this is one my least fave season opener lmao so im curious to see why you liked it so much 😋😁 is it because of Justina 👀👀 lolzzz

Sesquipedaliant

Also one of my favorites. Such a great change of tone and setup. This whole season (plus most of 3) may be my favorite in all of tv.

Brendan O'Connor

Caritas is my favorite place in the Buffyverse, just weird and fun and safe to visit from time to time

Ron Fehr

A different look at Angel. Perhaps a little self-doubt creeping in after killing a good guy.

Jon Dub

I like this opening ep too. My least favourite Buffyverse season opener has always been "When she was Bad"

Ron Fehr

I don't know if you've ever listened to Mandy, but I think you'd agree that Barry Manilow sings it better than Angel. Lol

Steve Quast

In just the past few episodes, we've had Gunn introduced into the series, Darla revived and brought into the show in real time (not just flashbacks), and now in this episode Lorne is introduced and we even see a glimpse of the hotel you recognize from later seasons. I think it's safe to say Angel is starting to take the form of the show you remember from late season 2/season 3 onwards. Plus it was great seeing Faith again, who was also on the series for the first time a few episodes ago (Five by Five really isn't that long ago).

Steve Quast

Faith is interesting in that she has things in common with both Buffy and Angel. Like Buffy, she's both human and a slayer. But in terms of her overall character arc she has much more in common with Angel. They were both at one time villains who took pleasure in killing and now they're on the "rocky path" to redemption together.

Steve Quast

Fun fact: Caritas in Latin probably comes from the Greek word Charis/Charitos, which means grace, favor, gift, kindness, etc. It's linguistically related to Charisma, meaning gift or favor.

zerofk

So the Buffy writers get sued, while the Angel writers get thanks for showing Faith? Interesting.... :-P

Dave Ford

So, this isn't supposed to be a spoiler for the next episode - but the phrase "Are you now, or have you ever been.." is a reference to the communist witch-hunts the US congress pursued in the 1950s, led by Joseph McCarthy.

You were upset about Cordy getting called away during her acting class, but it shows how much Cordy's grown. She saddled up immediately with no complaints. First episode she said that she would be there working for Angel unless she had a gig. Now, fighting the good fight is her First priority.

Ron Fehr

Although, for most of the season, Lorne is simply referred to as the Host. It's not until the letter episodes that we find out his name. By the way, I hope this isn't a spoiler for anyone reading this.

Ron Fehr

I already mentioned this to Alley via YouTube, but if you want to see a lot of jousting, check out A Knight's Tale with Heather Ledger.

Steve Quast

Yeah it's true, the host's name is technically considered a spoiler until later in the season for most people. But Domi knows who he is and even said his name a few times during her reaction.

Ron Fehr

So those who are first-time watchers are just privy to a small piece of information. And if you think about it Domi gave away a spoiler, although she does warn people that she has some future knowledge of the show.

Ron Fehr

When you mentioned about Faith in prison and Dracula talking about darkness, it made me wonder why Dracula didn't mention Faith to Buffy. Did he not know that there was a second Slayer?

Ron Fehr

It's not a bad season opener, but I can understand when compared to the others. I try to make a point of not choosing favorites.

Mixed feelings about this episode. Hate the main plot trope of Angel saving a damsel in distress. By the way the writers don’t ever bother to give her a name. By the end, the motive of the antagonist is still unclear. On the other end I like the main theme of the rocky path to redemption.it’s a little heavy handed. Yes Angel kills a good guy, but he was not the aggressor. The demon who was protecting the pregnant woman was the aggressor in the exchange. This fact and the vision from the TPTB played a lot in his reaction. I liked that we get to see that Angel is keeping tabs on Faith. One of the reason it’s easier to see a path for redemption for Faith in Angel’s world than in Buffy’s is because the damage she caused to Buffy is deeper, more personal. I like the introduction of bot the host and Caritas. Angel singing was priceless.

Domi: I think I misread the interaction between Angel and Kate. 😂

I’m so glad you enjoyed this episode because I’ve always loved this premiere because of all the reasons you mentioned, and I did not understand the hate for it (same with Btvs 3x01 – Anne). I mean, we got Angel singing…that should be enough reason to love it :D but we also got introduced to the Host & Caritas, we got the meeting of Gunn with the rest of the gang, and we also got Darla and Faith. This episode had it all! I just love that at the beginning they were keeping tabs on their cases and at the end, they all realized that it doesn’t work like that. Seeing Angel wanting to become human so badly was really sad… just a little side note: I don’t know if it is true, but someone in the comments of Passion of the Nerds analysis of this episode pointed out that this is the first time after (I think) the end of season 2, that Angel can be seen wearing his Claddagh ring (the scene where he’s singing Mandy and when he’s playing with Cordy’s unicorns you can see the ring on his hand) and that it can be interpreted as his sign of hope that he will become human again and get his happy ending with Buffy… Also his choice of the song Mandy, if you search for the lyrics, it is very clearly about Buffy :D One last thing, the scene with the jousting…I’m so glad that David was willing to ride the horse and do the stunts himself because it looks so cool :D

I like to think that "The Powers" knew that Kamahl was destined to die. This allowed them to switch him out of the duel, and insert Angel. Therefore they were able to save two lives without taking one, instead of losing three.

Shaun Houghton

Dracula is not concerned with anybody not killing a lot of vampires.

Ron Fehr

Thanks Shawn.I didn't notice my misspelling until now.

Ron Fehr

Apparently for the jousting scene, the horses need to wear special shoes, to have good traction on pavement.

I find this ep a struggle to sit through. Glad others enjoy it though.

I also enjoy this episode quite a lot. Lorne, Faith, Phantom Dennis, Angel singing, the list goes on...
