This video feels like a culmination of all my years teaching Economics students about taxes. It feels good to get this all into one, less than 20-minute video. Oh, and I seriously did owe the IRS money. That wasn't acting.

Just a heads up. Next week is the next episode of Supreme Court Briefs, but the week after that is a big video I have planned about 9/11. I am nervous (and honestly a bit emotional) about it, so your feedback will be extremely valuable.

Thank you for your continued support!

Every Type of Tax Explained

Mr. Beat explains every major type of tax and reveals his favorite types of taxes at the end. I know, he didn't cover ALL of them. Also, he really did have to pay the IRS. That was no joke. You have to pay it. If you don’t, there will be bad consequences and stuff. Now, why on earth do we have to pay taxes? So the government can pay for stuff. Now, remember, as I said in a previous video, the purpose of the government is to protect society. More specifically, to resolve conflicts, defend a society from other societies, or provide public services. That costs money, and they need to get that money from somewhere. What are they going to do, borrow tens of trillions of dollars to pay for everything? Hahahahahahahha but yeah seriously, they do that, too. Now remember, in a democratic society, our tax dollars should ideally go where we want them to go. Understandably, many get upset when this does not happen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2t1zK24_8MU Regardless, let’s go through all the major types of taxes that governments usually collect. And at the end of the video, I will reveal the type of taxes that I don’t mind so much. In conclusion, there are MANY types of taxes I haven’t even mentioned, but those are the main types. But yeah, in general, there’s three types of taxes. Taxes on what you buy, taxes on what you own, and taxes on what you earn. So, what’s YOUR favorite type of tax? Or should I say, what’s the type of tax you hate the least amount? Let me know in the comments below.

I'm looking forward to these videos Matt! Thanks for putting them together--education along with entertainment! "Edutainment" . "Best Type of Tax" is a curious title! LOL--didn't know there was a "best" any kind of tax! :-)

I owe the IRS money as well. But it would be nice to know how I can contact them to know why I owe them money.

Matt Beat

They are notoriously very difficult to get in touch with. I just sucked it up and paid it. It can be very frustrating.

Kasonia Kisangani

Ehh, frustrating. And I was supposed to get a refund this year. I may suck it up, but if I find out how to get a hold of them, I'll be ready to wait over an hour on a freakin phone call.

Mr Beat: Makes a video about taxes *the Republican Party would like to know your location*

Former Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes jr. once said “taxes are what we pay for civilized society.” Well done on this video and your coverage of all sorts of taxes! I wish economics classes were mandated from middle school onwards. We can argue about tax policy and rates, but I think it would be great if the public was more educated on how their tax dollars are spent. Also, loved the Seinfeld and Parks and Recreation clips you integrated into the videos!

Matt Beat

Well thank you. And yes, I love both of those shows. :) Oh, and sad to say, I was the one who introduced the Economics class at my high school. That's right, for decades, there was literally no economics class available there.

I say that, then realise 0:24 exists so they’d probably back off

Sales and property taxes here in Illinois makes me want to cry. I know people paying 10k + a year. Its not even in Chicago. 😰

Devin Canada

i get more mad at having to pay social security then income tax but im not in too high of a tax bracket.

Devin Canada

I think a progressive tax is damaging and prefer a single tax. it is like punishing someone for success.

In Zambia the way i explained how there can be any version of poor is i showed them how much it cost to be born and die. (in zambia birth is free, and a bareal plot is free.) i useally end my lecture with "then the Government taxes it!" they allwys give me a shocked look.
