9x04 Not a question but this episode was never supposed to exist, it was added in last minute because they had extra footage from the space arc so that’s why they did the Athena flashbacks which I thought were beautiful.

9x05 What do you think of them repeatedly highlighting Eddie’s troubled relationship with religion? I love the little hints and signs they always do with Eddie’s catholic guilt/repression. Do you see a deeper meaning behind it? Abigail being “locked away” and prevented from leaving in the name of religion presents some interesting parallels with Eddie, I believe. Fun fact (or not so) is that Ryan Guzman lost his grandmother a few weeks before this episode, so this hit home for him. He said he found it very cathartic to film though. Also what did you think of the Ravi/Buck friendship?

9x07 Here they go again hinting at Eddie’s aversion to women/dating women. Did you clock the way Eddie and Ravi looked at each other after Ravi asked Eddie “why he was so bad at this” in reference to picking up women. Did you find it interesting like me that when that husband and wife were looking for a third, the women looked at Ravi and the guy looked at Eddie? Eddie has no genuine excuse to use Chris as a buffer for dating now that Chris is practically 16.

Episode 4 The Space Arc was what it was - over the top, unrealistic in some areas, but this episode was definitely my favorite from it. The emotion, performances, and meaning behind everything was really well done. And seeing Pepi Sonuga back as young Athena made it even better. People were really upset about Athena saying she had nothing left on Earth and kept pointing out she has May and Harry. But I think they miss a bit of the nuance there but that was grief talking. When someone is grieving, it's hard for them to see the hands that are reaching out to them or the people who are in their lives. Grief is not black and white, it's very complicated. Fun facts: 1. Pepi had just gotten married and was on her honeymoon when she got the call for this episode. With her husband’s support, she left her honeymoon to come film because they love Angela. 2. Angela helped cast Pepi as young Athena back in S3 for Athena Begins, and she also cast Elijah as Harry in S7. Honestly, she couldn’t have picked better people for those roles. 3.Not so fun fact but If I'm not mistaken, Tim's dad either passed away a few days before the episode aired or maybe it was during the time he was writing the episode. Which is why we had "For dad" at the end. Questions: If Harry does becomes a firefighter, how do you think that changes the show dynamics? And how do you think Athena would take it, especially after losing Bobby to the job?

9x05 "Dia de Los Muertos" is actually a well-loved episode and was an episode that was submitted as one of the "For Your Consideration" submissions of "9-1-1" for an Emmy. It has been submitted for Outstanding Picture Editing. I find the episode so beautiful, and I love how the episode centered around Eddie and his experience with love and death, and how those experiences made him as the character that he is right now. I would love to hear your thoughts about the final words of Abuela to Eddie, about how he was finding love in the wrong place. Would you agree, from what you know so far about the show? I've always thought that he and Buck were similar that way, how both of them are seemingly always searching for something. Eddie's Catholic guilt has been brought up again in this episode and I really am looking forward to where this brings him.

9x07 Season 9 marks the second year that Eddie hasn't been dating anyone. This episode highlights Buck wanting to help him out on that aspect, but instead, picks himself up two people who wanted to date/hook up with him. I'm wondering if you were able to notice that the "9 o'clock direction" of Eddie that Buck said someone (the same lady Buck eventually slept with) was checking him out... If you go back to that scene specifically, Eddie's 9 o'clock is actually Buck. Do you think that was a mistake that they left in or some kind of, I don't know, hint at something? That stare from Eddie to shut Ravi up was something as well. Technically, Buck hasn't really been in a relationship at all since season 7 as well, and aside from the hook-up with the husband and wife this season, and the Tommy relapse in season 8, Buck has been single as well.

Episode 4 FUN FACT: Yes, that’s supposed to be Michael in the diner and the truck. This is also the same actress that played Athena in her begins episode and Rick is a younger version of the same detective Athena tends to work with. So, 9-1-1 is in a bit of a tough spot because seeing how they left things with Peter Krause (Bobby) they can’t really use him for any new scenes, they can only use old footage. Hence, going back in Athena’s history for poignant moments. I still think it works in this case, but something to keep in mind. 1. I will say this is what 9-1-1 does best. Even in the dark times, there’s hope. The line when she asks what was it all for? “For all the moments in between” I think is a beautiful message. 2. Thoughts on Harry’s career move? 3. Do you think Athena is in a better mental headspace after this trip? What about in relationship with Harry and May?

EPISODE 5 FUN FACT: 9-1-1 put out a casting call for people of Mexican descent who could come dressed in the correct make up and garb for Dia De Los Muertos. They even brought their own vehicles. Ryan said it was a sight to see so much celebration around his culture and he was thankful the 9-1-1 team took care to be respectful with the story they told. FUN FACT: between seasons 8 and 9, 9-1-1 changed the location of their studios so a lot of the sets had to be rebuilt. Eddie’s house for example, is bigger in general. Buck’s new house is an actual house just outside the studio because it was a house ABC bought (along with other houses in the area) for filming as well. FUN FACT: there was a rumor that abuelas actress wanted to retire from acting which is why they killed her off, but not sure how accurate that is. 1. I felt like this episode was intentionally drawing a contrast between religion and faith through both Buck and Eddie’s stories. What stood out to me was that Buck realizes home isn’t a house at the same time Eddie realizes faith isn’t a church. Did you see that parallel too? 2. On a similar note, I think this episode is also addressing identity (Eddie with his faith/culture, Buck with his new house/Bobby) Eddie is trying to reconcile that he doesn’t have to do things the way he was taught (going to mass, pray the rosary, etc.) in order to experience god/love/community. With both trying to answer the questions of “who am I?” and “what do I want?” 3. Do you think Harry is ready to go into this line of work? I love how the show gives us a glimpse into the sacrifice involved in being a first responder when it is so often idolized. Harry idolizes it, but it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. 4. I want to circle back to what Father Brian told Eddie in 8x06—that Eddie has a tendency to deny himself joy. A lot of people interpret that as Eddie repressing his queer identity because of Catholic guilt. While I think religion has absolutely shaped parts of Eddie’s life (like marrying Shannon or how he viewed Marisol), I don’t think his self-denial is rooted in religion as much as it is in his own trauma. To me, Eddie has spent so much of his life believing that when he follows his own wants, people get hurt or leave. This episode felt less like a rejection of faith and more like Eddie learning he can separate faith from guilt. What are your thoughts on the difference between faith and religion, and how Eddie’s perspective may have changed?

Episode 6 FUN FACT: The case Athena works on is based on a true story that Netflix did a documentary about called Unknown Number. FUN FACT: This season was essentially broken up into 4 pieces because of scheduling around the holidays and the Winter Olympics. This episode is technically the mid-season finale and next episode picks up 3 months later. FUN FACT: While filming this episode, Ryan had a birthday, so the cast a crew got a big huge cake and sang happy birthday to him on set. 1. What do you think about Harry leaning on Buck for his training? His fear of crossing Athena is kind of funny! Are you surprised Bucks backyard is essentially a gym haha…Just some background, in order to be accepted into the academy for firefighting you have to finish a fitness exam (CPAT) and be interviewed—the show got that accurately. 2. The ending to this episode with Hen definitely left me at the edge of my seat. Any idea on what could be wrong with her? Do you think she’s right in withholding the information of her fall from Karen and anyone else? The cliche comes from somewhere at least, “healthcare workers make the worst patients” 3. May has grown so much over the years. I really appreciated the conversation Athena and her have. Glad May feels more confident in standing up to Athena when she wants to minimize the impact of an event. What are your thoughts? 4. Do you think there’s a future where Buck becomes a Fire Academy instructor?

Episode 7 FUN FACT: the actors playing Jade and Zane (he was in S4 of Glee) are actually married in real life. I find it interesting that the episode Eddie dances in his underwear to find joy was called Confession and this episode with a chastity belt and Eddie refusing to date is called Secrets. 1. The show doesn’t go out of its way to explicitly state Buck is bisexual but it’s pretty much solidified in this episode. Not only with him having sex with more than one gender, but also the lights in the club cycle through the colors on the bisexual flag: blue, purple, pink. The show uses lighting a lot to highlight certain things (not just this). How do you feel about this approach in labeling/not labeling Buck’s sexuality? Do you think or want it to be explicitly stated? 2. Did you catch the symbolism of Buck helping Eddie deliver the baby and cutting the chord? Maybe something to do with Chris or fatherhood in general? I tend to not be one to lead a horse to water when it comes to Buddie (some things are undeniable but I like to see what the general audience picks up without having to point it out first). This call in particular could be reminiscent to Buck stepping in with both feet with Eddie in helping with Christopher the way the guy on this date did. 3. When it comes to Hen’s actions, I am biased by profession to side with Chim. I think he acted correctly. Hen could’ve been a huge liability out on the field. Yeah you’re surrounded by medical professionals, but it won’t be any help if you also become the patient. She wouldn’t’ve been fired if she would’ve disclosed her symptoms to Chim. What do you think of the fight between Chim and Hen? Do you think Chim is right in thinking Hen would’ve behaved differently with Bobby? 4. Hey look they invited Ravi out! I know you mentioned last episode that you don’t like how he is sometimes a last thought, and although true to an extent, up until this point Ravi was also more than willing to mot involve himself in all the extracurricular craziness the firefam tend to get into. 5. What do you think about how the “Get Eddie A Date” plan developed. Great intentions, I guess (although the whole chastity belt convo in the locker room had me going ‘guys what are we doing here?!’), but Eddie was also not into the idea at all and did not want to approach anyone. To me, he didn’t look particularly surprised or bothered that Buck was just being Buck. What was your take? 6. Do you think Eddie knows that Buck slept with Tommy again in Eddie’s house and the resulting conversation the morning after? At the club, Buck is saying he’s single by choice, and Ravi saying, “Yeah, Tommy’s choice” and Eddie chuckles. WE know that’s not true, Tommy wanted to get back together and Buck said no. Eddie in that green tank top when he’s working out at the gym is my phone background. He looked so good!
