I am always fascinated by Iran, and I remember well when I first learned about the Iran hostage crisis. As a kid, this frankly horrified me that people could do this. Later in life, I read Stephen Kinzer and it opened my eyes as to why the Iranians hated the American government so much. Once you realize the full story, it makes complete sense. However, it is truly sad that these Americans had to endure this for 444 days.

Also, this is another collab with Tariq from Hikma History. Be sure to check out his video as well once it is up.

On the flip side, the crisis kind of strengthened the prestige of the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. That said, when Iraq invaded Iran the next year in what became known as the Iran-Iraq War, much of the world didn’t come to their rescue, and perhaps a big reason why was the hostage crisis. Even though Iran and the United States reached a deal, relations between the two countries have stayed sour long afterward. Even today, more than 40 years later, tensions are high. There is no United States embassy in Iran and no Iranian embassy in the United States. In fact, the two countries haven’t had any formal diplomatic relations since 1980. Before we begin today’s story, let me tell you about these things called embassies. Embassies are a permanent form of diplomatic missions. Basically, it’s where a group of people from one country represent that country within another country. They are there on behalf of their home country to carry out good relations with the government of the country they are in.

Another great video! Obviously I knew this happened, but I probably haven’t researched it as much as I should have up to this point, so this was really helpful. Thanks!

I was aware of this event. However, I wasn’t all that familiar with all the details of what caused it. You did a great job of breaking it down. I can’t imagine being held hostage for a day let alone 444 days! I am glad the hostages were freed. I feel like we didn’t learn much from the ordeal foreign policy wise and we just adopted a “why shouldn’t we” approach to middle eastern affairs vs. “why should we”

Matt Beat

Yeah I agree that we didn't learn much regarding foreign entanglements. It's that "American exceptionalism" mentality that can cloud judgements.
