I want to thank Hilbert from the channel History with Hilbert for helping me and collaborating with me on this one. He is British but of Dutch descent, so he especially paid close attention to the history portion of my script and the pronunciations. In fact, I went ahead and had him record some pronunciations in the actual video. :) Anyway, please also check out his video looking at how and why Belgium broke away from the Netherlands.

I've decided that the next American state Comparison video will be Missouri and Arkansas Compared. Hopefully that will be up in December. I also have Shanghai and Beijing Compared planned.

Happy Thanksgiving if you celebrate it, and thank YOU for your continued support!

They’re Low Countries. Both are along the North Sea, historically at the so-called “crossroads of Europe,” and both do have a lot in common as you might expect, but Europe being Europe, there are lots of differences you maybe wouldn’t expect. Oh before we move forward, I should say that, at least in the English speaking world, we call folks native to the Netherlands “The Dutch.” Now THEY often call themselves Nederlanders. But yeah most of the Flanders region of northern Belgium also speaks Dutch, and this region in particular has much more in common with the Netherlands. Belgium actually has three official languages. Dutch, French, and German. In Belgium’s capital, Brussels, they speak both Dutch and French, and most Belgians can speak both Dutch and French to varying degrees. Down in Wallonia, they mostly speak French. Oh, and if you’re watching this video right now from the Netherlands, you can likely understand me, as nearly everyone there can speak English, while that’s less likely if you are watching from Belgium, as less than half of Belgians can speak English. Before we move forward any more, I suppose I ought to bring up the elephant in the room. No, not literally that elephant in that room. It’s a metaphorical idiom, goodness. Ok, so a really important thing I should have brought up already is that Belgium used to be part of the Netherlands.

At this point I can see why you changed the perks on your Patreon tiers, most suggestions are for your ‘compared’ series so it’s way more likely for one’s video to appear if it’s, for example, a suggestion for a Supreme Court Brief. Also, another really great video! I’ll check out the other video you mentioned as well.

Matt Beat

I want to make them all, but simply can't keep up. Another thing is, sometimes Patreon supporters would suggest videos for topics that I know would perform horribly. And thanks! Have you ever been to either?

I went to the Netherlands with school in 2018 and I took home some clogs and tons of cheese (Houda cheese in case you’re curious). There were tons of cheese sampling stations in the city centre and I made sure to take the opportunities 😉

Me too, my personal favourite is Comte but that’s french. The cumin cheese in the Amsterdam area is really something too

How could you not mention Belgium’s greatest export “The Muscles from Brussels” also known as Jean Claude Van Damme? Haha. On a serious note, I learned a lot about these two countries from this video. It is crazy that a 1/3 of the Netherlands lies below sea level. At least they are making the necessary investments to try and slow rising sea levels as best they can. If only the US took climate change As seriously! Thanks for this video and all your content and Happy Thanksgiving.

Matt Beat

Fun fact, the first rated R film I ever saw was a Jean Claude Van Damme movie. 😄

I guess I will have to start my workout on the treadmill. If you want some graphic assistance on Arkansas and Missouri, let me know, Matt!
