Hello friends,

A quick update on the current project, which will ultimately be a truly amazing surprise!

But first, I had to focus, despite myself, for a few days this week on solving a critical problem. My computer, where all my projects are done, decided to die at the beginning of the week. We had very high temperatures here (48°C with the humidex) on Monday and Tuesday, and my old computer didn't like it at all. I think it was the processor that died. The reason I mention this is that I have a question for those who are tech in the field below.

So, let's talk about the project first! I told you the other day about the new Hot Wheels diorama that was under construction. However, the Hot Wheels project has turned into a general project, and I'm almost certain everyone will want to print it. It will be 1:64 scale for Hot Wheels, but it can be enlarged to a larger format to decorate a home theater, a man cave, or simply to demonstrate your adoration for this movie!

We're talking about a building from a great classic movie. An icon that young and old alike know. A saga that has been going on since the 1980s. A three-story building that really exists and features a multitude of details that took me at least twenty hours of research.

I must say I got a little carried away with this project, but believe me, it's definitely worth it!

The project is very large, a bit like last year's Hot Wheels haunted house. Once a year I treat myself to an oversized project, and this year it's this one, I think. Six baseplates, the building alone is 355mm long and 280mm high. And yes, we're talking 1:64 scale. The most incredible thing is that it's all printable on a mini-sized printer!!! I swear, I put all my design knowledge into this model, and I'm very proud of it. I hope you love it as much as I do!

One thing is certain: this is my most complex and coolest diorama project of all the ones I've done so far.

I'm currently finishing it; I think it'll be ready to release by the beginning of the week.

I know this project is taking up a lot of time compared to the other projects, and the beginning of the week hasn't helped, but trust me, you won't be disappointed. I apologize for the exceptional delays on this one.

That being said, I'm back to my computer problem. So the week started with a pretty intense panic. I have backups of my last two years of projects, but I hadn't made backups (like a total idiot) of the projects prior to those two years, which were in a different folder.

So, I started the week by installing the new computer, transferring all the files, installing Autodesk Inventor on the new workstation, and trying to reboot the old computer. Stubborn, the old computer still refuses to reboot.

This is where I need your advice, if you're knowledgeable: When I reboot the computer, the screen lights up, I can hear a process starting, and the "HP" logo appears on the screen. Then nothing happens... It stays frozen on the HP logo forever. Do you think it's the processor or is the hard drive dead?

I'm going to buy an external hard drive enclosure in which I'll mount my hard drive and see if I can access my data on the new computer, but I'd still like your opinion! Thanks in advance!

That being said, I won't take up any more of your time! I'm going back to work on the project and will get it out to you as soon as possible! Have a good day/evening everyone!

Pascal

Try getting into the bios by hitting ESC or delete on the key board while it’s booting up. See if you can see the hard drive under the advanced tab. If you can not see the drive then it’s likely the culprit. If you can see the drive try booting directly off the drive or boot in safe mode.

James Blaine

Will the computer boot into recover mode? Should be able to press F11 when you turn it on and get into the recovery settings.

Trisha Brown

I've had good success dropping one in an enclosure and recovering the data. You might be fine

Jesse Fabbro

Sounds like hard drive has failed to me. Processors have sensors to shut down the system when they over heat so it's less likely it's the cpu.

Mark

Take out the hard drive and access it is a great idea

Mark

Also a shop can always access it and recover your files!!

Chris Heap

Even without being able to boot to the operating system on the original computer, if you’ve taken the drive out and inserted it into an external enclosure, it SHOULD allow you to see your files and recover them. Obviously this is assuming you’ve got no disk encryption enabled or other security measures in place.

I am a network engineer with my own company and am happy to help. I would initially suspect the drive but I would expect a boot failure message. Either way it sounds like it's time to replace it and you can reach out to me directly and we can discuss further on getting your data.

Hi Pascal, I can guarantee you it is not the processor. If it were, there PC would not start up at all. It doesn't sound like you have a failed drive either. This actually sounds like a corrupt windows update. If I were you, I would boot it up and then let it sit for a day or two. It may be trying to install an update but getting hung on something. These things can work themselves out by waiting it out. If that doesn't work, look up how to boot into recovery mode and do a windows repair.

zumopapsdn

When I had that issue it was the hard drive, if that is a extra hard drive that you installed, take it out and see if it will then boot up. I had a very similar issue and once I removed my hard drive that I installed everything booted like normal. I didn't realize that was the problem until I trued to hook it up to a sata to usb cable and it caused a brand new laptop to go into the same no boot issue.

John Lockey

Yes, get the enclosure and hook it up to your new pc. At least that way, you can see whether the drive is good.

steve25

is it the ghostbusters firehouse ? 😍

Ruthanne

my hp hangs up and wont start if i have extra hard drives even usb ones attached i turn them all off I have a very long usb port hub, then reboot it still can take awhile but at least it starts up. I hope it works out for you. i swear it was from an update because it just started doing this after a auto restart (which is now turned off)

Jerry Martin

Potentially bad RAM as well. Typically, the BIOS will report an error when it is unable to find a bootable partition on a hard drive. Try to get into the BIOS and see if all the RAM you expect to see is reported there. Good luck!

Matt

Something is not letting it boot. Remove all peripheral devices, external drives especially. Then see if it boots up. 48c is about 120f and most air-cooled processors will get very warm at that temp. Is it a laptop or desktop? When was the last update installed? June 10th was release day for Windows patches. You should be able to remove the drive and slave it into another system if you are not running bitlocker.

Michael Blumel

You will be able to access the files from the old computer. You can pull the drive and connect it internally, or in the external enclosure as you mentioned. Don’t sweat it.

Scott

If it stays on the HP logo page it could be that it is not able to complete the initial POST (power on self test) prior to loading the BIOS/UEFI. Removing the hard drive and using an enclosure should help you get to the files. Is your drive an SSD or mylar platter drive?

Shelley Harding

is it the blues brothers city hall county building?

Jim

Yes if there are 2 memory sticks, removing one has fixed this problem for me a few times on older PCs

Gregory A Henry

I just got back from a vacation the other day, and I came home to my computer not booting either. Mine was stuck on the boot screen asking for a startup disk, and it turns out my hard drive (SSD) was fried. The computer itself was fine, but I had to reinstall Windows and all my programs again. Fortunately, all my data was offline, but I learned the importance of making consistent backups. That being said, I would start with trying what others and you have said about trying a disk enclosure to access the disk, but if you can't (like I couldn't), then your drive may be fried.

Paul G

My vote is bad RAM.

Thomas Jannicelli

Did you hear any clicking coming out of your drive before it stopped working? If you hear clicking in that that keep getting worse over time than yes your hard drive failed but that doesn't mean you still can't get the files off of it would have to do more than likely use a recovery service to possibly put heads in it or something to get the files off of it if it's bad. Is there any other beeping that comes from the computer or does it just freeze if you hear a certain sequence of beeps they mean something if you have any questions please get a hold of me. It could be a simple too as the thermal paste behind the processor being old dried up and it's not cooling the processor good enough if you take the computer case apart make sure the fins and fan are clear on the heat sink for the processor and if you're knowledgeable enough you can remove that heat sink clean off the thermal paste with Q-tips and rubbing alcohol let it dry then reapply the thermal paste and the heat sink and that will also help your problem I tend to re-thermal paste my computer as every 3 years or so if I keep them long enough

parker95608

Worst case scenario, you can remove the hard drive and use a toaster- a hard drive docking station. I bought this one when my computer died- https://a.co/d/2hdqZ00

Tvhawk

Sounds more like some corrupt windows files. Should be able to just do the enclosure to grab your files then try using a boot usb drive to install a fresh copy of windows. (Or do a repair if that suits you better.)

Tvhawk

Ooooh this! So much thia! I once had an endless loop like this and it turned out to be a usb sd card reader!

Corey Skipper

I really wanted to add not anything about your computer because everyone here has had great suggestions. I wanted to ask about your backup solution. If you don’t have one already you should really look into a nas of some kind. I have a couple myself and they have saved me many of times.

Jason Weaver

You can try repairing the boot sector of the drive. On old windows it was a fixmbr command. You also may be able to do it with the install software.

Kat Smith

I would be interested if you can read the drive if set to a slave drive on another computer? Troubleshoot what it isn’t, not look for what is wrong. Deduct that by knowing what is right,

Paul Elson

unplug the drive and and see boot it, see if it will go past the HP logo and come up with something like "no hard drive found". if it does that they the HD is the issue.

Gerald Waite

Sounds like a processor issue. If it was the drive you would get different errors and be able to go into bios and other setting.

Adam Jones

Thanks for the detailed update Pascal. So sorry to hear about your computer nightmare. When I have a computer failure similar to yours, I end up pulling the hard drive out of the bad computer, and putting it into an external hard drive enclosure, set it to be a slave, and then I can access all the files on it. Doing this, has saved my butt quite a few times, and I've also done this for my kids when their older computers refuse to boot up. I wish you luck!!!!!

PA1 MAKER

Will try that tomorrow! Thanks. :)

PA1 MAKER

F11 doesnt seem to work anymore. I will try what Anthony said below with ESC or DEL tomorrow to see if it works. If not, i'll go buy an external enclosure. Thanks for your help! :)

PA1 MAKER

Thanks Trisha. Probably what i'll do tomorrow. :)

PA1 MAKER

i'll go buy an external enclosure tomorrow. Thanks for your help! :)

Anthony Narel

Good luck! And I mean as soon as you hit the power button start spamming the esc/delete keys. Feel free to shoot me a message if you need more help

PA1 MAKER

Thanks my friend. Its been sitting for the last two days on the HP Logo. Doesnt seem to help. F11 doesnt work. I'll try with the ESC/DEL like someone said below and if it doesnt work, i'll go buy and external drive enclosure to see if i can recover my data... :|

PA1 MAKER

Thanks a lot! I'll check that! :)

PA1 MAKER

I'll have a look at that! Thanks a lot! :)

PA1 MAKER

I will have a look at that. I only have one external drive plugged into it, and it has been there for the last two years without issues, but it cost nothing to try that solution. Will check that tomorrow. :) Thanks a lot.

PA1 MAKER

Its a workstation, but its freakin' old... lol. The last update was somewhere around last year i think... But windows told me last year that updates for the windows version i'm running on this old boy is not supported anymore... Will try with the external drive enclosure, and if it works i'll take all my old data from it and send the old pc to the recycle center... lol.

PA1 MAKER

No clicking at all. I had a friend hard drive in the past, which was clicking at the startup, so i know how it would sound, but this time there's no sound at all... Nothing. Pure silence, with the HP logo frozen in the middle of the screen. That computer is very old, so i'll try to get my data back with an external enclosure, and after that i'll send that baby to the recycling center i guess.

PA1 MAKER

I have a 1TB external hard drive where i copy all my files for the last two years. But the problem is that my first projects were in another folder and i totally forgot to backup this one too. I feel like an idiot for not backing those files, but now i know that keeping project files in multiple folders can be a stupid idea... 😅

PA1 MAKER

Thanks Adam! That's my plan for tomorrow. I'll go buy an external drive enclosure, and see if i can have access to the content of the old hard drive on my new computer... I did it in the past for another computer, Hope it will work this time too! 🤞🤞🤞

Kevin 3D Prints Stuff

Since you already have a new PC, you can try downloading the windows install and create a usb stick to boot to for recovery mode. External enclosure for the drive is not a bad idea, though. Good luck!

Corey Skipper

I would totally look into getting a small nas to start. I wouldn’t get anything massive just something that hold maybe 4 hard drives. You don’t need to put 4 hard drives in it to start. Maybe like a 4 bay synology nas. Synology is great for beginners. Just something to look into.

Jamie Robinson

I'm very intrigued by the new model!! I'm always a sucker for printing big things!! 😁

Jamie Robinson

I hope you get your PC going soon. Should be an easy fix for the right person... I am not that person lol. 🤗

Annette Kakazu

Get a hard drive enclosure. It's easy to install the drive into the enclosure, then it just plugs in with a USB. let me know if you need help (ex-IBMer here). I would start taking backups. Just plan it on the same day of the month and make it a habit (or install a program to do it for you).

Ian Chess

Can I still access the dropbox with last months credentials? or how do I do that?

Adam Jones

Yes, until Pascal posts the new info for each new month. At this moment he has not, so you can still use June's info to log in.

Tennile Edwards

Blues Brothers came out in the 70s, right?

Jess Roberts

If you ever need tech help, my family has a IT services company you can check out: brotherlytechnology.com They would be happy to help.

Barb Gucik

Hi Pascal, I am new to your page on Patreon. I love your designs so much. You take so much time and effort to give us wonderful designs with instructions & the pictures are fantastic. I am very much looking forward to your new project. Please keep up the good work!

Mark

I don’t know how to do that
