Thanks, Loves Bitca, you definitely made it clearer. People can get rather touchy and it is interesting to see what goes on behind the scenes, even when such knowledge does not really affect the story as we have it.

Todd Bolton

It is interesting that these days it is known as "gay subtext", when, since the beginning of movies, a century ago, there has always been such between characters of the same sex and it was just known as "sexual chemistry". In some ways, I think our advanced sexual mores have set us back.

Todd Bolton

Domi says, "Faith's gonna come for Riley." Lol, after events in the next episode.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

Really been waiting a while for this one so I'm very excited! I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess "Ohmygod are we finally getting Faith this episode?! Faith, ma'am, are you ok? Oh no, she does not seem...Ohmygod...holyfuckshitfuckshitshitshitshitshit...." Am I close, let's find out 😆😏 Also I'm turning my headphones down just in case.

Domi E

Haha! You nailed it so hard I don't even think you need to watch the reaction after this ;)

Veronika

Domi, you are literally killing me! I've been waiting for this episode since you started asking for Faith to come back and you bring the cutest puppy to your reaction?! I just started the video and I am already overwhelmed with joy!

ADDButterfly

I love the relationship that Faith and the Mayor had, it was so sweet and wholesome. Which feels weird since they were the bad guys.

Steve Quast

I love your new puppy. Clearly he was excited because he knew Faith would be in this episode. PS Fun fact, the name August means to be of dignified or majestic quality. Hence the name Augustus Caesar, whom the month of August is named after.

Steve Quast

All of the two-parters in the series have been really good. The two episodes which introduced the series were solid, What's My Line is pretty good, Surprise and Innocence are amazing, Becoming Parts 1 and 2 are amazing, Graduation Parts 1 and 2 are great. And even though they're not a traditional two-parter, you could argue that Dopplegangland is a second part to The Wish. Here we go!

Hosman

Sara Michelle Gellar can really pull off the crazy eyes lol.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

Ok I'll have a go and try to explain what I think we're supposed to infer about the Slayer lore in regards to the transfer of powers and upbringing You're correct remembering about Kendra saying she had been trained from a young age. To my mind that implies some system related to the Watchers brings in young women suspected to be future Slayers and prepare them for that life. But just based on the limitations and secrecy of the council they're probably not going to be able to make contact with all of the future Slayers and probably not even most of them. So when the current Slayer, uh, gets her ticket punched the Slayer powers are just as likely, if not more so, to land on someone not in the know such as Faith or Buffy, Faith who we've been led to believe has a very troubled past or Buffy who was just trying to be a normal girl. At that point a Watcher is sent in to try and train and prepare the new Slayer as best they can. I suspect we're also supposed to infer, and I'll try to be as politically correct with this as I can, that Kendra was from a part of the world that was a bit more in tune with the spiritual part of things and demons and such are more common knowledge. Yeah I know there's a whole bunch of ways that statement could go nowadays. It's a tv show from the 90s, what more can I say. From the Council's perspective it's better for the powers to be bestowed on someone within their influence but it isn't something they can control. It's the Buffyverse, it's an imperfect system lol I dunno, that's kinda what I've gotten out of it after many rewatches, I'm sure some folks have other opinions. Hopefully the rambling makes some sense and helps a little. Cheers, can't wait for the one!

Dan

Regarding how slayers are called - this is partly based on the film which isn't entirely canon but is consistent with the series in this respect... The Watchers' Council have ways of identifying potential slayers. Generally they identify each one and train them before they are "called" (if they are ever called - most are not). When they're "called" they just become the slayer with the strength/speed/powers. However, the Council missed Buffy until she became the slayer, so she didn't get the pre-slayer training. This is why in the early seasons Giles has to try to teach her combat skills when she already has the slayer strength/speed.

Ron Fehr

I like how you figured out the ending just before it was revealed. And the look on your face when you realized that you were right. And another comment. This must have been a joy for you to watch. Seeing the return of Faith, and a couple of cameos by the mayor.

Darrell Palmer

Your reaction to the next episode is my all time favorite and I haven't even seen it yet!!!!

Bri

Glad you loved this so much!

Dan

I think the implication in the film is that the Council do identify most or almost all of the potential slayers - IIRC there was a specific reason they missed Buffy. (It's made clar that Faith had a difficult childhood/upbringing, but I don't think there's anything specific that says she was missed by the Council like Buffy was.)

zerofk

Oooh we get Faith, _and_ a puppy! Hi August! Joyce is so sassy in this episode. "How do I look?" "Psychotic." Love it! I love how excited you are about the switch :-D Faith crawling out of the grave in her dream is an homage to an iconic scene in Shawshank Redemption.

Loves Bitca

For the Fuffy fans, there's a good point that Faith was more upset about being dumped (her words) and forgotten and left behind, than she was about being stabbed.

Loves Bitca

I always got the impression that Faith was identified as early as most possible Slayers, but was before she became The Slayer. In the movie they stated why Buffy was not found until she became the Slayer, but it doesn't translate to the tv show. I don't think they've ever specifically gave a reason Buffy wasn't found until she became.

Loves Bitca

You were upset/surprised that Faith beat the girl and took her clothes. I think most of us were worried she had killed her and the statement that she was beaten was a good thing (as opposed to killed).

Loves Bitca

The council doesn't choose who becomes a Slayer or even who is a potential Slayer. The magic that does it is really just random. Somehow they can find out who could potentially be Slayers, and start training them. Then when a Slayer dies, it just goes to one of them, that they don't know who it will be. Somehow Buffy was one that they didn't find until after she turned. And when a potential slayer becomes a Slayer, they don't get a phone call but likely just feel the power.

UTU49

Abs. That sounds good to me. I like the way you talk about possibilities and inferences, rather than doing what most of the internet does: talk like a know it all, constantly making unsubstantiated claims in an attempt to prove themselves smarter than everyone else. ALSO... I always want people to remember to acknowledge that the series gives us contradictory information, so no one can claim to know exactly how things work... because clearly the series itself doesn't seem to know EXACTLY how things work. I wish I could go into specifics here, but I doubt that's possible without starting a spoiler avalanche. :)

UTU49

Hey, Domi, here’s something I wrote for your last video, but didn’t post… cuz I’m very careful with spoilers. “Hey Domi, if you keep trying to manifest Faith, it will work eventually.” Hooray, it finally worked! Good job, Domi! :P

Molly Willis

This is actually an episode I think new viewers/reactors have a better experience with than people who watched it live when it first aired - no promo, just the "HOLY SHIT" reaction to seeing Faith in the first scene, her waking up, the body switch...

Jordan Haddow

I totally agree, Dopplegangland was a total delayed second parter. They even follow the 2 parter tradition of being epic and bringers of major changes to the show. Anya being the biggest and best change. Also, not to be forgotten, the first real foreshadowing of Willow being gay. Plus, Vampire Willow is really one of the best characters who only got a short run.

Jordan Haddow

Are you talking about the movie that exists, or the script of the movie Joss wanted to make and from which this show is derived? The movie that exists had many changes that Joss didn't agree with and the show didn't follow. I personally always chalked up Kendras advanced knowledge and placement as her family being close to the watchers council. Knowing about vampires and demons is one thing, knowing about the Watcher's Council another, still another to actually know the council and their ways enough to have the faith to hand over your young daughter to them. As Kendra was the only example of a potential Slayer trained before getting her powers, I always assumed she was the exception, not the rule. In Faith's case, it's almost disturbing if they had been keeping watch on her. In that case, they would have witnessed all the neglect and abuse it's implied she lived through and did nothing, all the while training Kendra at the same time. My thoughts at least. I should add, I didn't read the script for the real movie. I tried to, but just haven't been getting back to it.

Jordan Haddow

ya, those promos were so spoilery. I can't believe how crappy it would be to have the best parts spoiled cause some marketing exec thought those were a tease to attract more viewers.

Jordan Haddow

Domi in the Intro: "I don't know if this is going to be that big of an episode" Buffy fans: Evil maniacal laughter as we wait for Domi's head to explode on first sight of Faith.

Devon Martin

mhmmm lmao....i love it because we can yell at the screen at domi and not give any spoilers and HOPE she posts the second part of this episode ASAP <3

Devon Martin

is it sad that i still remember (especially season 7) promos when it first aired...i was just thinking about the fact that in 2003 i was in 8th grade and OBSESSED with this show and i definitely still am....i love watching new generations experience this show

Jordan Haddow

Don't worry about spiraling into the slayer lore because you remembered how different Kendra's calling was from Buffy and Faith's. The spiral thing is a major part of the show what makes it really fun. Usually they happen on rewatches, which kind of explains how so many of us can enjoy watching this show despite seeing it so many times already. I've spiraled into new thoughts and takes on different lore in the show sometimes after many times watching an episode. For instance, only recently did I get past the fact that Faith was having dreams that caused her to wake up to the notion of asking, just how long has she been dreaming? The doctors claim her brain scans all came up as her being brain dead. Yet, she was dreaming and tied to the machines. Has she been dreaming all this time? What, something like 9 months of never ending dreams of Buffy hunting and killing her over and over? Would kind of explain why she's not so happy to see Buffy still. Buffy even said she hoped Faith had used the time to go over things and have a change of heart. Not quite so easy to do if she's dreaming of being killed over and over again. There's nothing to back it up, but also nothing to disqualify it either. That would drive anyone crazy, but then again, she went into the coma crazy, so it would be hard to tell.

Ron Fehr

You definitely made the right decision to watch both parts on the same day. The original viewers didn't have that luxury. I never watched the show when it first aired, so I was a bit like you, once I got the dvds. I had the luxury of seeing numerous episodes instead of having to wait.

KT

I know all the twists and they still give me chills. I love the way they woke Faith up, all the little pieces of the dreams are so meaningful. Dream Buffy keeps talking about how she has somewhere to be and has things to do, and Faith tells her to go and (it's implied) to leave her behind. I think the fact that it comes up in a Faith-only (we presume) dream verifies that the Graduation Day Pt 2 dream was a shared one and not just Buffy's dream, since this exact kind of exchange between them happens there too. The gay subtext is at this point intentional. The writers are aware of what they created now and are leaning into it quite a bit. It's not like Willow and Tara subtext, but I still enjoy it a lot.

Ron Fehr

This question may not be geared so much to you, Domi, as to the patrons who have not yet seen the next episode, since you would have already seen it by the time this was posted. My question is how do you think SMG, as Domi calls her, and Eliza Dushku will handle playing the role of the other person? Sarah acting like Faith, and Eliza as Buffy.

Ron Fehr

I assume by now patrons would have seen the entire episode, and that I'm not spoiling this for anyone.

Ron Fehr

Totally unrelated to the episode, but I just wanted to let the person know (I think it was Jordan Haddow) that the problem was just a missed payment, and that I am able to watch via Patreon instead of using Google Chrome. Of course now I have two options for deciding how I want to watch.

x_Rhi_x

She's posting it on Friday, she said on twitter :)

x_Rhi_x

Puuupppyyyyy!!

Domi E

Domi E

Oh awesome reference!

Domi E

Hahaha, WOOPS 😂I guess that is good for Faith standards!

Domi E

Hahaha love it!!! ✨✨✨ Gotta manifest Darla and Dru now ✨✨✨✨

Steve Quast

Sometimes I wonder, when Domi goes shiiiiiit-shit-shit-shit-shit, etc., if she's speaking in some kind of Morse Code.

That’s Not Acting

Hi I don’t know if anyone else has told you about this yet but you keep mentioning it so I thought I would leave something here. So there’s not really any sub text in the Faith and Buffy relationship from Buffy side but there’s actually canon sub text on the Faith end. It’s been confirmed by the writers by Joss and by Eliza Dushku herself that Faith was bi. And that she had an attraction, may be a crush, maybe real feelings, for Buffy which is actually pretty obvious if you go back and look at some of the conversations they had. For instance the conversation they had in beauty and the beast where Faith was trying to convince Buffy that all men are “just in it for the chase” and this and that. She was often sort of down talking men around Buffy and that always felt to me like her way of trying to feel Buffy out or drop hits. Anyway, regardless of all that, it is actually canon. Faith was a bi character. But, while it’s still a problem these days, especially back then being by or representing bisexual people in media was severely frowned upon. Biphobia was even more prominent in our media than it is today.

Loves Bitca

To be accurate, Joss did not originally intend it, and actually thought fans were finding something that was not there, until he said he rewatched the episodes, and saw it himself. Eliza brought it in her view of the character, and then some of the writers went with it.

That’s Not Acting

Hmm… what did I say that contradicts you or those facts?

Ron Fehr

While there are definitely hints that Faith may have been bi, I don't think that was the case for Buffy. She saw Faith as a friend (frenemy) who needed help.

Loves Bitca

I didn't say anything was contradictory, just added some more facts.
