Interlude 🐚 Mermay #1 (redraw from 2019 !) (Patreon)

Hello Patrons,

Happy May ! This month I am going to *try* to paint some mermaids for Mermay 🐚 I am not going to follow a prompt list. I decided to paint whatever I wanted to paint !

So I started with a redraw, it's based on an illustration I did in 2019 called Interlude :

I remember being very proud of this one back then (I thought the water looked so cool !). Now I think it's overall not good, but the composition was cute.

So I kept the same concept/shapes and came up with this sketch on Procreate :

I kept the same color concept but made it warmer (teal instead of blue and orange instead of pink), her attitude looks more natural and I thought showing the end of her tail would be nicer and important to understand the character. I changed the clouds too to fill the negative space a bit more and I think it adds an atmosphere to this painting.

And here's the finished painting on paper (+ a bit of editing in Procreate) :

I changed the shell while painting because I thought the shape was strange, and I added some starfish too to make it more "alive" and fun 🌟 

Sometimes I forget I can get better at drawing/painting as I practice every day, so seeing these two illustrations side by side is a good reminder that even if we feel like we're stagnating with our art, it just keeps evolving ! 😊
