Finding the proper jewelry for 1/2" nipple piercings when this polaroid was taken- somewhere around the end of the 1970s or the beginning of the 1980s- would have been a hard task to undertake. The few companies making body jewelry at the time were more likely able to handle 16g stock than 1/2", so sometimes it came down to just making it work. 

The model, Viking Navaro, used stainless steel tubing with nuts & bolts to hold them in place.
