Hi Patrons ! 🥰

Two months ago I worked on an illustration for Disney Pixar's social media and I mentioned on Patreon I'd make a post about it someday. Some of you seemed to be interested so I am finally taking the time to tell you how it went !

Disney contacted me in February and asked me if I would be available to do an illustration for their social media for International Women's Rights month (March). I couldn't say no because it was my dream to work with Disney since I was a little baby !!

They asked me to pick a Pixar female character, draw them and write a little text about why I picked this character, how I identify to them. Of course I immediately thought of Merida because she's the best, but she was already taken by another artist so I went with Violet from The Indestructibles.

I worked on my iPad and Procreate - working digitally on this project was easier because it's faster to make changes !

They gave me a very specific schedule, I was impressed !!
They would sent me emails a few days before my deadlines (I had at least two deadlines a week) to remind me to send them the revised sketch (for example).

First, they asked me to sketch 2-3 ideas, so I sent them these little thumbnails :

They picked #4 ! So I went ahead and drew a more detailed sketch - her proportions in my first sketch were not close enough to Violet's in the movie, so I had to fix that.
Then I sent them this second version (left) - on the right is their revisions for my second sketch (in purple) :

For each sketch, they would send me a revised version with guidance and  purple lines to tell me what I had to change. It's an effective way for the artist to let the artist know how to fix the drawing quickly without them having to ask any questions.

My 3rd sketch :

They approved the third sketch so I did a first colored version :

They thought the colors were too warm and asked me to make it colder, more purple/pink (here's a before after) :

They also asked me to fix some very subtle details - her leg's shadow, her right foot and the little hole between her arm and thigh (left is before, right is after the changes) :When they first contacted me, they insisted on the fact that it would be my own version of Violet, in my own style. But she ended up looking like Pixar's original version of their character. I think the final illustration looks cute, but when I started working on this project I thought it would look more like "me". Overall I think it was a great experience, the team was super nice and enthusiast 😊

Here's the final version !

I learned a lot while working on this little project !
I don't know if this post was interesting, but I hope you liked it 🥰

Thanks again for your support on Patreon !! 💕🌸✨

Sibylline

I work for a company that deals with Disney and Pixar designs on a regular basis, it’s crazy how very specific they are about their designs and characters being kept on brand. Your own interpretation was just as beautiful 😍 seems odd they’d ask you to draw it but not allow your own style on top of it. Well done for the beautiful art ❤️

I feel like changing the nose and the color pallet is where it really when the piece seems to leave your style. The other changes help the character to be more recognizable. But I think it would be interesting to see the same piece with your original color pallet and nose.
