Too bad you weren't feeling well. I hate nausea with a passion. There are a whole host of things that are interesting in this episode character wise. The one thing that I really focus on though, is Buffy's figuring out it's Giles just by looking into his eyes. I've found that the show has this sense of when someone is really close to another person. How they just seem to be able to see into that person and know what's going on. Also, I have always thought that Buffy herself is really a big believer of that. There has been a number of instances where characters will just know things about another without the need for discussion. Buffy's done it for Giles. Angels done to for Buffy, heck, even Spike was peered into Buffy's soul a time or two. Here, despite Giles being a demon and fighting Buffy, she is able to tell it's him with one really good look into his eyes. I mention it, because this season seems to be quite a bit about the distancing of close friends. This whole episode is focused on Giles feeling left out and useless. More than that though, everyone is kind of doing that to each other. Nobody can find Buffy for much of the episode. Willow purposely leaves Tara out of her discussions with Buffy. Xander is off in his dungeon of a basement. Despite that, Buffy was still able to see Giles. I don't know, I'm probably just rambling, but to me, it was always a big moment that kind of defined a big part of Buffy to me. Specifically on how she relates to others.

Raven Dark

Regarding Riley, I've been watching this reaction while trying to figure out how to say what I want to say to this without it coming across confusing or convoluted. I hope this makes sense. First, let me make it absolutely clear, I am not pro-riley, so this isn't coming from a fan who doesn't "get" it. I don't dislike Riley, or like him. I'm kind of funny when it comes to couples in shows. I sort of...just don't "ship." I just accept a couple as part of a show and don't really feel one way or the other, not just with Riley and Buffy, but with shows in general. So please, no one come at me for being a "Riley fangirl," because I'm not. My words are intended to be entirely neutral. When Riley said, "Give me a week to get ready, and I'll take you," I never saw that as having any particularly sinister meaning. I always saw it as implying that kind of healthy competition that happens between two people who are good at combat and who enjoy sparring with someone they see as an equal. I'm not saying that Riley doesn't have issues with toxic masculinity. I think he does, and sometimes what he says definitely comes off that way. But in this case, I don't think he meant that he feels the need to beat her because she's a female and therefore shouldn't be better than him. That said, now that you've pointed it out, I wonder if perhaps it is a sign of an issue he has, and I just missed it. Point being, I find it interesting how another person's view can make you see things you never noticed on your own. You could be right.

Meeting Juliet Landau had to be amazing. She probably wouldn't have been weirded out by asking about Druscilla on Buffy. She's a Buffy fan herself. She actually belongs to a Buffy fan page I follow. She pops in occasionally with some comment. Not even a "Let me tell you as an important person from the show" but just comments that you think are from any other fan until you see the name, and then check and realize that Yes it is a verified account.

Thank god for a queer person watching this show. I've seen too many straights watch this episodes and miss all the willow and tara subtext completely

Vicky N

Raven Dark, there’s nothing in my comment about gender dynamics or toxic masculinity. Riley takes orders from Maggie Walsh and clearly recognizes her authority. What I find troubling is his need to be able to overpower Buffy just as he realizes her superhero strength and her in charge persona.

Loves Bitca

I don't think they were giving Buffy a day off. Giles went to Walsh's office to try to find Buffy the stop the thing or fight the thing, but then got lost in the halls on his way out. Basically they were out of time and had to go ahead without Buffy. The days before everyone had a cell phone.

Ron Fehr

Well, you got a double dose of happy this episode. You got to see Ethan again, and later Tara. By the way, I think that Willow is unsure at this point about mentioning Tara. Maybe her friends still see her as Oz's girlfriend.

Markus E.

Ahh, you talked over one of the best puns int the buffyverse: Prof. Walsh: „We thought you were a myth“ Buffy: „Well… you were mythtaken“

Bri

As always, Domi, I love your delight at this show!

Bri

Vicky, just because Riley takes orders from Maggie, doesn't mean that Riley's comment here isn't rooted in toxic masculinity. His need to overpower Buffy here is troubling, as you say, but also it's clearly rooted in some notions of masculinity that are regressive and harmful. Riley follows Walsh's orders because she's his chain of command. The military structure is robust enough for the usual gender dynamic doesn't play out in this case (although as we know from hearing about women's experience in the military, this is actually unusual!) That doesn't mean that outside of that system he wouldn't find a powerful woman threatening. My five cents, anyway! ✌️

Veronika

Not to remind you of the painful episode that is Angel 1x08, but the white sweater that Buffy is wearing in this episode is the one she had on in IWRY. I'm almost never paying attention to the wardrobe but the sweater is so recognizable to me...I don't know if it was a coincidence or intentional but maybe they were trying to draw attention to the parallels between Buffy&Angel and Buffy&Riley...but hard to say :D Anyway, your pure joy over Willow&Tara is so adorable! <333

Loves Bitca

Oh, that was why she didn't end up asking, despite the temptation, but she also said she that Juliet would probably give her a weird look or something. I don't think that would have stopped her ultimately save for the spoiling herself, but just pointing out that she wouldn't have thought she was weird or too fan girly.

Ron Fehr

Having seen the complete series of Buffy, I always anticipate your predictions for each episode. Please don't take offense, but I feel that some of the ones that you get wrong may be based more on your feelings at the moment, and that some of them might just be wishful thinking (although you may have stated that several times). I know that some of your predictions are incorrect, and sometimes it's tempting to to make spoilery comments, but I know that would just ruin the experience for you. My advice is that you stay aware, and that you try not to read into things. Some scenes are just scenes, and may not be as meaningful as one may assume.

Here's your monthly reminder: I'm really enjoying your videos because you notice and care about lots of character details. About Buffy/Riley, etc.
