Odd that you say nothing groundbreaking has happened this season when they’ve inserted a whole new character, both in the show and in the memories of the characters, and, even more incredibly, made her seem as if she *should* be here, that she is integral to the show. I can’t think of anything more groundbreaking! I don’t really see that Anya is more likely to be a rule-breaker than Willow. Anya has consistently tried to fit in with humanity (though she may be willing to express contrary opinions) but she is trying very hard to learn the new ways; after all, as we soon find out, she is still having trouble adjusting to Lutherans. Willow, on the other hand, is kind of beginning to explore her rebellious side. This episode is probably a turning point in her arc (though we have seen her, a few times, willing to misuse magic). I always think, though, that it seems a little forced here. I do not like Willow in this episode. I am very much on Anya’s side. I think they felt they had to accelerate her downfall. It is in my bottom-ten BtVS episodes – it’s Buffy, so it’s still good – but watching it with you has made me appreciate it more. Good reaction.

Hmm, the season 5 hype is not really the most helpful thing for reactors I feel. It sets their expectations sky high.

Ron Fehr

My favorite part of the episode was the interaction between Willow and Anya. Also finding out more of Anya's backstory.

Steve Quast

Same. Season 5 is great, but overhyping anything can have a negative effect on one's expectations.

Steve Quast

The one where Spike isn't given credit for not feeding off bleeding disaster victims.

Ron Fehr

He should get some credit.

Shaun Houghton

Given what Spike is, I think he deserves some credit, perhaps not a lot, but at least some.

That’s Not Acting

Willow and Anya’s interacting this episode were amazing. Also, wasn’t it hilarious how spike was non-consensually groping Buffy while she was trying to get up to save peoples lives? He’s so cute…..🙄

This episode is funny in a good way - for the most part anyway. And yay @ Anya backstory! I don't like how mean Willow is to Anya in this episode. They never got along well, but she really took it too far here. Anya's no saint either of course, but I really feel Willow was worse. That signed embroidery is very cool :-) And I love the drawing of Jenny in your background.

Can’t be helped really. Anyhow I think Domi gets it about right. “Triangle” is a fun, and needed, palette cleanser for the real feast to come. Tho for me eps 5-7 alone make this a great season of tv.

Between Willow's burglary and Olaf's insane troll logic, there was a pretty decent episode. I personally don't mind "monster of the week" episodes, the more time I get to spend in the Buffyverse, the better. It's not a race to the end of the season. I am on Team Anya this episode, Willow, sorry, but you gotta pay up lol. Props to Xander. Usually he laughs in the face of danger but then hides till it goes away. But not this time, he was extremely brave attempting to save Willow and Anya from the troll. It didn't work out very well for him, but at least he tried. Good for him.

The titular "triangle" is Willow, Xander, and Anya. So not really a love triangle per se (because, as Willow puts it, "hello, gay now!") but similar to one in structure. 😅

Ron Fehr

Can't say that I liked Willow in this episode either. I don't know if arrogant is the word I'm looking for, but it's close. She's thinking more highly of herself than she ought to.

Bri

I sympathise with Willow in this relationship with Anya. We don't talk about it much in the Buffyverse, but Anya was really really evil when she was a demon. Sooooo many murders. She became human and lost her powers not because she wanted to, not because she felt remorse, but because of external factors (the whim of D'Hoffryn). The first time Anya had any real contact with her (Dopplegangland) was when Anya lied to her and tricked her in an attempt to go back to her murdering life. We don't see her apologize or try to make amends to Willow for this. Combined with Anya's present deprioritisation of the feelings of others, Willow's attitude is not massively surprising or out of place. If one of my friends was seeing someone who's done really awful things and made no attempt to make amends, I don't think I'd be that keen either. Not to say Willow's perfect. But in comparison to Anya?

Ron Fehr

The interaction between Buffy and Tara after class was a welcome change from how Buffy reacted on finding out about Willow now being gay. Buffy was slightly freaked when she first found out about Willow's feelings for Tara, but she adjusted quickly. And now she's even comfortable enough to have a normal conversation with Tara. Her sexual orientation doesn't even matter to Buffy.

See I always feel bad for Anya the way she's dismissed by all the others, and feel that Willow is in the wrong here, especially in this episode. But you make some good points for me to reconsider.

Rey

It’s been over a year since Anya was evil. If you saw a friend date someone in the inside who has helped you save the world - another point of view

Domi E

Very true!! I love it so much :)

Domi E

Those are some great POVS! It’s so easy to forget how evil Anya was because of how likeable they’ve made her character!

Domi E

Thank you for letting me know! Makes a lot of sense haha

Domi E

Xander really did so good!! ❤️❤️

Domi E

Thanks Zero!! And poor Willow, she’s just having an off day!

Domi E

Wellllll, when you put it like that it really does sound problematic as hell LOL. Yikes!

Domi E

I think Shaun is right!!!

Domi E

That’s true!! To be honest, I’m loving Season 5, I’m just being harsh on it cause I’m SO PISSED about that Joyce scare haha. SO MEAN! I will not be getting over it!!

Bri

Rey, do you mean Anya helped them save the world? Does that refer to Graduation Day? I mean, sure she shares some useful info. Her willingness to help them sometimes is good, i'm not denying that. It's just, I'm not really sure it's enough. The fact that a year/18 months has passed in itself isn't really relevant, I don't think. If you knew someone who'd murdered a bunch of people, I'm not sure a year passing without a murder is a good enough reason to forgive and forget, especially if they don't seem that bothered by what they've done.

zerofk

Hmm yeah those are some good points, Briony. Anya has not shown remorse over what she did as a demon. In fact I think she made some comments that she missed it (although the only one I can think of off the top of my head is in Xander's Restless dream, which doesn't count). Then again in her actions she has not done anything bad since she's become human, except maybe that trying to get her power back.

Bri

Yup, definitely Zero, she is definitely on a better track now (although she can still be inconsiderate!). And I do love her. It's just, from Willow's perspective she meets Anya before she has anything to do with Xander (and it was an interaction where she tried to use and trick Willow, threatened Willow), she's only in their lives because she was willing to hurt/torture Xander or maybe even kill him (if Cordy had wished it), I think it's definitely understandable that Willow might be having trouble being very compassionate to Anya in that circumstance! That said, they're both kind of dickish to each other in this episode!

Loves Bitca

She did commiserate with Spike at the frat party about how much you don't appreciate the bloodshed until it's gone. While it's not entirely a serious "I want to kill people right now" it does show a lack of remorse.

Loves Bitca

It's important that Buffy's reaction was never "Eww gay" but "this is a major development/change that was just dropped on me".

Veronika

It's so wholesome seeing your beautiful embroidery finished and signed by the one and only queen bee! <3 You're very talented!

UTU49

Holy Guacamole Burgers, Batman! Somehow I got NINE days behind! I always enjoy nun humor.

UTU49

I'm enjoying your after-comments. I think the reason your feelings about Xander changed is because HE changed. Damn, I love how dynamic the B-verse characters are.

Marty

Yep!!! I mean, given what we know about vampires, him being able to resist human blood when he literally has given an open buffet, it’s huge!! Buffy is not impressed for some reason, I think she forgets he’s a vampire

Hannah Grangaard Gaudesen

I do feel like Riley and Xander had become friends. I mean at the beginning of Family they were play-wrestling and stuff. And just the fact that Riley confided in Xander about his feelings, makes me think that they must have had some level of friendship
