Sorry for the wait on this, completely forgot to post it last time!

EPISODE 15 Wow! You’ve made it to the least rated episode of the entire show. Not that it was a bad episode it was actually quite intense but the implications of it. Bobby being dead. I actually can never listen to Work Song by Hozier ever again, my body has a trauma response to it. Where you expecting that death at all? Was there any other character you would have preferred to go? Or do you think they made the right decision?

buddiefan911

EPISODE 16 This isn’t a question but a really interesting fun fact. The fans knew Bobby was going to die because they filmed the funeral in a public street. Basically it started because some randomer posted a BTS of a firefighter funeral. Fans initially didn’t realise it was for 9-1-1 until someone posted that the show was filming there that day. Everyone became nervous. The next thing that was posted was a photo of a coffin with “118” on it and then you another pic that showed El Paso fire department. Instant panic for about 30 minutes for all Eddie fans. The next thing some fans who went to see the filming seen Corinne(May) and Elijah(Harry) who hadn’t been on the show since s7 and then Ryan also on set. Then a photo of Angela in all black and the rest of the cast in formal firefighter uniforms. Then a photo of Bobby’s turnouts on the back of the 118 engine. Someone filmed it live on tiktok. You couldn’t write this whole thing. It sent the whole fandom into chaos.

Episode 17 I am pretty sure that I am in the minority of how the fight with Buck and Eddie was handled. Grief is one thing- it can make you lash out and say things you don’t mean. But in this case it is completely uncalled for. Buck is quietly handing his grief. He isn’t spiraling. And because he’s handling it in a way that Eddie doesn’t like it’s wrong. Buck is doing what Bobby said he should do- the team is going to need him. Everything is going to be ok. But the team is going to need him. So what does he do? He helps. Buck says NOTHING about himself. He didn’t make it about him at all. He has internalized what Bobby’s last words are. Only the fans see him breaking down. And you know what? In this episode we see everyone banding together except Buck. Eddie and Hen complaining about the grief assessments. Buck obviously trying to reach out and getting nothing in return. It is a common thing in this show that everyone has someone. But I don’t see anyone there for Buck. So of course everyone doesn’t want to bring Buck into the conversation. They don’t want to actually try and talk to him about his grief. They just complain “no one knows how to talk to you.” Except no one but Maddie even really tried. The amount of anger that Eddie has- that he always has is a problem. He needs serious therapy that he still has not gotten. He refuses to actually actively better himself. Buck has had a lot of character growth that is ultimately ignored because no one can move past his probie year. They all still think of him as an overgrown man child and that’s how he gets treated. Meanwhile, Eddie’s development has been stale and he has made no significant changes and has had no real consequences-other than Chris leaving for a few months. Eddie said some things to Buck that if it were me? That friendship would be over. I’d be done. Not only the words but to put your hands on me? No. Absolutely not. Of course Buck would be happy for Eddie. He got what he needed in Texas. Buck isn’t dumb- he’s not going to think that Eddie’s not going back to Texas. And he’s been helping the entire time IN Texas. Isn’t it so wild in the conversation how it starts out Buck is making everything about him, when in actuality Eddie turns it into HIS pain, HIS problems. And immediately, Buck goes to comfort Eddie- even after all of the shit he spewed out. I understand how hard this was for Eddie - especially not being able to be there. I’m also not one to compare grief- but let’s be real. Buck was there, he had to watch the man he loved- his father figure dying…. I can’t even imagine. And to try and make Buck think he’s making this situation (both Eddie’s job and Bobby) all about himself is total crap. You can’t say he’s not talking about it and then say he’s making it all about himself. Damned if you do damned if you don’t, I guess. What gets me about what Eddie said to Buck is he means it. Eddie is grieving and he’s angry so I get why he’s lashing out at Buck. But we’ve seen Eddie say “you make everything about you” to Buck multiple times now throughout the show. In situations where he’s angry but also when he’s already calmed down. He’s not just lashing out to hurt Buck, he reallly thinks Buck makes everything about himself. And not only is that an uncharitable thing to think about your best friend, it’s also just wrong most of the time. It’s not intentional, and it stems from so much crap he dealt with as a kid- which Eddie ALSO knows. Still, he twists the knife and tries his hardest to hurt Buck. And I have never seen Buck treat Eddie that way. And the absolute kicker is using Chris as a bandaid to smooth things over with Buck. He doesn’t even actually apologize. We see his aunt giving Buck the first real talk about his grief, and she is kind about it. What Eddie should have been. I was a buddie shipper until season 8. But after the Texas storyline, and this I can’t. This has Soured Eddie for me in ways I can’t even explain. I don’t think he’s evil or abusive, but I do think he crossed a line and I have a hard time getting over that. As I stated in the beginning I know that I’m in the minority- especially for people who ship Buddie, as a lot of them see this as romantic or with the intent of romance. Also- not so fun fact- the director wanted the fight to be a lot more physical. They wanted Buck to be more “bratty” and Oliver wouldn’t do that. Ryan got physical without permission and surprised Oliver with the push and the grab, which is not ok. Obviously Oliver didn’t make a huge deal out of it, but in my book that is very disrespectful of a cast partner to do. Oliver talked about it in a few interviews, and has expressed that it was all smoothed over, but yeah. Not ok. Now that I’ve rambled my piece, what are your thoughts on this? What would you like to see going forward? Do you think this fight will change the dynamic in Buck and Eddie’s relationship going forward? This has been edited for the fact- as I did misspeak when including Ryan in the “wanting to be more physical” I do however stand by the rest of the statement. The other person that I am talking with below was kind enough to correct me on that. I believe they also changed a lot of their question to reflect our conversation, so I hope it’ll be a fun way to hash out the differing opinions of this show!

buddiefan911

Just want to say we all have our own opinions on the fight which is fine but that last part of your post is factually untrue. Ryan mentions in an US weekly interview that the director said “you want to hit the guy right?” and Ryan Guzman said no to it. Oliver never said he didn’t want the fight to be physical, he just said he didn’t know Ryan was gonna get up in his face and that in the end they’ve worked together long enough/trust each other enough. Oliver also said that while he wasn’t doing it at the time but that Buck does make a lot of issues about himself. So let’s not be purposefully spreading information here. Not to mention the director was also a first time director of the show so he wasn’t fully aware of their character traits.

Amber Rehrer

Did Ryan knowingly put his hands on his costar without the costar being aware that it was going to happen? Yes. He did. I wouldn’t want someone putting their hands on me without permission no matter how long I’ve known them for, especially in such an intense situation. He intentionally made the scene more physical. He didn’t hit Oliver, but yeah, he deviated from the script and made it more violent- which is what I meant. I would also say oliver also said in an interview that he was like “get off me man” to Ryan. That tells me he didn’t like or want the physical reaction. It’s not misinformation just because Ryan didn’t hit Oliver, or Oliver didn’t say out loud “don’t hit me”. Pretty basic levels of respect were broken. I’ve got nothing against Ryan, but what he did was wrong and that’s a reason there are coordinators for these sorts of things. I appreciate the correction because my words were misconstrued. So thank you for that!

buddiefan911

In the end Oliver said he was okay with that because he trusts Ryan and that they’ve worked together a long time. He also talked about it at a meet&greet saying that he loved doing that scene. Also he was not “pushed” up against a wall, all that happened was that he put his hand on his shoulder and Buck got moved slightly back bc of the tiny force Ryan had. This is what I mean when I say people act like this is some act of horror/severe violence when it was just a little push. The scene was clearly meant to show two people grieving. I wish people had this energy whenever Buck purposefully pushed Eddie leading to an ankle injury in s7 because he was jealous? These are both flawed people, and it shouldn’t really sour you on their characters. Again though, that’s your opinion

buddiefan911

EPISODE 17 Buck and Eddie acting like a divorced/married couple again. Shocker. What did you think of the kitchen fight and who did you think was in the wrong? Eddie was NOT wrong in saying that Buck makes things about himself a lot of the time, even if it’s subconsciously (example this season the episode where he was sabotaging the house viewings, and even if you go through the seasons, it’s actually a pattern of his). It’s something the actors have even said. Oliver Stark said that Buck makes things about himself so much that Eddie just has PTSD from it even though it was not something Buck was particularly doing in THAT moment. Eddie could have definitely handled it a lot better. I feel bad for him cause you can tell he’s just lashing out because he’s grieving and Buck won’t let them grieve together because he won’t talk about it. Poor Eddie had no one in Texas to grieve with. But then on the other hand, Buck genuinely doesn’t know what to do with his grief, he’s trying to handle it by himself and he obviously didn’t mean to upset Eddie by not being open with him. This kitchen fight has caused a divide in the fandom in the way the lawsuit arc did. There’s one part of the fandom who think’s Eddie had a right to lash out since Buck expects everyone to do grief assessments but won’t share his own grief and that he made Eddie leaving LA again about himself (by complaining that Eddie didn’t tell him). There’s another part of the fandom who think Eddie’s the worst/abusive and a seriously angry guy even though he hasn’t been angry since s3 when he was going through his grief about Shannon and is allowed to get a little angry now that someone else he loves has died. Then there’s probably the more normal side of the fandom who just thinks these are two grieving guys who don’t know how to act and are lashing out and that it really isn’t as deep as people think. The people who think Eddie is an abuser are the same people who thought Chimney was the worst for punching Buck back in S5. I kinda wish they kept that energy whenever Buck pushed Eddie on purpose in S7E4 because he was jealous of him/Tommy. I think we just need to accept that these are flawed characters who make mistakes when grieving/upset and that we don’t need to baby any of them. Eddie’s apology not being words necessarily but flying Chris in the whole way from Texas just to cheer Buck up was so sweet. It just reiterates them being a family. This show has a pattern of characters bringing kids to Buck whenever he is upset (example when Buck was upset in season 3 about not being able to work, Eddie brought Chris to make him feel better and when Buck/Tommy broke up Maddie brought Jee to him. It’s a little funny. “Oh you’re upset? Here’s a kid” Fun fact 1: The scene where Eddie finds out on the phone was filmed and added in last minute due to complete fandom uproar/backlash from episode 14/15. Rightfully so. Eddie has been a main character since S2 and him and Bobby have helped each other through so much (Bobby helped Eddie when he had nobody to watch Chris back in s2 and with Shannon and his breakdown in S5. In return Eddie is one of the main reasons that Bobby decided to throw the alcohol he was going to have down the sink in the s5 finale. He saved him. I don’t think Eddie knows that). It was such a disrespect to Eddie and the actor to not have him be apart of that two parter. Not having Eddie in the montage where everyone finds out but having Tommy who’s been in like 6 episodes of the show was a spit in the face to Eddie fans all over. At some conventions and interviews lately Ryan Guzman has expressed his dissatisfaction with that. He was actually off work for a whole month because he wasn’t in those episodes and he didn’t even get to be there on Peter Krause’s (Bobby) final day. Fun fact 2: Someone in another comment shared a fact that wasn’t true so sharing the real version. Originally the kitchen fight scene was going to be more placid and chill but Ryan wanted it to be a little more intense because of how they were grieving. The director was like “you want to hit the guy right?” but Ryan said no. It was all improvised on the day. Oliver actually didn’t know Ryan was gonna put his hand on his shoulder like that til it happened but said that they’ve worked together long enough that they trust each other. Oliver said in a M&G at a convention that he loved filming the scene. This director was a first time director for the show and old friend of the show runner so wasn’t a 100% on their character traits which was why he suggested about Eddie “hitting Buck. Ryan knows his character too much and knows he wouldn’t.

Amber Rehrer

I didn’t say it was an act of horror or severe violence. Just that it was inappropriate in the moment, as two people in a professional work environment. Whether Oliver was ok with it after the fact doesn’t negate that it happened. We can agree on that right? And as for season 7, absolutely Buck was in the wrong. He was a jealous asshole. And he should have handled it better. One hundred percent. There was no excuse. And I have and will hold him accountable for that instance. But the lack of remorse on Eddie’s part vs the remorse on Buck’s part are different. And THAT is my issue. The words “I heard someone was being a dick to you” is not an apology. Bringing Chris to smooth things over is also not an apology. But we can agree to disagree on that front. Grieving or not, some things you can’t take back. When you say things the way Eddie says things, there are consequences. And if he was my friend? Our friendship would be over. I don’t let people talk to me the way he talks to Buck. And he gets away with it because Buck would never ever think to stand up for himself. He thinks he’s the problem always. That is a part of his character, and Eddie KNOWS that. Which is what makes this worse. Both characters are flawed, and no one is denying that. But only one character continually brings up the other’s flaws and uses it against them over and over again. Buck has helped Eddie with everything and I don’t see as much of that being returned, especially as I rewatch the show. I say this as someone who did ship Buddie all throughout the show. Through Bucktommy as well. But I don’t like Eddie’s anger. I don’t like the fact that he doesn’t get help for that, barring a couple of therapy sessions he was basically forced into earlier in the show. I chalk a lot of it up to bad writing, but it doesn’t change my feelings towards the issue.

buddiefan911

The act is still the same whether you think Buck had remorse or not. You can’t excuse one because Buck seemed to have remorse while Eddie “didn’t”. Buck never even apologised either or even checked in on Eddie. It was actually Tommy who had to reassure Buck that Eddie wasn’t mad. Eddie clearly had remorse since he flew his son in the WHOLE way from Texas. Were you soured on Chimney too when he punched Buck? Why are we acting here like Eddie’s this huge angry guy when it was only seen during fight club era, whenever he had is mental breakdown and during this episode. All the characters have gotten angry multiple times during the show and have done things. Is Eddie the only one not allowed to act out? Eddie has gotten therapy. But it is okay so slip up time to time. Just because you get therapy doesn’t automatically mean you are 100% healed. You’re implying like Eddie and Buck fight all the time and that Eddie throws Buck EVERY flaw in his face even though it’s only happened 3 times in the whole show and because Buck keeps repeating the same patterns. 1. During the lawsuit (Surprisingly I was actually on Buck’s side mostly) he was only thinking of himself and not how it would affect the rest of their team/buddie’s relationship/Buck’s relationship with Chris. 2. Buck sabotaging Eddie’s house viewings while Eddie was attempting to reunite with his son. 3. The kitchen. Buck was upset about the fact that Eddie was keeping a secret from him. While I get why Buck is doing all these things, Eddie still has a right to call him out. It’s not throwing things in his face. You’re saying if you did shit like that, that you wouldn’t expect your friend to call you out. I do agree Eddie could have handled the situation better which I have said in my Question time comment. It also doesn’t mean I’m going to hate him or not have any nuanced thoughts about the whole thing. To say that Eddie doesn’t help Buck is such an insult to their relationship and dynamic. Eddie has always been real with Buck and doesn’t treat him with kid gloves, Buck appreciates that, which is why they’re so close. Eddie helped Buck get out of his funk because he knew Christopher would cheer him up back in S3. He told Buck he was allowed to feel the way he did during the whole Daniel thing. He was real with him in S5 during the Maddie/Chimney dilemma. He was also the only person that Buck felt himself around post lightning strike and Eddie supported Buck then. Eddie gave put him as his son’s legal guardian. While that may be just a thing you can say is selfish or “whatever”, it’s because Eddie legit loves and trusts Buck more anyone than anyone in the world (other than his son). They also said it’s the first time Buck felt “needed”. Him telling Buck that he wasn’t expendable. There’s more recently but can’t discuss because I don’t want to post spoilers. It only seems like Eddie gets more help is because he needs more with Chris and Buck is happy to be there for them. You came into this question time with a clear agenda just to hate on Eddie and the question was only put in as an after thought. There was clearly no nuance here.

Amber Rehrer

I stated in the beginning that I knew I was the minority in the way I feel. I don’t hate Eddie. I said his actions soured me to his character. I do chalk a lot of that up to the writing, as I also stated. I am allowed to dislike elements of a character just like you are. I don’t particularly like that Chim punched Buck. I think it was a horrible thing to do. I think that showing violence at all towards another human being is wrong. And Chim knowing Maddie’s background with Doug makes me wonder why he would think it’s ok in any instance to hit another person. It did sour me to his character, actually. There is no excuse to ever hit someone no matter how upset they make you. Hence my problem with Eddie’s anger. It IS his first instinct to get angry. That is a character trait. I don’t think he’s an out of control person or an abuser, but I simply point out that he honestly hasn’t done much to change that about himself. Again, shoutout to bad writing. Part of question time is not only the questions but also explaining why you feel that way you do and having Harry discuss his pov. I don’t think people who have a different opinion of this scene are inherently wrong. You are the one making it personal. I don’t need to have nuance, I was asking his honest thoughts on what I had to say. That’s the point of tv. People will resonate with different things. I am really always open to discussing and if someone could change my thoughts on it I welcome it. I didn’t have an agenda. I am honestly sharing my feelings on something. I also never brought up the will or Said it was selfish? I know that Eddie loves Buck. Like I said I shipped them this entire time. But their communication is not doing it for me this season. And again, I am allowed to feel that way. This is turning into a fight, and I don’t know why it’s being made to seem like I’m just trying to be combative. I’m not. I’m stating my opinion same as you. You just think that yours is correct and are upset like I’m intentionally trying to disagree. And you bring up some very valid points, but I just look at it from a different perspective I guess.

buddiefan911

Maybe I feel a little defensive because of how Eddie’s treated by the writers and some fans of the show who are being xenophobic and trying to paint Eddie as the angry Latino guy (not saying that’s what you’re doing). So maybe I am projecting a little so sorry lol. I don’t wanna fight I just get a little defensive, especially coz I feel like this fandom goes way too hard for Buck sometimes and not enough for Eddie

Amber Rehrer

Oh there’s no question that Buck has a lot of supporters. He is my favorite and yeah I can be protective but I cannot let him get away with bad behaviors! He has done some very…. Questionable things? Haha. I can get it. Eddie hasn’t been getting very good plot lines for a while so if he’s your fave- I can see how my assessment would come off that way. So if it did, I’m sorry. I do chalk a lot of it up to the writing. Ryan and Oliver are lovely- I was lucky enough to meet them in Jersey! But yeah. We don’t see eye to eye on that scene, and that’s ok! I see where you are coming from. I just wish resolutions on Thai show were better thought out. They leave a lot of things between the lines so we have to guess at what our characters did offscreen and it can be a little annoying.

buddiefan911

EPISODE 16 What did you think of the choice not to have Eddie remotely involved with Bobby’s final moments, and then shoehorn him in the last 5 minutes of the episode? We know that Eddie was in Texas and at least this was a reason for him to come back (not a very fun reason though). It kinda sucked for the whole fandom because he’s been in the show since s2, and they’ve all been such a family (characters and actors) and it kinda felt like a kick in the face not to have him involved. BTW I’ll explain more about their decision to kill Bobby at the end of the season.

Daylet

Notes for Ep 15: Bobby’s death was a last-minute decision during contract negotiations, leaving it “open-ended” I think to call his bluff in case Peter changed his mind, but he didn’t. Angela Bassett was unaware of Bobby’s fate until filming, as it was initially meant for Ravi. This change required shifting storylines, excluding Eddie/Ryan from the emergency, and leaving Chris and Eddie’s discussions off-screen due to time constraints. Filmed scenes were scrapped, and the production was chaotic, with the cast unhappy about the decisions. Many struggled to believe Bobby was truly dead, as a result. The way they framed Bobby’s death of LA being his penance, I think, contradicted his character’s arc of seeking that second chance. While a main character’s removal from main was necessary to manage the show’s busyness, in my opinion, the execution left much to be desired. Peter Krause wrote a really beautiful letter to the fans and the people who work on the show if you ever want to look it up.

Rwatches

Episode 16 - what do you think they could have done differently with this episode? People really didn't like it because for obvious reasons, bobby died but some also felt like it was rushed at the end. It you're interested in what went down bts - I know other people have already explained what happened behind the scenes with Bobby's death, but basically the show has been dealing with budget cuts for a while and they're getting even more going into Season 10. The whole thing was kind of a mess from the start because they filmed Bobby's funeral in broad daylight in downtown LA. It was a huge setup, so people started posting videos on TikTok and pretty much everyone on Twitter who watched the show got spoiled 2-4 weeks before the episode even aired. Then on April Fools' Day, Oliver (Buck) and JLH (Maddie) posted fake script pages that made it look like Bobby was buried alive. Oliver recently confirmed the cast was told to post those because the death had already leaked to throw us off. So, people went into the episode expecting Bobby to be buried alive or for there to be some kind of twist in Episode 16, but that never happened, which just made fans even more frustrated. At first the showrunner said Bobby's death was a creative decision and that he and Peter had been discussing it for a while. Then later it came out that budget was at least part of the reason, and from what I remember he eventually admitted he regretted the decision. The way the cast found out was also pretty wild. Peter obviously knew first, but Angela wasn't told right away. The showrunner had her guess who wasn't going to make it, and she said she guessed herself first before eventually getting to Bobby. She's also said she found out through the script, so the timeline is a little confusing, but either way it's strange that one of the show's executive producers wasn't brought in sooner considering the impact it would have on her character too. Part of the reason they probably waited so long is because they were also tricking the cast. They had them filming fake versions of scenes and basically doing twice the work. There was even a version where Ravi died, and Angela said she filmed scenes for that before they finally revealed who was actually being killed off. Tracie (Karen) literally found out Bobby died while reading the script, thought it was a joke, and had to call Aisha (Hen) to confirm it was real because nobody had told her beforehand. If this really was mostly about budget, people naturally started looking at salaries. Angela makes the most (450k per ep), but she's also basically untouchable i would say when it comes to the show. Ryan Murphy created 9-1-1 for her after she left American Horror Story, she's an executive producer across all shows in the franchise, she's the only cast member who's been in every episode, and the showrunner has literally said he makes sure she's in every episode because he thinks it's bad luck if she's not. They even wrote around her schedule when she missed a month of filming for personal reasons. Realistically, they're not getting rid of Angela unless she decides she's done. That basically leaves Peter (300k per ep), and that's who they went with. The fallout has been messy ever since. The cast didn't seem happy at the time and honestly still don't seem completely over it. Kenny (chim) especially has been pretty open about how much it upset him at conventions. Ryan was upset that Eddie wasn't even included in Bobby's final episodes. Angela was out here bringing up fan theories about how Bobby could come back during interviews and on live tv, which a lot of people saw as her pushing back against the decision. And honestly, those episodes left so many plot holes that it almost felt like they were leaving themselves room to retcon it later if they needed to. Angela also ended up became the unofficial spokesperson for the whole situation. Everywhere she went people were asking if Bobby was coming back, including at airports, and the MET GALA, like seriously, MET GALA do you know how big that is? the decision made all this noise and reached the Met Gala. Even said her own sister was upset about it. But the person who got screwed the most was Peter because I don't even think it was done properly and unless he wanted to leave, they could have had him retire and be in less episodes. But He has his own show now coming out in the fall called "Line of Fire" on NBC, so you know what, good for him. So yeah, it was just a mess all around. Not only did fans feel like they got played, but it also feels like the cast got played too. And that's probably not even everything that happened, it's just what I can remember off the top of my head.
