The Value of Life

Well, it took me a few days to get through it but I finally finished the whole reaction. You're right, the movies flow into one another so well because it's really one gigantic movie, broken into three parts because no one can sit through an 11 hour movie. Most amazing movie ever made! The books are the same. People always refer to LotR as a trilogy, but Tolkien wrote it as one giant book, all one story. The publisher though it was too big to publish in one volume, so they broke it up into three books. I first read the books when I was thirteen, and I've spent the rest of my life looking for another story that had as powerful an effect on me emotionally. Speaker for the Dead by Orson Scott Card (the sequel to Ender's Game) is the only one that's even in the ballpark, but it's a distant second place. Tolkien was a unique human being. And to think, although he spent his entire life creating the history and mythology of Middle Earth, The Lord of the Rings pretty much happened by accident. It wasn't at all where he was going with the work. The Silmarillion was what he was working on from his teens until he died, and he never finished it. The Hobbit was just a cute story he wrote for his kids that he had no intention of publishing. Just on a whim he decided to set it in Middle Earth, but very distant in time and place from the events of the Silmarillion. As the manuscript got passed around, someone with publishing connections saw it and thought it was good enough to publish. It sold moderately well, so the publisher asked for a sequel. Tolkien at first had no interest, because he wanted to focus on the Silmarillion, but eventually he started puttering around with some ideas, which gradually grew into this giant epic we now know as The Lord of the Rings. Amazing how things work out sometimes!
