Well, with that, we officially have the end of Gideons journey. Kind of crazy to think of the dynamics of the team without him, but I am excited to see the vibes of S3 going forward!

So, I believe Mandy Patkin left because Criminal Minds became so big, and that was something he wasn't comfortable with, the fan base was huge and I think in the early seasons it was almost cult level, think Glee fans but for crime. For me, this is where Criminal Minds really takes off, the cast find their groove, the pacing of the last two episodes, for me, mostly holds up, and they just get darker and more intense from here on out. This isn't the last of Strauss unfortunately. I'm really excited for you to see where these goes. Also, this is one of the few episodes that will have some relevance in much later seasons!

Just to defend Haley a bit more, Hotch indeed was originally a prosecutor. Then he worked as an agent in the Seattle field office when he first joined the FBI for 2 years. Then he joined the BAU. So in her defense, he has changed jobs several times and like you said, they made the decision together to have a child which means he must have at least implied that he was committed to building a "family life" with her. And now remember what he said to Elle in season 1 when she asked him how he balances the BAU and his family and how to not turn out like Agent Ryan (no family, no friends, retired but unable to move on): "when I'm with them, I try to focus a hundred percent of my attention there. And when I'm with you guys, I try to do the same thing" But as we have seen he hasn't really fulfilled on that commitment especially in comparison to his commitment to the job. From my perspective, it seems less like she's bothered by him being generally absent b/c of the work--because yeah as you said at some point she must have agreed to the dynamic of him working in BAU-- but instead bothered by how much he goes above and beyond, sacrificing himself for the job. On top of being away from home all the time b/c of the travel, he constantly works late when he doesn't techincally have to, even if he goes home, he brings work with him, when they're supposed to be on vacation or have days off if he gets a call he rushes back, he makes decisions that are detrimental to his name and career to protect the team. Then when it comes down to it they (not the team to be fair the Bureau) suspend him and without pay at that. Now yes, they're high school sweethearts so at some point she surely had a pulse on his workaholic tendencies but the meeting of those tendencies and his passion for the team and what they do brought it to an extreme neither of them could've imagined. All of which is to say, I agree with you that they're both valid and this is the only logical outcome. Sorry for the wall 🙇🏽‍♀️🙇🏽‍♀️ Thank you for the reactions, super excited b/c one of my favorite episodes is coming up !

Also, he and Haley met in high school. It's inevitable that they're going to change a lot from who they were then. Even in S1, he was so eager to have two weeks off to spend at home. Now, he has two weeks off (Yes, a suspension is a different context but still) and he's miserable. They've just grown into very different people with different goals.

Mandy Patinkin left for some of the reasons that his character left. He said he didn't realize when he signed on to the show that they would be dealing with these horrible, dark things in every episode. It was damaging him on an emotional and psychological level and he felt that he needed to leave for his mental health. He said the show is amazing and had nothing bad to say about anyone working on it, just that emotionally, he couldn't keep doing it. Also, you know where he started? Think "My name is Inigo Montoya"

Haley married a lawyer, a prosecutor.... not an FBI agent. And, she is doing ALL the work with their son. So, I can understand she is worried about Jack growing up hardly knowing his father. But, I'm sure that she and Hotch talked about this before he joined the FBI and she agreed to that career move. But, she probably didn't understand ahead of time about all the travel and all the awful things that he would see. Or how it might change him as a person and what he might bring home emotionally.

My heart genuinely breaks for both Hotch and Haley and I can understand where both of them are coming from. Hotch, i feel like the work changed him. As people in comments have said he started out as a prosecutor and had different jobs so as much as the personality trait of being a hard-worker stayed the same, being in BAU could definitely be a trigger of change. One thing is being a prosecutor, another thing is being in the field and catching people who are cruel and horrendous. Yes, there are similarities but still different, so i'm not surprised the BAU work had changed him and became a massive load to shoulder. When you think about it, it's also the type of job your heart doesn't let you turn your back on even for a second, especially if you're someone like Hotch, who's big on justice being served. On the other hand, i get Haley, of course because of the family dynamics but also because of the natural feeling that those situations bring. She was probably used to Hotch being a little safer, actually being around much more and not a lot of people deal with change well, especially when you wanna build a life with a person. I can imagine she's scared most of the times because he's always in the field, in the center of all crime, never knowing how Hotch is gonna be, and also (and i'm gonna give an educated guess cause i'm not a mum or a wife), maybe becoming a mum has intensified and magnified her feelings towards what he does cause now she doesn't just care about Hotch's safety but also about her son having his father around more and especially safe and sound. overall a very hard situation. I know those two love each other very much, they almost just started building a bigger family, but sometimes life happens..

I agree, I think season 3 is where the show becomes so amazing!
