Ramble: Beauty and the Beaster

Katie Kraynak

YAY I WAS BLINDLY HOPING IT WOULD BE THIS AS A LOWER TIER PATRON 🤭

Daveed Ben dov

Don’t apologise about the glasses, Jenny! People should be glad you’re making content of this quality and quantity for patrons, this isn’t a normal thing from what I know on patron. People are so picky nowadays. Also, they look great on you!

Danielle Sherman

I’m home sick today and this is truly the best thing that could have happened

Kosmik

BUTTER?

Sgt Sweetcheeks

I never at any point was able to predict what pop song they were about to cover all of these choices are truly insane

Katherine Allen

These glasses are iconic I’m a big fan

Austin F

you saying 'we are never ever getting back together' is a decade old did psychic damage to me

Katherine Allen

Wait I said this before she just apologized for the glasses and… girl who is mad at Jenny for wearing glasses wtf?? Let her live her life

Rebekah Fisher

I think my soul left my body when Butter started.

Missy

Call me maybe? NOBODY HAS A PHONE.

Deb Fine

I can’t tell you how much I needed “Jenny content” today. Also, the glasses are great!

Frankie

I'm kind of stunned that they did time warp. Does the church approve of rocky horror? Is RHPS on the table for future years? I have so many questions....

Tall Jeff

Seconded such a weird move

Jodi Hoffman

Fun fact- “Praise the Lord and here we go” is the original lyric in the mob song

L S

Church of the rock's beauty and the beaster time warp cover is the most magnificent thing to come out of Christ's resurrection during the twenty first century

Barfbag

I'm so happy we're getting more church play content. Yesterday I heard "Superman's Song" by Crash Test Dummies and it made me want to watch that whole video again.

Brian Tatosky

let people complaining about you wearing glasses walk into the sea please

Olive McCoy

it sounds to me like the pastor hates his congregation, or at least thinks they are very stupid?

Magical Girl Mel

I love this and now I'm just sat here thinking about when illegal homophobic hamilton happened last summer.

Sidekick

You know that Jake Sulley's opening number is Eiffel 65's "I'm Blue (Da Ba Dee)" Like, what is the point of all of this if it isn't that.

Tommy Pattison

Okay so for our next ramble we need “Jenny watches Rocky Horror” lmao

Devon

Oh my god, the idea of Mario getting crucified and the video game light and sound effects playing made me laugh SO hard. And it got me thinking... - *lights up, Mario and the gang have finally made it to Bowser's castle* - Mario says something about beating bowser, the music is swelling like this epic showdown is going to happen - Just when you think you're going to see the church fight scene of the century, Bowser hits Mario a single time and he dies, just like the game - The lighting cue hits, the death music plays, the epic score cut off, totally lined up as a comedy bit - Post crucifixion lament (maybe "Peaches" from the movie but they're just saying "jesus" over and over) - And then Mario has another life! Perhaps in a callback to the original Super Mario Bros, Bowser just falls in a trap door to avoid being struck by mario, he who lives by the sword etc etc The ends of these NEVER make sense, because there's no narrative reason for the person to just be alive again. Absolute nonsense, they just reappear — and like you said in your last video, it's because the Easter story isn't a great narrative to tack onto stuff. But since Mario gets more lives, since he's a video game character, you can just tweak a bible quote and say "he who believes in me shall not die but have eternal extra lives" or something equally cheesy

Jodi Hoffman

As a Christian- Jenny, your point about this guy’s sermons and the appeal of mega churches is excellent.

Austin F

also i'd support mario church play with anti-hero entirely to hear bowser sing "sometimes i feel like everybody is a sexy baby, and i'm a monster on the hill"

Freddy Ray

"Rick Grimes rises from the dead like Christ" is about right tbh. The Negan casting suggestion is spot on, that guy does have a low budget Jeffrey Dean Morgan vibe

Avery Larkin

I'm shocked that there was no nod to their internet popularity

Steven Clark

Come on, you've got to save that one for the big post-resurrection party song.

KikitheArtist

Omg he said smooth like velvet and I was like "lol it would be so funny if he started singing that one BTS song" AND THEN THEY DID???

August Filbert

I think your analysis of the theological deficiencies of the sermons was on point. It's normal for priests and pastors to mix "amusing" annecodes into their sermons, but usually as an entryway into something with a bit more moral weight. This sermon was long and all over the places and strangely not very focused on Easter itself, which certainly ties into how scatterbrained the play was.

Crispy Año

"This is one of the most incoherent crucifixions we've had"

Ted Koutz

The Time Warp isn't bad and hits a lot of notes: decades and decades old, better known by people over 40, from something that's a little risque for church and they have to change the lyrics, involves a dance they can barely do due to the costumes, B-

Aramis Calcutt

The word you thinking of is “ringers”! 😁

BROGGGGGY

Anyone bothered by the reflections in the glasses really dont need to be making that kind of direct eye contact while watching a video anyways 😵‍💫

Bear

why not just "so here's my pigeon, so mail me maybe"

Megan Smart

I was waiting for them to do "Be Our Guest" and then they didn't. I really wanted them to do it. How disappointing.

Richard Aldridge

They stole another Jim Carrey movie line for this one too (dumb and dumber this time). So that’s another oddly consistent thing.

Ham

oh buddy do NOT drag The Far Side into this

Bear

I'm just a sweet Mennonite, from Altona, Ontario.

Anna O.

So, as someone who has had to sit through a number of sermons, let me tell you, they're pretty much always rambly and kind of incoherent, unless you're Anglican or Catholic, where the homilies are expected to be short. Evangelical Christians tend to expect 30-40 minute sermons every week, and they are usually not great, unless you have a pastor who is good at writing sermons and good at public speaking (the church my parents attended when I was a teen had a pastor who was a fantastic speaker). It's a lot to ask to get someone to talk for half an hour on a couple of Bible verses--it's not really surprising that so many sermons end up strange places. I quit church a number of years ago, and when I've gone to Christmas Eve services with family when visiting them, I tend to stick around for the music, then suddenly need to spend the entire sermon in the bathroom.

Anna O.

Just as a choice to reference it's kind of hilarious given the church's stance on LGBTQ people.

Anna O.

Oh, and this guy is doing what's known as a three-point sermon (one that has three main topics/arguments), but obviously not very well.

progamer3x

If they did a Mario church play, Bowser (played by Gaston) should sing "Peaches," but it's changed to "Jesus."

M

Oh god you weren’t kidding about the sermon it was nonsense

Ham

Avatar: The Secret of the Blues

Captain Langosta AKA The Yellow Dart AKA Kyle

DBZ Easter play. Cheap, blond foam wigs and poorly-choreographed fights. Linkin Park's "In the End" as a post-crucifixion lament. Jesus/Goku offering the "Ki to the Kingdom" to those faithful to him. The audience raising their hands to power up Jesus/Goku's spirit bomb. That one's free, Church of the Rock.

bingo bango

"you almost have to look away" honestly I don't know how you're able not to

Trystan

The funniest part is at the end where the preacher seems wholly unable to interpret stories beyond their literal surface meaning. Also what Jenny points out about the preacher just rambling to obfuscate the fact they don't really have a point is called a gish gallop.

Steven Clark

Were Cogsworth and Lumiere supposed to be the two criminals who were crucified with Jesus? Is that what that scene was about?

Steven Clark

Jesus comes from a can. He was put there by a man, In a factory downtown. And if I had my little way, I'd eat Jesus every day.

Aramis Calcutt

Again Jenny serves me an unexpected pleasure when she skillfully takes apart charismatic mega church pastors.

run_away

I can't remember if they've ever done a nightmare before christmas one, but their gaston would be a perfect jack skellington. Also... the material would be kind of perfect for one of these. He could say 'the risen king' instead of 'pumpkin king'

S G Matthews

So, I was re-watching Jenny’s original Church Play video and I was confused about why they also included “who lives by the sword, dies by the sword” (as Belle does here), specifically I was wondering “do they think that’s from the Bible?” I looked into because I knew it predated Christianity (it was in Ancient Greek dramas as a familiar phrase) …and the answer seems to be “yes, they do.” It does appear in SOME translations of Matthew as something Jesus said… but it would be like me saying “penny saved, penny earned.”

Sarah Warren

Jake Sully should sing I'm Blue naturally

Drew Hitchcock

If I were in charge of these, I'd put in the part where the crowd is given the chance to spare Jesus and instead they're like "Send out Barabbas!" Barabbas would we played by a different local celebrity every year, not in costume, and would walk out and shrug their shoulders to huge laughs in the room and complete bafflement on the stream.

viruviruviru

Tried to answer "how you hunt a unique deer" as well, came up with: you can't! they're all DEERivative!

Austin F

i got my jesus out in georgia

Eric MacMillan

I cant wait for the Mario play sermon. "When I first played Mario, I thought Bowser was the hero. How could he not be the hero? He's big, he's strong, he has cool spikes all over his body..."

low level rat

The 'crucifixion' being belle getting just absolutely bodied by a big log is the funniest shit. Also while I'm hype about first girl jesus, I'm really baffled they didn't go with the beast when him turning back into a man goes along so obviously with the idea of resurrection. Wild choices all round.

flynnparadox

"I'm gonna gooo to sleep." Great video. Can't wait for bonus content!

izzi!

i wish they would do a full rocky horror easter musical it would be terrible and they’d have to change every part of it

Lydia Sims

Assuming most mega church goers can read and understand the book of Revelation, when its the major source of weird christian government conspiracy theories come from those passages, is a bit much.

Joseph Genser

I’m a little surprised they didn’t milk the Easter angle more by changing the scene where Belle thinks the beast is dead into the scene where Mary Magdalene first meets the resurrected Jesus. The scenes are extremely similar, and the sermon could have been something about how love transforms and maybe equate Belle’s love with Mary’s faith, etc. That seems like it would be more thematically related to Easter than “Thailand has crime and Egyptians believed snakes had human feet”

Mary and Steve

Instead of Taylor Swift, Belle should have sang ‘That Don’t Impress Me Much’ to Gaston

Mary and Steve

Post Crucifixion Lament Lady as Toad or Kamek would be ideal IMO

Zack Abrams

Omg what if LeFou is a Shakespearean actor and that's why he sounds british for a second

Emilia

As a BTS fan and a person with ears that Gaston performance almost made me cry

Alexa Johnson-Gomez

I am 99% sure that Lumiere is the mystery Chinese man from Tombstone, what do we think folks??

Suzy

I do have to say, even though it didn't really relate at all to the story, Free Bird as the post crucifixion lament went HARD, Mrs.Potts killed it, and Belle just walking out the door like "yep I'm back" at the climax of the song was perfect, I had the biggest smile on my face. Still confused about what she was doing touching everyone though lol

Christopher Reedman

Jennie must watch the rocky horror picture show. That has to be the next video

BROGGGGGY

"I wish" by skee-lo for jake sully for coming out in his avatar body. I feel like its one of the ones they wouldnt change many of the lyrics for "i wish a was a little bit taller, I wish I was a baller I wish I had a girl who looked good, I would call her, I wish I had a prolemuris in a hat with a bat, And a six foot banshee" its one of those songs that are not current but still get played on the radio every now and then

Jaz Mei Luo

I'm still watching but notes so far: 1) the Witch sounds like Pinnochio from Shrek and 2) maybe they love Call Me Maybe because they have to celebrate Canadian icon Carly Rae Jepsen

Sylvie

Why do they have to bring yerba mate into this? Or rather "YUR-bah MAH-tay." Is nothing sacred?

Shaun Cheah

Many moons ago, someone mentioned how the reflection of the light in Jenny's glasses triggered a sensory issue, and I suppose she's been very mindful of it since. Personally I find the glare to be pretty neat; the first few rambles where it happened I made a game of it to see when the light when line up with her pupils, it was like waiting for the DVD logo to bounce off the corner.

Alice

Cogsworth singing The Time Warp was amazing! Why not adapt all of Rocky Horror? Dr. Frankenfurter can be the Christ figure. He'd sing: "I'm just a sweet Messiah. From Messy Mesopotamia"

Gnome Choomsky

I was thinking the same thing about the Macintosh lol

Jackson

Wait glasses jenny is kinda a serve

Casey

Snakes all over the world “awwww man”

Ryujin713

I heard "Smooth like ... butter?" and my heart SANK

Gnome Choomsky

Did you know there's a Christian music jukebox musical on Netflix? It's called "A Week Away" 🤣

Gnome Choomsky

I saw Rocky Horror in a theater with, like, the whole parallel production people do... And it made me feel like if I had to watch the movie by itself, without all that other stuff, it would be completely unwatchable! 😅

Luis

I feel like a fool for not voting for this topic because the ramble turned out so well especially towards the end and the breakdown of the sermon. Watching Jenny doze off was the funniest thing ever! I was really hype for an Avatar play but now the thought of a crucified Mario is all I can think about lol. And I've said it before, but as a someone who wears glasses I love when Jenny wears them in her vids!

carlee elizabeth

finally someone admits that there's a reason 'human again' was cut from the movie

Jacob Crowe

"My heart still lies with Avatar" yeah, Jenny, we know.

Natalie Arnold

If you ever do watch Rocky Horror (which btw is so Not for Church that I'm surprised they expect anyone churchy enough to go to these plays to even watch it) the best setting is definitely a midnight rowdy screening party situation. It is not a movie to take seriously or analyse the details of. It is for laughing and yelling and dancing. Honestly surprised that the resurrection ISNT Beast coming back as a human? Like he's been "dead"/in hell this whole time? Its way more obvious than what they did.

5in100ents

Wait did Jenny go to St. Mary's?

Gnome Choomsky

OMG! I have a joke about how the Adam and Eve story is just a retelling of the tragedy of the transition of the human species out of the hunter-gatherer lifestyle, when we were cursed with the affliction of farming, and a lot of Christians will say that they were kicked out of the garden because of "sin," but up until about 500 years ago, there were milions of people living like Adam and Eve lived, and the number one reason they got kicked out of their garden was because some "Christians" came along and destroyed it!

David A Behlman

Using the word "grift" to summarize the pastor's job is based.

Drawn at Random

somehow the (possible) TikTok joke in this play was delivered much less awkwardly than the "tick-tock dance" joke from the live anniversary special Disney did a bit ago

Finnder

Hi Jenny. In the off chance you see this. I am a big fan and this subscription is worth every penny. Even if I did accidentally spend an extra dollar a month because I confused "Ready Player One" for "Star Wars Rogue One." I voted for this an I am super happy it won and you had a copy of the play to use. This video is going to be Legendary!

snughly

Lmaoo that gave me a good chuckle!!

Sarah Jesness

Megachurches love referencing pop culture. I think it's an attempt to engage teens and seem more relevant to them, but of course their references are usually pretty dated.

snughly

I really want to see them do a Walking Dead Easter play now. It would be characteristically out of touch for them, considering TWD's height of popularity was like a decade ago

Hobbes the Tiger

That's so good that they probably wouldn't do it

Terence Digan

If they do Mario, I can’t wait to see what kind of mental gymnastics the pastor goes through to connect Mario to the Bible. Probably something about how Bowser is the dragon from revelations. Oh and when Mario is crucified on some green pipes, they will use a super star to resurrect him.

Victoria H

now my question is why is the stained glass a rose in this version, isn't there only an apple?? cmon, church people

Rae Abigail

I think Jake Sulley should sing I'm Still Standing, specifically the Taron Egerton version from the movie Sing!

Elizabeth Havens

I thought for sure the Clogsworth "we need to go back in time!" line was just supposed to be an inside joke about how he played Marty McFly in their Back to the Future play but then they started doing the Time Warp so if that is the case, very long inside joke.

Rae Abigail

I think Jake Sulley should sing I'm Still Standing, specifically the Taron Egerton version from the movie Sing!

Alexandria Ritz

cogsworth being a clockwork orange reference would be absolutely wild

Bullseye

I think the Beast makes more sense as a regular sinner than as Jesus. He's cursed with sin, but then he's redeemed.

Bullseye

I saw it on tv, without all the audience participation, when I was about 12. I didn't understand that Frank was wearing women's underwear because I had never seen underwear like that before.

Mikey

Referencing the Rocky Horror Picture Show in a CHURCH play of all places is so bold lmao. I’m assuming this wasn’t an 18+ audience, so if super religious families boycotted something like Finding Dory because of a possible lesbian couple, how did this church think their congregation would react after referencing a piece of media well known for its LGBTQ+ themes and influence?

graham blair

Iirc the name Prince Adam for the human form of Beast was just used for the toy line. So the pastor just confirmed he’s a fan of Disney dress up dolls

graham blair

Also, we learn in the DTV sequel that Beast hates Christmas. I can’t help but wonder what theological implications can be gleaned from that fact

Kinetics Video

The Beast was part of an early wave of anticlericalism that would blossom during the Revolution of course

Kinetics Video

Right-wing culture war stuff is generally hyperfocused on new cultural developments. Heck, Disney itself was the anti-Christ to a lot of these people during the Renaissance

Kinetics Video

Mario spends all day mashing his head against a block with a big question mark on them. The really question that you need to be bumping your head into Mario is how can I be saved?

Kinetics Video

I think there was an interpretation from the book Ishmael about that (but it's been a long time)

Kinetics Video

That's my take. It's the new national anthem

Kinetics Video

Not sure they're one of those denominations that can acknowledge Halloween

Ashu +18 Art

Thanks as the number one fan of beauty and the beast , thanks for this jenny

Kinetics Video

I think for Avatar I would like for them for them to forget which one they're adapting and have the subtitle "The Last Sin-Ender." Also feel like it would be sensible to change the scientific mission in the movie to a missionaries to the Amazon type situation. I don't know if the ulterior motive for resource extraction stays the same, but I do want to hear what their take on "unobtainium" is. For a Mario play I feel like they might actually go with Wario as a villain because the costume is much less elaborate and avarice is much easier to loop into Christian tropes.

Rae Leo

as a christian (the left-leaning, old-earth-creation, pro-human-rights kind), these plays are a great example of why I hate christian made media. It’s so infantilizing, has bad/confusing morals, doesn’t “evangelize” like they think it does, and instead it preaches word-salad to the choir. they either need to make avatar next year or donate the set design money to a food pantry or something.

Frita Gee

The way the pot costume makes her arms so little is so fun to watch. icon

Jaz Mei Luo

Also the fact that Jenny said the line and thought the song "Butter" was perhaps the song "Dynamite" 😂

Dan Gibbins

I have heard that theory. I'm 95% sure he was Humperdink in Princess Bride of Christ, I don't know that he also played Miracle Max (which I believe Chinese Undertaker/Timon did). The voice is just so different I can't reconcile them being the same guy.

Dan Gibbins

Look I support the use of underrated Canadian pop princess Carly Rae Jepsen as much as anyone but 1) they did already do a better Call Me Maybe, and 2) I Really Like You was RIGHT THERE. If the Super Mario Bros Easter Show doesn't have Mario and Luigi doing "Greatest Song in the World" by Tenacious D, what are they even doing. Also I'd crucify Mario to a piranha plant. Couldn't be weirder than this one, this crucifixion was not their best work on a few levels. If they see sense and do Avatar, for which I cannot come up with a good pun title, Jake Sully should enter to "Paradise City." And am I the only one who's... concerned is a strong word... noticed that the Youth Pastor hasn't been seen since Joy Story, before the pandemic?

Dan Gibbins

The big hit from one of the most queer-friendly musicals ever made, stolen by homophobic Evangelicals afraid to say "pelvic thrust." Weird. Baffling.

Porge

Honestly I think this being a Canadian church makes a world of difference

MelvinIsANiceBoy

I think the reason for the time warp song is cause the guy playing cogsworth played jesse in th eback to the future musical?

Emilia

Same!

Natalie Arnold

This is the best way to watch it tbh

Paul Bloomfield

I don't have a problem with the use of Free Bird, but if they're going to go for it they really should have gone for it: the nine-minute album version, Belle bursting out of the door with a real guitar or giving it everything on air guitar for such a long time that it goes past awkward and becomes fantastic. But I guess this would take a more confident performer than this Belle.

Rushka Unverricht

Belle being squished to death (well, seemingly anyway) by a battering ram was certainly something, as was her healing hands thing at the end. The whole production felt a little disjointed really, I don't remember feeling that about the other plays in Jenny's main church play video. I guess that's a good excuse to go back and rewatch it again lol! For what it's worth, as a glasses wearer myself, it's kind of cool when Jenny occasionally wears her glasses *shrugs*.

Paul Bloomfield

Also, Jake Sully's song is surely Blue (DaBaDee) by Eiffel 65.

BROGGGGGY

id say that is the best setting to watch it in if you have seen it at least once already on your own or else you wont be able to hear dialogue when theyre shouting 👂📢😓 same with the room screenings

Steven Clark

Frank-N-Furter is Jesus, and he dresses like Tim Curry's character from The Worst Witch because you can't wear lingerie in a church play. Riff Raff is Satan. Rocky is Adam. Janet is Eve. Brad's left out entirely. Eddie comes and goes peacefully as a pastor cameo. Frank-N-Furter reveals that it's HIS OWN body that they've been eating at dinner. He sings I'm Going Home as he's crucified, and then Mrs. Potts comes out as Columbia and sings Home Sweet Home by Mötley Crüe. Then, he comes back on a zipline and sings TiK ToK by Kesha as everybody dances and the house flies off into space on the LED screen behind them.

Steven Clark

It's to keep people from sharing it on playlists.

Julia :)

It’s been a month since I watched this production, and I have still not gotten over the lack of the youth pastor. I miss him.

Neha Dharma

my jaw dropped when they started playing butter (bts). i was not expecting this.

TalysAlankil

i think it's amazing that we have the beast as eve AND belle as jesus, which I choose to believe means they're a t4t couple. how surprisingly progressive.

Xylia Stargazer

Honestly between the bad performances, the lower production value, and the the incoherency of the plot, I feel like maybe they decided on doing the church play this year very late, and had maybe half the amount of time they usually have to write the script and do rehearsals.

izzi!

this was exactly my vision. thank you

Doug

Jenny, your critique of the sermon and megachurches as media at the end was great and really tied the video together. The evangelical "milk-before-meat" communication strategy is really being brought out hard here. The church has this fun, light-heated, and politically bland rendering of the easter story first. Then they follow it with a sermon filled with call-outs to millennialist, apocalyptic one-world government beliefs. It's like money laundering for ideology. Also, anyone who complains about your glasses should be cursed with dry, itcy eyes forever.

Mrs. Policewoman

ahh. shame that also affects mini-player and the watch later playlist. common youtube l

ts_babyjane

lol im like “idk i think jenny would actually like Rocky Horror and/or Monty Python” and then i remembered that. i haven’t watched a single classic animated disney movie since i had them on vhs as a 5 year old. lol and when they were hunting the beast i was like “ oh they do that in the movie? is slapstick? lol who cares.”

Patar

Amazing as always. Side note, I doubt the church would reference the rapists from a clockwork orange in their easter musical, but you never know.

Brian Balster

i like the glasses! it makes you look smart!

Torie Berke

I mean these people confirmed hate the gays.

Ella M

I think they keep using Call Me Maybe because Carly Rae Jepsen is Canadian?

Lily Smith

the Lefou actor was Rafiki in the Lion King of Judah, a casting choice made in incredibly poor taste

Chris Pearce

In the '91 film, the Beast LITERALLY dies and comes back to life, is stabbed in the side like Jesus on the cross, has a scarlet cloak (the soldiers gave Jesus a scarlet robe), and a new resurrection body which looks EXACTLY like how Disney would depict Jesus (long flowing hair, blue eyes, pecs, ragged clothes)... yet Church of the Rock goes with BELLE as the Christ figure???

Olivia H

I am surprised Church of the Rock hasn’t done Doctor Who for their church play yet. Any of the Doctor’s regeneration scenes would be perfect for the crucifixion! Plus they have lots of episode options they could adapt or it would be pretty easy for them to come up with their own storyline. Imagine dancing daleks and cybermen! Plus it would be topical because 15 would have recently debuted!

Void-Senpai

The sermon reminded me of that old Eddie Izzard bit about the Church of England reading from a women's magazine. "Lipsticks are in the frosted pinks this season...which rather reminds me of our lord Jesus Christ. Because surely when he rode into Nazareth he got...tarted up a bit."

Zlo M

Mario seems too topical, i would guess lord of the rings

hdf121

now that we've opened the doors for girlboss jesus I personally really like the idea of doing the hunger games where katniss sings girl on fire by alecia keys (two perfectly out of date ideas but also lines up with the new movie coming out in the fall). It also wouldn't be a fight to the death because that's too heavy its just like...an obstacle course. The post-crucifixion lament is fire and rain sung by effie trinket played by the church all-star.

Jane Mahoney

I'm a huge BTS girlie and I audibly went "oh NO" when Gaston started singing Butter

Jane Mahoney

SAME; I could feel my body caving in on itself

Alexa Galloway

Post Crucificiton Lament woman NEEEEDs to be Birdo next year oh my goodness.

Alex Andra

To the people complaining about a person who needs glasses wearing glasses: do you complain that a person with a broken leg is using crutches? No? Then stop it

Anonymous

I was so sure it was gonna be “with a unique-horn!” which would have made about as much sense as the actual punchline

Austin P. Smith

I think them using Time Warp in their church play actually offends me a bit? Like that's a song that in it's original context would STILL not be allowed in church, but they want to de-queer and sanitize it? I don't like that!

Alex Andra

Also Jenny your sound mixing was perfect on this video!

vera ☮︎

NOTHING COULD HAVE PREPARED ME FOR BTS IN THIS WHAT?

vera ☮︎

SORRY, TIME WARP??? HELLO????

Dylan

Man that sermon was a trip. Speaking as someone who went to catholic mass every week up until his 20s, the homily/sermons where important cause it was the only thing that would change each week. A lot of them did start off with a pop culture reference but then it would tie into that weeks gospel and the point that was being made. Even the bad ones at least attempted to do this. The pop culture reference would usually only be the intro, basic how to write an essay stuff. So like seeing the pastor just daisy chain one reference to another reference to a trip to Egypt to some pretty islands was just something else. It was like hearing a rave song without the drop and you keep on expecting the drop to come but the point never arrives. OOPS all intros

Adam Ryan

"This is one of the most nonsensical crucifixions we've had" is a great sentence.

FZA

They probably get him when they need a guy to do a voice

FZA

Are we happy or sad that the rapping youth pastor doesn't seem to be around anymore? (I did the important research. Pretty much all of the recurring cast members has a bio on their website. Sad to say our guy isn't there anymore. Looks like "always plays the villain" guy is the youth pastor now. Blonde guy has a crazy bio.)

Molly

Lefou was Rafiki in Lion King. I just watched that and this video back to back, so he's not totally new. Hard to recognize him w the mask and stuff though, I never would have remembered if I didn't just watch it.

Lily Smith

love that even like Scarlett Johansson would be a relevant Gorgeous Celebrity reference in both the aughts and nowadays. or, for a famous contemporary but not brand-new celeb, Margot Robbie or Natalie Portman

Art

As a local i could have tried to go see it but doesn't look like this was was as good as prior years. I was really hoping they'd try for Hamilton but here we are.

IndigoRen

smh preacher, the Greeks didn’t call it Cupid, they called it Eros.

Ashu +18 Art

Why is there mate on the play , im argentinian and confused

Big Witch Energy

“This is such an incoherent crucifixion.” No notes.

Janna Jackson Gorog

I’m so glad you talked about the sermon, I watched it and as a regular churchgoer my entire life, it was one of the most unhinged sermons I’ve ever seen in my entire life 😂

Janna Jackson Gorog

Also the fact that the pastor thought Gaston was the hero explains SO MUCH

Suedini

There was a popularish right wing commentator who earlier this year talked about how Gaston was the hero of beauty and the beast. Basically because he kinda epitomised the view of masculinity the guy idolised. I doubt the pastor was referencing it but it turns out media literacy really can be that bad.

Marissa Marchant

This is the first time I've heard the song butter, and I honestly cant imagine a better version. #breakintomyhut

Natalie

oops-all-berries-meme.jpg

Megan

String him up!

Casper Kvan

The sermon technique that Jenny highlights is very similar to the techniques employed by the leaders of cults like NXIVM and such. Just free flowing non-sequitur nonsense that somehow resonates with some people.

Josette DeTour

Couldn't have predicted where that sermon was going to go and I've been made to sit through tons of weird sermons lol.

Joanna M

Is the actress who played Belle the same person or related to the original female lead (Mary/Buttercup etc.)? They look kind of similar.

Fascinated by this church…I’m an American ex-evangelical and my mega church would NEVER have used a female character as a Jesus allegory, or a song from Rocky Horror. They’d probably find all of these plays slightly blasphemous. Hopefully this means Canadian evangelicals are less extreme but apparently they’re still homophobic so boooo. But love your commentary Jenny!

Hoons

The Gaston actor just can't shake his Trump impression from a few years ago, it would seem!

Lee

is the bonus content going to be Jenny goes to the eras tour?? I feel like that’s topical and likely

Kyleigh Archer

Truly, any person who can complain to you about wearing glasses so you can comfortably see, can so suck an egg.

Spencer Hastings

I think the good actor joined the church to try to boost his career when he found out about them. I genuinely love that they are essentially adults putting on a school play. I hope everyone had a fun time.

Spencer Hastings

People don’t go to church every week because they feel they have to. they do so because it is a place where they feel they belong to something bigger than themselves, their friends are also going and maybe they will make new friends. Maybe they will bond with someone over how they didn’t like the sermon this week. And they get to do fun things like put on an easter play. I’m an atheist but when you look at religious institutions in terms of being a third space it is a no brainer people go.

Clara Margot

I knew some Christian theatre kids who would always dance along to the Time Warp, even if they didn't approve of Rocky Horror as a whole. I don't think they even knew what it was from haha

Jenna Stoddard

Definitely not Avengers level, seems more rushed? Maybe they had another idea and it got pulled last second

Janna Jackson Gorog

My theory for why they did Beauty & the Beast is that there must have been easy access to the rights this year. The Christian high school I graduated from also did it and it seems like too much of a coincidence

Cabbage

Somehow despite having been to an evangelical teen church service when I was younger (on a first date no less) where the pastor spent 15 minutes talking about the dinosaurs on Noah's Ark, I didn't expect this to end with the garden of eden having talking snakes with legs

Sparrowlucero

the hat is a steampunk hat from spirit halloween, I think they just saw it while scouting out other costumes and were like "YOOOOOOOOO!"

MrKirbs

Chewbacca Defense-ass sermon

boobookeys

When I saw this I fully thought that Gaston would be the protag, the play opens on him and the symbolism of slaying a "demonic beast" is pretty obvious lol. Also Belle with the comically large holy bible is going to be my halloween costume

Spencer Hastings

They also did a cover of i’m the only one a few years back which is a lesbian song. I think this church is weirdly more accepting than we realize. I mean the pastor is still saying batshit stuff but ya know whatever that is very level 1 things.

Spencer Hastings

I’m shocked they haven’t done harry potter bc it’s a millennial thing and harry does have a die and come back story! And it’s not topical at all so that fits.

frauleinfunf

I'd really love to see them do Phantom of the Opera. I mean, a girl named Christine being led to "hell" by someone she thought was an angel? It almost works too well

Frostfalls

"This is one of the most nonsensical crucifixions we've had" is not a sentence I thought I'd ever hear but here we are

Frostfalls

being taken to an evangelical service for a first date is absolutely wild 😭

Towers of Hanoi

Getting to watch the funny Beauty&theBeast spoof: haha funny Getting reminded of the insidiousness of churches: oh right

O

My assumption is that they did The Time Warp because the events thus far scarcely match Rocky Horror. Belle is running from a storm and goes into a creepy castle, meets a man/creature(Beast in this instance, alien in Rocky Horror) and his cast of strange acquaintances.

Tama Hero

Mario would be crucified on the flagpole obviously

Monica Reynolds

I think part of the problem is that he doesn't seem to have a time limit. Catholic mass has a really specific structure, and everyone expects to be in and out in under an hour. There's no time for the priest to ramble on like that.

Tasha

I feel like it was a strange choice to have Belle be the one get crucified when disney beauty and the beast already has a resurrection in it when the beast gets stabbed and then comes back to life as a human at the end.

Quinn

A lot of Christians hate Harry Potter because of the "witchcraft" so they're probably just playing it safe and trying not to alienate any of the people giving them money

Sqand

And they could play like a gloomy, minor key version of the level end fanfare as the lights dim

Quinn

This comment made me realize how little sense the Time Warp makes even in the context of RHPS. But I guess that whole movie is kind of a fever dream

O

Nothing makes sense in Rocky Horror, that's kind of the point. You just sit and enjoy the glittering camp.

Scott Carter

Came for the Church of the Rock reactions, stayed for the well thought out and completely dead center take down of the Mega Church pageantry format

Desiree DiBerardino

i would love to see Jenny watch Jehovah's Witness original films. A dissection of them would heal my whole childhood lmao

LKB

It was utterly surreal to watch LMAO

Markus D

As someone who watches a lot of people who watch a lot of fundie/right-wing stuff, that's an extremely common quality.

Markus D

I didn't know that she was Canadian, but I guess that's why it was played twice as much as any other pop song that got popular around that time. I'm sorry Carly Rae Jepsen, but if Hell was real, that's the song they'd play to torture me.

Jaz Mei Luo

Hmmmm Taylor doesn't arrive in SoCal for another few months, but perhaps Jenny could have flown out to see her somewhere else!

Jaz Mei Luo

I read your comment and what popped in my head was another song by CRJ called "Bad Thing Twice" 😆

Rish Outfield

Man, Jenny, you are so much more of a man than me for sitting through the post-musical nonsense. I kept breaking off the work I was doing to scream at the pastor, and I didn't realize I was even paying attention.

Doctor Starky

Considering this church's racial insensitivity I'd get really nervous about them doing an anime.

Fini L

I was eating when the transition to “Butter” started and after a short moment of genuinely disbelief (no they WOULDNT) my food genuinely fell out of my mouth.

Markus D

Speaking of bad media literacy: I'm always annoyed that Christians assume that the snake in the Garden of Eden is Satan but there's LITERALLY NO EVIDENCE OF THAT. That story is partially a "just so" story for why snakes have no limbs and women hate them (allegedly). The Jewish stories don't even have "Satan" as the Christians think of the character. There is a Satan but its just a being who challenges people and essentially represents things that might turn a person away from worshipping Yahweh, he's not an evil arch enemy.

Samantha Ansley

I died at, “it’s kind of his grift”. Love how you break these things down.

Ello Asty

I was still a kid when I noticed that this serpent segment of the story sounded a lot like the Tribal Fables we learned about in school that explained "how the cheetah got its spots" or something. God's dialogue with and punishment of the snake definitely doesn't vibe with the idea that this is a fallen Angel or demonic entity of some sort, God literally just doesn't like a tricky snake. haha.

Emily Durkee

The story of the garden of Eden is an ancient Mesopotamian fable of sorts, it wasn't a snake at all, but a representation of evil. I mean you can take it literally, either way it's ancient literature about the nature of good and evil and the origin of the world

Ello Asty

The story makes a lot more sense for religion if you take it as symbolic. But then it's just weird to "retcon" and ignore some of the first actual dialogue you get from God himself in the whole Bible where he's talking to a snake critter while insisting that everything else written inside the Bible has to be literal.

Morgan Waas

I was thinking the same. It's not even a metaphorical resurrection, it's so obvious for the parallel

Totesnotasheep

They could crucify Mario on a giant lit up super star that either goes dark as he's hung up or lights up when it all goes dark. You can have Mario hung up on a giant lit up star while the post crucifixion lament happens. Or they could do the have the cloud guy from Mario kart hold him up so they can use the cable system they used for iron man.

hypercube

my jaw dropped when they started playing the music, like RHPS is such a slutty queer cult favorite

Savannah

When Mario is crucified he could have a crown of pirana plants haha.

Forrest Smith

I can’t remember what they did that was homophobic, do you think you could refresh me?

Captain Langosta AKA The Yellow Dart AKA Kyle

"Mario would be crucified..." "They could crucify Mario..." "When Mario is crucified..." Man, anyone reading these comments without context is going to have a time.

Taylor Calloway

Jake sully can sing "I'm blue da bo dee da bo dy"

Natalie

You're right, but the desecration of our queen Shania would be unbearable

Jackie mclintock

I’m near certain that Free Bird was chosen just to allow belle time to change dresses. “Belle can’t get this dress on in the time it takes you to sing Easy On Me, do you know any really long songs?

Xylia Stargazer

My friend who I made watch the sermon is ex-Catholic and was also really mad about the pastor assuming the snake is Satan, so it seems like it's just a pretty common error than something that's actually inherent to Christianity. I've got no idea though.

Iris

Absolutely love this. I'm super late, but I don't think our LeFou is British- I think he's Nigerian.

Dundough Breadbox

Off topic for this video, but re: Evermore park. Tools and Toys, a recommendation site just mentioned Evermore Park as inspiration to search for gifts related to it. They found a nifty "NC Steampunk Feather Quill Pen and Ink gift set" (on Amazon) on their May 15th post. I thought it interesting they found the park "awesome" (in italics).

Amy Shine

Im not going to read all the comments. Maybe someone beat me to the punch. But they should have included Maurice and then shoe horned in "the joker" by the Steve Miller Band in the scene where they comitt him to the mental hospital. I know they did that song in a different play, but I DONT CARE.

Amy Shine

I wish Howard Ashman was alive to see this

Kara Kaspar

You should definitely put this on youtube

Nate Horton

jenny i appreciate you so much for using the word simplistic appropriately

run_away

I just saw that the star cruiser hotel is being shut down and I came to this Patreon for literally no reason other than to feel vaguely excited for the upcoming star cruiser video lol

erin 🤸‍♂️

as someone who just watched the hunger games films for the very first time(!!!!), i need this more than i need air

erin 🤸‍♂️

i’ve been brainstorming on the idea of an evangelical church pandering to kpop fans by making religious versions of kpop songs and it’s been making me laugh so hard

erin 🤸‍♂️

gee by girls generation but it’s about mary magdalene idfk!!!!!

Jane Mahoney

"y'all wanna know who MY bias is? our Lord Jesus Christ"

Courtney Sheffield

The Peaches song from the Mario movie will entice them. Change the word peaches to Jesus. Gold.

Lucy Barton

Oh my gosh, I knew I'd live to the see the Defunctland Starcruiser video!

Mickey

I find it funny that people here seem to think that the use of the Time Warp would be super controversial to the church, because literally the only reason I have ever seen RHPS is because my conservative Christian mother insisted I had to see it. Unless this church is particularly evangelical I doubt most people cared, and am willing to bet that a decent number of people were delighted by it's inclusion. And given this church's uh... everything, they don't seem particularly evangelical (either that or they are very very bad at being evangelicals). Also wondering if they changed the pelvic thrust line in part because that dance move paired with Mrs.Pott's costume could be considered a bit uh, much. Though they've generally been inconsistent about what they think is too "inappropriate" for a church play so who knows.

Gavin G Whiz

It's also worth noting Freebird was trending on TikTok at the time so it probably was chosen, in part, because someone at CotR thought it would help keep kids interested/might go viral.

Gavin G Whiz

The guitar riff when the long solo picks up pace when HUGE on TikTok around that time and then we had a resurgence of "Wow Freebird is like, a good song and not just a meme."

northco

Very “whatever” detail but I think the McIntosh apple joke is a reference to how a) it’s the national apple of Canada and b) a lot of people seem to prefer baking with or juicing McIntosh apples over eating them normally.

Markus D

I'm way more shocked that your conservative christian mother would show you RHPS. That seems like she's the exception, because in my experience, conservative christians aren't super into LGBT+ people and being open about sexuality.

Markus D

I'm Canadian and I didn't know that we HAD a national apple.

Markus D

In Milton's "Paradise Lost", Satan is the main character and he's the snake in that retelling of the story, so I think that just like how Dante's "Divine Comedy" informed the popular Christian images of the different afterlives, "Paradise Lost" might have popularized the idea of "Satan as the serpent" in media? Also, I'm an ex-Catholic and only really found this out when I read the Bible for myself (which I did skeptically), so your friend might know about that being wrong because they're an atheist rather than because they were a Catholic.

Matt Penn

Seriously, why have they never done the Matrix? You can't get a better Jesus allegory movie than that.

Matt Penn

57:20 Jenny, you just described American politics, especially conservative politics.

Lily

people in general hate macintosh apples for some reason. #softapplesuperiority

Carlos

I love Human Again! I was in the orchestra for a BatB production and it was easily the most fun song to play out of the line-up.

Aramis Calcutt

Are they homophobic? If so I’m not having much fun anymore.

Aimee W

IM SO HAPPY YOU WATCHED THE SERMON AT THE END

Aimee W

“who else thought gaston was the good guy???” *crickets*

Aimee W

jake needs to do “i didn’t just come here to dance” to keep up with carly rae

Aimee W

okay if they did Mario too, the crucifixion should be the little sad dying jump he does from a turtle shell and when he lands hes on “the cross”

Mau

jenny's spiel about the references needing to be topical and new made me think of how any show that references Game of Thrones feels instantly dated despite how ubiquitous and recent they were

Andrew Hill

When Jenny mentioned Mario as the the theme for next year my wife turns to me and said “oh my god! Peaches… is Jesus! Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus I LOOOOVE YOUUUU!” And I need this to happen

apelsindipp

i don’t know if anyone spotted it, but i am very sure that lumiere is played by the guy who did the racist coffin-shopkeeper in the cowboy themed one😭

Millie

howl’s moving castle…

Penguin Gabe

better than that, he gets hit by a shell and falls upside down onto an upside down cross, plot twist, mario is the ANTICHRIST

Jason Perez

So was it not the pastor?! 😭

apelsindipp

hahaha no i don’t think so actually!

MJ

Keith Hasperg

My favorite part is when Dancing in the Streets plays and Jenny starts rocking out 😂

Ben Detrixhe

"Ooh, how would they crucify Mario?" would be a great out-of-context quote to send someone who had no idea what this was about to get them to watch this.

keri

why did it take me a full month to get what the pun in Beaster was

tagliatelle grande

I imagine Mario crucified on a piranha plant, with the giant head above him 😂

KikitheArtist

The sermon really is what church is like though, the pastor rambles about things that are barely connected and then he says "Jesus loves you, bye guys" and we all get up and run away. There's usually singing thrown in somewhere there as well.

M

I got a news alert on my phone about “why millions of Americans are abandoning church” as I was watching this lol

Ashe Trash

I'm honestly shocked the Beast wasn't the Christ figure considering how well his transformation would work into it, but yeah it was pretty cool to see a female Christ figure for the first time. Pretty disappointing Easter play this time around though I gotta say, though I kinda love the Cosworth costume honestly. Also Mrs. Potts was amazing.

Eric

Is this a megachurch? Seems fairly like it would be midsize? I wonder if trying to theme around Beauty and the Beast threw him off cause I don't know how he keeps his job if this is how he sounds every week.

Eric

As someone who has planned bad church plays. Its not really made based on whats trendy or happening. Its just whatever someone thinks of or what people think of and any alignment is coincidence or just cause its in the zeitgeist.

King Cabernet

Regarding the Time Warp... There might be a regional Canadian reason for this. A long-standing tradition in Manitoba are wedding socials, aka pre-Wedding fundraising parties, that were huge for decades, and along the way the song selection the DJs would play for these became very formulaic, and the Time Warp was one of the go-to standards you would hear. For a lot of these Manitobans, even if they never seen the movie, they'd heard and danced to the song on its own so often they're more than familiar with it to not really think too hard where the song is originally from.

Spencer

There is a book called Beauty and the Beast tales from around the World by Heidi Anne Heiner that compiles fairy tales that are similar to Beauty and the Beast( if anyone is interested). In folkloristics they are classified as animal bridegroom tales, which East of the Sun, West of the Moon is one. Cupid and Psyche is considered to be an inspiration for Beauty and the Beast, but Jenny is correct in saying that Cupid and Psyche is not the archetypal Beauty and the Beast story.

Olivia Smith

I may have commented this months ago lol, but I was part of the live chat on the Church of the Rock website and it was so much fun, I hope we do it every year

J B

I'm having a really strong desire to do some quick cardboard backgrounds around my room, really just to have some sort of brains in a jar style lighting, to spook things up. Not why I'm commenting, I love all the a clockwork orange commentary, any other channel would be edgy about it when in reality I think, I probably shouldn't have had access to a lot of these movies when I was a child, but it's a great movie. Id say the excorsist was the worse. I still can't lay flat on my back in a house alone without feeling it shake and getting a little freaked out. And I'm 38! I'm a big man jenny, haha dear God I've been bingeing this and I say this a lot after the trigger warning vid! If you want to find a root of that in a Johnstone type, read any WW2 Pacific theatre literature and you will see a height difference being conflated to dizzying heights. Oh and while I remember the carny singing baby mine was regine from arcade fire, every arcade fire album has one excellent song and its the one she sings. I.e.sprawl II or electric blue. Ok time to ruminate on some more A+ content

Gianna Bruce

Okay so Jake Sully's opening song has to be "Welcome to the Jungle"

sawyer tsaregorodtseva

church of the rock is a charismatic church that believes that the holy spirit is in the church and you can be healed by the pastor through the holy spirit, so part of the appeal is the pastor himself because he does the healing. the website says that they believe in the idea of "supernatural gifts," which is so crazy lol. i wouldn't be surprised if this pastor tells his congregation that he's been anointed by god and has christ-like abilities (which is what the supernatural gifts thing implies and it's something that every pastor like this does) and that they have to come to *him* to experience true salvation and gain access to the lavish lifestyle that charismatics believe god promised everyone. this theology and style of preaching has exploded over the past few decades because it glosses over traditional christian ideas of mortal inadequacy and tells us that we will be given whatever we want if we just ask for it and have faith. it really is nothing like actual church or theology at all because it's not challenging in any way, and it only serves to boost the net worth of clergy and make poor/sick laypeople feel bad about themselves and their "lack of faith." and the big thing of like... charismatic pastors turning themselves into god by telling people that sickness and death can't touch them because they have so much faith, but that is deep christian discourse lol

binka

Nah the way my heart stopped and the amount of fear I felt in the buildup dialogue to Gaston singing butter will never be matched.

Noodles

For anyone looking for a copy to watch, it is available on the Internet Archive.

Julia takla

the fact that this pastor has consistent access to hundreds of impressionable minds makes my stomach turn but also if i met him at like a party or something i think it'd be so fun to get him ranting

Markus D

The answer is yes, and I think it can still be fun to watch these things, but usually with more derision, like in the podcast God Awful Movies.

Markus D

While churches tend to be notoriously bad at understanding symbolism and metaphor, I think they might have seen that the directors are both trans and got all offended about it.

Markus D

Only if he got to run through the church hammering people in the head. Otherwise I feel like it would be unfair to pain him so.

Mimi

I looked down for a second and looked back up and Belle was being crucified while a teapot was singing free bird

Rachel

I don't know how big the church is, but this is definitely megachurch behavior 😂 Something about the copyright infringement...

David Arroyo

I wonder if Jenny will ever cover the illegal Hamilton that a Texas church got in trouble for doing it and live streaming to boot

Abba Slurm

I recommend David Kushner's "Daylight" for Jake Sully's song. I would place it right after the Home Tree burns down. For your delectation, I've come up with the lyrics for such a parody. Probably still needs work. I started out in earnest, then leaned into the cheese. Now I wish I had gone more cheese. Told myself I wouldn’t come here Oh, but I know the price of fear Tryna wash away all the blood I've spilt Such trust is a burden and it’s unfair I’m a sinner tryin’ to atone with a true prayer Soul’s dyed, pained, and tried with my pride and guilt There’s darkness in the distance From the way that I’ve been livin' And it’s the time to resist it Oh, I love this faith, it guides me through the tough times You and I protect Na’vi against the hate crimes Oh, I love this faith, it guides me through the tough times Draggin’ all my sins to the daylight To the daylight, runnin' to the daylight To the daylight, runnin' to the daylight Oh, I love this faith, it guides me through the tough times I will redeem all of mankind Can you spare any mercy that you might find If I'm down on my knees again? Tree down, burned down, Lord, I tried Tried to bring your light, but it won’t shine Please, lead me to a holy end There's darkness in the distance I'm beggin' for forgiveness (ooh) This time I won’t resist it, oh Oh, I love this faith, it guides me through the tough times You and I protect Na’vi against the hate crimes Oh, I love this faith, it guides me through the tough times Draggin’ all my sins to the daylight To the daylight, runnin' to the daylight To the daylight, runnin' to the daylight Oh, I love this faith, it guides me through the tough times Oh, I love this faith, it guides me through the tough times You and I protect Na’vi against the hate crimes Oh, I love this faith, it guides me through the tough times Draggin’ all my sins to the daylight To the daylight, runnin' to the daylight To the daylight, runnin' to the daylight Oh, I love this faith, it guides me through the tough times

Winona Honey

I don't know if anyone else has noticed this (probably but I can't sort through all these comments) but Cogsworth's hat is definitely a re-used costume piece from Back From The Future

Lianne Lairmore

I think you can still enjoy them but them taking the Rocky Horror song rubs REALLY WRONG in that case since it is from a camp queer movie about breaking away doing the "right" thing

Lianne Lairmore

I was having run until that song. A "wholesome" church reusing rocky horror songs for their easter play leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Gabby

This is so beautiful. Thank you for your work

Melissa Dietrick

If you imagine that they reversed engineered the play's logic using the sermon, the play starts to make a lot more sense.

gentlecurveofeggs

At some point, they will do Hamilton and it’ll be awful.

Phoenix Wright

stupid anda very late comment but whatever: my sister has autism, she loves disney movies and watches them all the time. and she had a problem that she would assume that ugly characters are evil and handsome characters are good. when she was 10 our mom had a long convo with her about notre-dame de paris bcs of that. she is 12 now and every time she calls me a large part of our convo is her just checking one more time that she understands who are the villians of disney movies, Gaston and the Beast are very often mentioned in these calls! so, i am not saying the pastor has an undiagnosed autism, but i am saying that his story is believable to me haha

brooke siyajuck

i genuinely cant tell if they changed the lyric in butter from "heart" to "hut" or if he sang it like that because that's kind of how it's pronounced in the actual song but either way it's a weird choice

tickaten

The way i audibly said "no!" When they were setting Gaston up to sing Butter

megachiroptera

i audibly laughed and had to pause the video at "its not delicious" edit: oh my god the sermon analysis is so lovely to watch. im dying laughing and healing catharticly. if your entire internet presence was just this i would inevitably obsessively memorize every word of your catalog.

Sandra Bergholm

I for one am looking forward to them doing les miserables

Siobhan is On

"This song is like a decade old at this point" To be fair, Red (Taylor's Version) had just come out in October 2022 so We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together (Taylor's Version) was very relevant lol

Nox

Omg John the Baptist-sunbaenim!

Ivy Clark

The extremely awkward banter between Cogsworth and Lumiér while Belle is being crucified, followed by Ms. Potts entering and singing freebird is one of the most iconic church play moments of all time.

The Heirs Of History

I was incredibly wary of you critiquing the sermon, but I appreciated how you critiqued it like a video essay rather than on the theology. Also, his sermon was worse than I expected.

Zoë Collis

This comment is the craziest thing to read with no context having not clicked on the video yet

Mara S

I cannot tell you how healing it is to watch someone who didn’t grow up in evangelicalism watch a mega church sermon and try to understand it

Katelyn Barrow

Oof, the shade to Rocky Horror stung a bit...

Zac Lipman

In Super Mario Bros 1, there are those poles at the end of a level where he jumps up and slides down before going into the little castle. Great place to be crucified.

code0011

I had a holiday in Fiji and Samoa last year and his point about poverty a short distance from the beach is so true. Nadi was a bit of a dump but a short distance away is Port Denarau which is a very nicely maintained bundle of resorts. Idk how he was relating it to religion or anything but it's very true that the tourist money is not going to the locals, and they suffer as a result of it

izzsegu

making Herstory one incoherent crucifixion at a time

frecklifox

If they were gonna do something topical imagine: Barbie but instead of Barbieland being feminist and the real world being misogynistic, Bibleland is good and righteous and the real world is secular and sinful

w5w

I'm canadian and the first thing I thought with the macintosh joke is that no one likes that variety of apple. I think the last time I had one was in kindergarten when we manually peeled them with spiral peelers. I have a fond memory of the peelers but thought the apples were disgusting

Scrum Diddely Umptious

Oh my god, is apple peeling on the canadian kindergarden curriculum? You've unlocked a vague, long forgotten memory in me... We went to orchards, apple peeling is totally plausible 🤔

Quinton Walker

It just goes to show how out of touch churches can be when they think they’re entitled to use a song from the very queer Rocky Horror Picture Show in their crucifixion musical.

Robert Romero Jr

Ignore the haters for glasses Jenny. Your frames are always on point.

Marie

I’m very late but he wasn’t at all addressing how tourism money doesn’t help locals. He had a joking tone when he was like “you can’t ever seem to find these spots when you’re actually in these countries” and “wouldn’t you rather be at a beautiful beach than here right now?” but a lot of conservative Christians actively discourage travel. Mission trips are good (using your unskilled labor to build houses for the brown poors! Don’t you feel so fortunate and grateful for your indoor plumbing and A/C?) because they fit in with the opportunity to make everything outside of their realm of influence seem undesirable. They don’t want you to want more, or even different.

Vanessa Bobessa

I hope they rip your ideas for next Easter, they’re top tier. I can’t wait to see the next one.

St

"Just all the characters that breath really heavily into the mic."

Dane Roberts

Am I silly for thinking that the Beast would’ve been a better crucifixion target? Since he gets hunted by a mob and actually does die and come back to life?

clottedscream

My idea for Super Mario Sons of God: opening number: Mamma Mia by Abba Peach introduction: Dancing Queen by Abba Bowser villain song: Super Trouper by Abba, but it's changed to Super Koopa and they ignore how weak of a slant rhyme that is Bowser has Peach in his castle: Take A Chance on Me by Abba, followed by peach rebuffing him Cut back to mario: Mario says "don't you know that he who lives by the blue shell dies by the blue shell?" along the way he recruits donkey kong, toad, a goomba, to be his apostles. Link shows up and theres an unfunny joke about him being in the wrong game and then he and mario sing SOS by Abba about how they're both looking for princesses. Mario gets to the castle and frees peach in a fight with bowser, then they have the last supper and mario washes his disciples' feet with the mario sunsine water gun. He says that one of his disciples will betray him, and then bowser bursts in and retakes peach and toad solemnly says "i'm sorry mario, but it looks like your princess is in another castle" as mario is crucified. The post crucifixion lament: The Winner Takes it All by ABBA. Mario is revived with an extra life and then at the end to praise god they sing Gimme Gimme Gimme a Man After Midnight but with lyrics clumsily changed to be about god

SunzyFrog

The pastor saying the temptress is the villain in beauty and the beast is such a strange take. I feel like in the story if you were to look at it from a bible perspective, the temptress would be god. And be like punishing the beast for his sins so he learns? Idk maybe that’s just me. I just thought it was interesting.

SunzyFrog

A church using a song from rocky horror in a church Easter play is SO FUNNY it makes me think there’s a gay person mischievously recommending songs they know the church would disapprove of if they saw the original material

Talia M

Based solely on the church’s past productions, I feel like the reason that they wouldn’t cast the Lefou actor as the Beast is pretty clear lmao

hallie fritsch

Idk man, a church already tried that and it didn’t go over well

GigglingGoblin

I just love how the church can't handle the fact that one of the first stories in the Bible is just about how snakes lost their legs because one snake was kind of a serious prankster. They're like "he's not a snake, he's the Serpent, and he's actually an evil fallen angel in disguise!" It sort of reminds me of people who try to retell fairy tales but make them super dark and edgy. Or, like, webcomic authors retconning silly episodes into actually super serious and consequential moments.

GigglingGoblin

Right? Just make the story about how he doesn't believe God could ever love him and Belle makes him realize that God loves all straight people or whatever. It feels like a no-brainer.

PurpleIsDebeste

he's so close to realising that in most bible stories god's punishments are way too extreme for the situation and he's a crazed murderer. he's almost there!

PurpleIsDebeste

okay i havent watched the video yet and dont know lefou's actor so prior to watching it i'm placing my prediction that its a racism thing

PurpleIsDebeste

you'll never guess. what it was. its a mystery

My immediate first thought for a mario themed Easter play was an extensive karting sequence, given their love of vehicular props, and then my second thought was how the crucifixion scene could naturally follow on from that. I'm imagining some kind of elaborate sequence where mario is winning his mario kart match but accidentally drives too close (or maybe is bumped by bowser) to the edge of the track, whereupon a piranha plant eagerly punishes the poor plumber, hoisting mario up by biting his head before holding him in position with its little outstretched leafy arms. It serves as an exciting climax and gives the crucifix some much needed character agency after all these years.

Personally I think glasses pretty much always make people look better, but even if you think they’re unforgivably ugly, surely you have to acknowledge that some people find contacts uncomfortable and need to be able to see somehow

The line delivery of “beast” at 0:22:15 reminds me of that one real housewives of beverly hills amsterdam trip argument where one of the housewives says “I’ve had enough of you you BEAST”

I am a little embarrassed at just how hard I celebrated when we did in fact get a female Jesus figure. I’d been betting on who it would be, thought it might be the beast for some reason, and when i looked over at my screen and saw Belle striking a crucifixion pose I literally threw my hands up and cheered

You summarized my problem with megachurch sermons so well that I’m sitting here in stunned silence. Thanks for putting it into words.

What's super funny about the "Call Me Maybe" segment to me is that Belle is wanting to know the number...of The Beast. 😆 Well, one can guess the area code at least.

CCtheVegan

I can’t really be sure, but I think it’s possible the LeFou actor may the be the same person playing Rafiki in the Lion King play-which only adds to the side eye

Danielle Schatten

it's what the actual Yeshua the Anointed of Nazareth would most likely have done tbh

Danielle Schatten

I don't think it's JUST bc of the trans stuff, megachurches are generally not smart enough to figure that out. I think it's because The Matrix is an interpretation of the New Testament that takes the allegory of someone learning they actually are the person who they knew they were all along, are also in fact much more powerful than those who rule them, and, following their execution by those in power, uses both their own abilities and those inherent to all humans to violently remove the System in place from existence, represented by gunning down pigs to the kickass sounds of Rage Against the Machine's "Wake Up," and at a certain point even the dumbest Christofascists can have an "oh... oh wait" moment. Can't have the teachings of Christ in Christianity.

Danielle Schatten

Yeah the funniest thing about this entire milieu, as someone raised in an American Jewish family who was nonetheless consistently exposed to evangelist Christianity, is that... you have to hold, in your head, at the same time, that God is both all-powerful, omnipotent, and loves everyone so so sooo much.... BUT He also explicitly made a guy who exists in a nightmare dimension of pure torture and wants you to disobey God (who made him) because woooo he's eeeevil!!! It's not a religious system that holds water when interrogated with either rigorous esoteric introspection OR Biblical literalism, and only works as a sort of "MCU of theology" where if you just pay a little but not toooo much attention, you'll have something to chat about with Bill down at the gas station who sits in the opposite pew. The fascist government takeover of 2025 wasn't just not surprising, it was INEVITABLE with all this.

Danielle Schatten

Exactly. It's one of the few places left in the US in the 2020s that doesn't explicitly demand that you fork over 15$ to stay longer than 10 minutes. (Just implicitly.)

Danielle Schatten

I was of the same belief but when they panned to the mustache and hat combo on the actor I kind of did a triple-take... like, it's DISTURBINGLY close??? Kind of almost had a fight or flight response

Who in the ch ur h is a huge rocky horror fan? Thats not religiously appropriate at all lol

sean

Wait, I completely forgot this was supposed to be about easter. Why do I always forget it's about easter

Enjelika Ana

Unlike Jenny as an ARMY I instantly knew what song they would be doing… The minute he said smooth like??? I knew we would say butter 😭

Callum Moore

“They could’ve done Little Mermaid if they wanted to be topical”……choir director/Mrs Potts lady as URSULA…

Church of the Rock did NOT do an easter play this year but last year they did Murder on the Jerusalem Express for some reason? The most recent remake was 2017 so I have to guess they were running low on genres or maybe no one with authority in the church has seen a movie in the past 8 years

rusty

my pitch is if they go back to plays they do transformers. its a technical nightmare that only pays off for 5 total minutes but i think they'd really try. lots of costumes made from painted cereal boxes

Kevin Morris

What an incredible combination of sentences.

PurpleIsDebeste

omg thats awesome!! I mean that sucks that movies so out of date and it wasnt even that good. But also i love poirot and murder mysteries so thats really cool! I’ll have to try and find a recording of it

Marie

Idk why I’m here so late but they did do a play, I streamed it, lol. It was just a Bibley play and not an IP riff.

Ella Taran

BTS has entered the church of the rock multiverse

a.s.

why is carl weezer here lmaooooo

N. M.

if they did an Avatar easter play, they could refer to the tree of Eywa as the "burning bush" because of its bioluminescence.

ffeedyourheadd

I was so entranced during the Butter performance that I forgot I was watching a church play, just for it to immediately cut to Belle walking in with a comically large Bible

Rose 300

Definitely not, the pastor has far more prominent wrinkles that were not there in the racist coffin seller character. I think if this guy at least just really looks like someone she's known irl it makes sense she'd be so sure it was someone else, she just mistook it for someone else in the church canon. I also thinkkkk this guy played Timo in the lion king play, but it's a lot more difficult to tell under all the face paint
