MAY 16TH 2022 UPDATE:

Hi all!!! Releasing this video for everybody to watch because I've fallen behind on editing and don't know when this, and the rest of s5, is going to reach youtube. This is my way of asking for forgiveness for what is probably going to be a bit of a more chaotic youtube schedule as I adapt to my new job. I'll stick to 1 Buffyverse reaction a week on Patreon, and I'll go posting on youtube at the rate that I'm editing, which I'm just not sure what it will be as of right now. Hope you all enjoy the Season 5 partyyyyy!!! :)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SEASON 5 IS FINALLY HERE!!!!!! and i’m clearly not excited :)

Hooray. Oh man I can't wait to watch you start season 5. Let the epicness begin.

Loves Bitca

Love this season. Though I'm actually not a fan of this episode other than the end shot. I just don't like bringing the Dracula myths to the Buffy Mythology, as Buffy set different rules counter to other mythos.

Just got to the part on having mods regarding spoilers. Just as a tip, Alley's Patreon kind of blew up in season 4 with regards to spoilers. People very easily get offended and angry when called out for spoiling, especially on Patreon where mods don't have the ability to delete comments. It kind of became a big thing over there with countless replies where things were getting out of hand. Maybe have a chat with Alley to hear it first hand from her. A solution she has now started using, which has worked so much better, is to have the mobs create a list of safe comments she can read. So, they no longer publicly flag comments as spoilery, they just don't include them on Alley's safe list and she skips past them when going through them. This way, people don't know they've been flagged. This has also eased tensions because other fans aren't feeling the need to publicly call out spoiler comments, which reduces the angry reply chains. Again, probably best to chat with Alley about it so you can hear it first hand.

UTU49

Yay! I love this episode. It's weird, and loony, and it seems to shift Buffy's perspective.

Marty Beck

Domi, pointing at Drac: that's the Cheese Man? 🤔😀 Also, Drac said Buffy's power is rooted in darkness, not necessarily evil. I believe there is a difference. Great reaction. Add me to those that think S5 is tops. Sooooo looking forward to this!

This is all kind of dry lore stuff regarding some things in Restless and the first slayer. Also, it's all mostly my view on it, so it isn't canon and can be quite wrong. Still, it's kind of how I've come to see these things over my time watching the show so far. I'm just writing this mostly due to some comments Domi made after the episode regarding the first slayer. Things to know about the first slayer and Restless. It was so interesting to be introduced to the first slayer. That episode is super tough to understand because it's layered with so many different meanings and it just keeps piling on things. All of which are distorted through the lens of dreams. With respects to the first Slayer though, it does answer some very interesting questions that the slayer lineage creates. The first big thing it answered, is the chicken and egg dilemma of the slayer and the watcher. Which came first? The first slayer was said to not have a watcher. So, part of her rough demeanor was that she was given the mantle of being the slayer with all its inherent abilities, but she had nobody to teach her how to use them. Knowing this also really makes any episode we've seen the Watcher's Council members in also especially annoying, because they act like the authority over he slayer, but they aren't. This implies that at some point, normal humans caught on to the existence of the slayer and learned about them. Over time they built up knowledge and at some point started helping new slayers learn about themselves. Then, probably not too long after that, it all went to their heads and they made themselves the guide over and controller of the slayers. Another thing that the episode brought out was how the first slayer existed so long ago that she didn't even speak. She in a sense, was just a hunter of demons and really had no other purpose in life. Angel, or maybe it was Giles, said about how the existence of vampires started. How demons were driven from the world, but before leaving, one drank from a human and fed them its blood, thus came into existence the first vampire. Also, they mentioned that for as long as there's been vampires, there's been a slayer. So, the first slayer came into existence just as the demons were driven out. Just one more thing about Restless. While the first slayer was attacking Buffy and the team in their dreams, she was just a representation of the source of the slayer's power, which is what was actually attacking them.

Darrell Palmer

That's one of the reasons that I love this episode. It is a self aware look at the Dracula myths and how they relate to the real (Buffy) world.

GaveUp

Need to listen to those mod names again ... you might hear some ones you know from alley’s side. We have it under control. If things go like alley’s we’ll come up with a solution.

UTU49

Hey, Domi. Don't feel that you have to love Season 5 as much as the people who state it as their favorite. Nobody knows how you will feel about Season 5 after you've seen it. Maybe you'll like it more than Seasons 2, 3, or 4... or maybe you won't... but either way, I'm sure you'll find TONS to enjoy, just like you did with Seasons 2, 3, and 4.

Ron Fehr

I understand the need for mods, and although I try not to be spoilery, I wouldn't be surprised if any of my comments were omitted from Alley's list (Yes, I watch her reactions on Patreon too). And I hope that I can be as careful here. As for me, I take no offense if I am asked to delete or amend a comment. That said, I believe that Dracula told Buffy that she would have to be near death, as well as craving the blood, in order for her to be turned. It makes me wonder, if she would have drunk from Angel season 3 episode 22, would she have become a vampire then?

Ron Fehr

Well said UTU49. I personally try not to pick favorites. Too much hype over one season over another could cause someone to have his or her expectations too high.

Ron Fehr

I like how you made reference to Tara's comment at the end of Restless. The exact same words that Dracula said.

Steve Quast

While this is not a stellar season opener, it's fun and quirky and genuinely enjoyable. Very interesting to actually incorporate the Dark Prince himself into the lore of the Buffyverse. It's neat, but it's also done in good fun and doesn't take itself to seriously. I approve. I love the older characters, Anya and Spike, having their own experiences with Dracula and learninig a little bit of how he fits into their world through their amusing anecdotes. At the same time, Dracula in this episode, along with the previous episode Restless, give Buffy cause to want to dig deeper into where her power comes from and what it means to really be a slayer. And this leads to Buffy wanting Giles to become her watcher once again, which gives him a reason to stay. All really good stuff. This episode also raises a number of questions which, for obvious reasons, we can't answer now. But I look forward to watching along with you so you can see what happens throughout the season.

Jordan Haddow

I believe the near death part of the scenario is the only vital element to turning into a vampire. The craving it part was I think Dracula's preference. Earlier, when Willow was listing the Dracula factoids, she mentioned how he liked to form a connection with a person and make them obsessed with him. Also, I can't say where, but I'm pretty sure the near death requirement of the turning of a human into a vampire was mentioned previously on the show. Maybe season 3.

Bud Haven

Still confused? 🤣🤣

FernWithy

I'm with you there. The seven seasons of Buffy are really kind of a single story; no reason to pick favorite points on the line.

Bud Haven

I think she would have, she was definitely near death.

Raven Dark

I love this reaction. LOL The episode is just such a silly, wacky, self-aware bundle of fun that also had some good serious bits with Giles. And that ending. LOL Also, glad you've come to appreciate Joyce. And also, your reaction to the ending. Haha. Oh, and nice going noticing the cowboy thing that Spike said.

Bud Haven

Another reactor, maybe it was Sofie said Dracula could have been a warlock before he was changed, explaining the showy gypsy stuff. When Dracula had Buffy drink from him he thought it would deepen his control over her. But tapping into that darkness empowered her to break the thrall. Let's say it was Buffy rejecting that darkness.

Ron Fehr

One small joke that probably passed you by was Xander's comment "Like that's enough to stop the Dark Master... bator." Need I say more. (I hope some people got the joke)

Ron Fehr

Totally off-topic. Your hair seemed lighter. It looks nice.

Ray D

Season 5 is my personal favorite as well. I think it tells the most complete start to finish story that the series ever does.

Darrell Palmer

Every season has a different vibe and a new story to tell. Domi has seen that. That being said, I think Domi has received enough hype about this season that all we now have to do is sit back, enjoy her reactions and gaslight the hell out of her 😎🥳 (but no spoilers).

Nicologik Reacts

Haha your little party in the beginning is so cute :) And thank god you have mods. Because this season really has to be watched spoiler free. :)

Antonio

....bator.

Antonio

It's OK, I've not seen a single reactor get this so far, so she's in good company.

Brendan O'Connor

Xander’s 1-on-1 encounter with Dracula made him a thrall/familiar to Dracula. In the Bram Stoker story there’s a character named Renfield, who was sent to an asylum and fed off of bugs and other small animals because Dracula promised him immortality. Spike mentions to Riley that Dracula likes having “bug eaters” around when he comes to a new place, and Xander fulfilled that role in this episode.

Ron Fehr

Absolutely. I have things that I would like to tell you, Domi, but I respect you and your choice. I'll try to keep quiet when it comes to spoilers, but I won't object if your mods find something that I shouldn't have said.

Veronika

Let's get this party started! <3 I'm so happy you're back! I hope you enjoyed your Holidays with your family :) I still can't believe that season 5 is here already...it feels just like yesterday when I saw your reaction to the pilot :D I loved all your points and thoughts this episode, let's see where this season takes you. btw. I love your new hair! It looks so good <333 also congratulations and good luck with your job hunt!

This is the first premiere of the show not written by Joss. We have the usual reintroduction to Buffy, a reaffirmation of her character, of who she is after a moment of self doubt. Only this time it’s not entirely resolved by the end of the episode, it seems to start a quest for deeper self analysis and discovery. About Giles and his desire to go back to England, that’s what part of his Restless dream was about. He dreamed of being a couple with Olivia who is pregnant and pushing a baby stroller. The next scene, while he is “distracted” by Spike, Olivia is crying over the fallen baby stroller. And Giles immediately moves on after asking himself what he is supposed to to with all this. Clearly the desire to move on from a life where he doesn’t feel needed to try and live his life is strong. But as soon as Buffy expresses her need, he changes his mind and is there for her. I like how this episode celebrates the cult status of the show while also paying homage (although irreverently as is the show trademark) to the ultimate classic vampire. Master……bator 😂😂😂😂😂

zerofk

I hate this episode. Every other "bad" episode has some redeeming qualities, but this one is IMO just, well, bad. The unkillable villain played off as a joke, everyone swooning over a character with no charisma, Spike's non-sequitur of "poncy bugger owes me 11 pounds", etc. I loathe it. Only the last two to three minutes are fine.

Ron Fehr

I'm glad that you had that information. I knew about Bram Stoker and Renfield, but I didn't remember any particular details.

Ron Fehr

I disagree with some of what you said. I like that Dracula repeated what Tara had said in the last episode of season four. It was an important statement that need to be reiterated, and it gave Buffy the incentive to want to learn more about her powers. As for the rest, I feel that it was just meant to be a mostly humerous episode, and should be watched for that purpose, to be amused.

Mysthe

This episode is a huge parody of the book Dracula, I don't want to spoil it to you in case you want to read it or watch Coppola adaptation, but eating bugs, the sisters, the fog, Dracula sex-appeal... It's ll blinks to the Stoker story and I love this episode for it. I always thought that it was probably an episode hard to enjoy completely if you didn't know Dracula story. Welcome back to Buffy and enjoy the season (my personal favourite is the 6, but the 5 comes just after). And US cheese are major villains for me ^^;

R J Walker (FumblesMcStupid)

Hmmm....well my main problem with this is that I find Dracula in NO WAY sexy so everybody swooning over him and Buffy being in his thrall just seems weird. That being said I really like all the Giles stuff (I know! Who would have thought?) and his feelings over Buffy wanting him to be her watcher again jhgfdsghjkhgfdghj But on a more serious note (and one that people have disagreed with me in the past on so this is just my opinion :D) I think that THIS is the moment when Buffy 100% forgives Giles for Helpless. I don't think she had been consciously holding on to it all and I think, if asked, she'd have said she was over it. But she could have asked him to be her watcher any time in season 4, she could have gone to him quicker over the Faith stabbed a guy incident, she could have kept him in the loop AND she could have apologised for leaving him out of it in New Man the day she found out rather than hanging with Riley, she could have not gone to work with Initiative the episode after Giles said he didn't think it was a good idea...what I'm saying is that I think there was a lingering lack of trust that she was clinging on to subconsciously. And the fact that the first scene in Giles' dream is very Helpless inspired makes me think that he's very much not over it as well. Anyway, just my opinion. I know lots of people say there are no consequences from Helpless but I argue that there are, they're just really, really subtle! I also really like that we get Willow and Xander together because that hardly ever happened last season and I like Anya knowing Dracula. She has the only acceptable reaction IMO, yes he's sexy, cool etc but no that doesn't mean anything now Xander calm down. It seems like a very Anya reaction. And I, too, thought of Jenny at that moment :'(

Bri

Lovely to have you back, Domi, wonderful vid. ❤️❤️

Khanach

I couldn't watch this one before watching the "Restless" rewatch, but finally I'm up to date :) And with enough conspiracy theories to fill a season of Lost... As Xander said to Willow: "You have too many thoughts" but boy was it entertaining...😂

Let me start with a couple of informations/considerations. 1 – Because you seem to really enjoy all the “kick ass” part of Buffy you could notice something different or off during this season. So I want to share with you an information that could help you understand what changed. Between season 4 and 5, not sure if happened before or shortly after the begin of season 5 shooting, it's unclear, the production lost two elements, Jeff Pruitt and Sophia Crawford and I can already hear your questions. Who? Who are these people you are rightly wondering. Well, let me introduce them to you. Jeff Pruitt has been the stunt coordinator and stunt choreographer of the show from its very beginning. Sophia Crawford was none other than Sarah Michelle Gellar's personal stunt double, again, from the very first episode of the series. Why? Why did they left the show at this point? Let's just say that “someone”, who we will not name, fired them “allegedly” for really pity reasons. Now, if you'll notice something different or strange in the “kick ass” department you know why. 2 – Don't read too much, or the wrong things, in who is or is not in the main title credits. The reason, most of the time, is just money. The production wants to spend as little as possible, big surprise, while the actors want to get as much as possible, again big surprise. If an actor that they think they really need is undecided or is considering different offers, one typical move from the production is offering to put him on the main credits. This usually, the details depend on the specific contract, means a full paycheck plus other benefits for each episode, regardless his screen time, for a certain number of episodes, again up to the specific contract. Sometime could even happen that is the actor who refuses to be put on the main credits, maybe because he wants to be free to work in different productions at the same time, something not uncommon in the business, while to be credit as a regular means that he has to guarantee his availability for as long as required. At the end of the day, even if we want to call the final result “art”, we can't forget that the production process to create such result is still just business. It's been amusing watching your reaction during this episode Domi. It's clear that you're quite out of practice. I can't remember to have seen you so lost for what is a quite straightforward episode, mostly focused on comedy. ☺️ Let me just having a little reaction to your reaction. “Dracula knows about the first slayer.” … What?!? 😮 “Buffy faked that she was under his control” … double What ?!? 🙃 A couple of nitpick. 1 – Buffy's bite mark is never where Angel actually bit her. 2 – If we stick to the classic story of Dracula, he's not particularly old for a Vampire, 500 and something. We don't know exactly her age but, for example, Darla served the Master for over 400 years. I like the fame angle they gave to Dracula, really funny. About the power of the slayers being rooted in darkness … well, yeah! I don't even touch all the good or evil aspect, philosophers have been trying for millennia to give an objective definition of these terms and they have not yet succeeded. But, about the “darkness”, and keep in mind that this is just my extrapolation of what it's been said in the last four season about a made up thing in a made up world, we know that all the supernatural powers, rituals, magic and creatures, like vampires, are remains left behind by demons when they left the world or they come from the rifts between the human world (I don't want to call it our world to avoid confusion) and the demon universe. Therefore, given these premises, if we define the demon universe as “dark” so the power of the slayers is rooted in darkness because it come from that universe (or hell if you like) or from something left behind from the days when demons ruled the world. We are clearly talking about some really ancient and strong power that survived for countless generations starting from the very beginning of mankind. It went from slayer to slayer all the way to Buffy. So It is not strange that Dracula claims that the darkness (or power level) of Buffy's power exceeds his own. As much Buffy may be compassionate, generous, loyal and kind, her slayer's side craves to hunt, kill and destroy, as we have seen in this episode. Of course all of this can be overturned at any time. As I said, we are not talking about physical laws here, but about something made up by a group of people around a table trying to get an idea for the next episode. Note of colour – In many of languages in which BTVS has been translated, the term slayer is replaced with huntress or killer. 😉

KT

Bravo for spotting the parallel between Dracula and The Master's thrall over Buffy. They both controlled her long enough to bite her and neither finished the job. It seems that Buffy dying is what broke the Master's thrall, and drinking Dracula's blood broke his. The meaning behind it is up for debate, but one theory is that something within Buffy *did* want to fulfill the Master/Dracula's desire. In Prophecy Girl, she had decided that she was going to kill and be killed by the Master, she was resigned to that fate, so wasn't able to resist until after she had fulfilled that destiny (been killed by the Master). And in this episode, she is curious about the things Dracula is saying about her power, and he is promising to share his knowledge. But once she drank his blood and the flashes didn't reveal any new information, she was no longer interested in gaining insight from Dracula, and so his thrall stopped working.

Henrik Holst

"Let's just say that “someone”, who we will not name, fired them “allegedly” for really pity reasons." - That is what Pruitt is claiming now once every one turned on Joss, but back in the day (have you read his childish white knight tale?) he claimed that SMG and Gershman conspired against Joss and that this was why he was fired and he wanted to keep working with Joss... I would say that his credibility is less than zero. His original white knight rant is here for any one interested: http://web.archive.org/web/20000619003429/http://www.mcs.net/~jcomroe/Knight.html

It's hard to explain "Slayer lore" to reactors when they ask about it, because a lot of it is spoilery (and some of it is in the comics). You ask about it the most I think (out of reactors I subscribe to), which is good--just don't expect a lot of answers on here.

Ron Fehr

I would have forgiven you anyway. That's just the way I was raised. But thanks for the nice surprise anyway.
