What Type Are You? (Patreon)

this one's a shout-out for some of the folks that have been around the site for a few years. 

i've pretty much always been a sucker for those dinky online quizzes of any variety... things like "what is your animal familiar" and "which sailor scout are you"-- i spent a frankly embarrassing amount of time on quizilla and its forums as a teenager. so. when i realized in 2012 (about a month before i started making the game) that i had an entire website i could just put my own quiz on, i jumped on it. i remember writing most of it during my music theory class at uni, and although the code for it no longer works and looks like garbage to me because i haven't touched php in years, i had a lot of fun with it

unfortunately, when we updated our site and replaced our custom-written main site with the forum-integration alongside E16's release, i wasn't able to keep the quiz functional. still had the code (and the same is true for our other things, like the trainer card generator)... while it is theoretically possible to get it to work on the new site, it would be an Ordeal, and i didn't want to commit the time to fixing and maintaing all that as opposed to making the actual game.

anyway, true to the site's pokemon theme, it was a What Type Are You quiz. there's actually a reference to it in game already, in the trainers on route 1, Elliot and Brian. also, if i may say so myself? it was one of the best ones out there solely because you could actually get every single type and combination, mono and duo (as opposed to user created quizzes via quizilla or whatever, you only had a limited number of potential results). it was pretty long as a result.... but like, #worth, and it seems like a lot of people enjoyed it at the time. 

at the very least, some people did because i've had the odd person come into my email every now and then asking "hey is that type quiz still accessible"? that happened again the other day, and as usual i had to be like "no im sorry we had to upgrade the site and i haven't taken the time to make it functional again because i've been so focused on making the video game that-- waitamoment."
and then, after five years of lying dormant, the brain cells in my headcavity slowly began to reactivate

what if...
instead of taking the time to decipher all my old code and figure out how the hell php works inside our forum software...
i just put the quiz in the goddamn video game that i'm already used to working in and clearly has the tools to do so?

so anyway, i did that the other day. it was a distraction from quests, but it only took one day, and i'm excited to be able to bring it back in some form at least. a lot more people will be able to enjoy it this way too! it's pretty much exactly the same quiz, just with shorter answers to fit in game, and also we updated it for fairy type, since the previous iteration existed before fairy type did.

you can just take the quiz for fun whenever. it's in perdot ward and is accessible without fighting a single trainer (besides cain and victoria), so maybe some people will enjoy using it to assign themselves mono/duo type runs too~

and now for something completely different. the folks are still working hard on finishing the last few animations (mostly z-moves by now..), and our animator, vulpes, submitted a WIP for Stoked Sparksurfer the other day. we were talking about how we might have to make a separate version when used by the opponent (but we don't!! nice!!), so i gave it a test as is. 

now, what you have to understand, is that we always have an opposing pokemon graphic to test animations against. however, for some reason Robin made our opposing test graphic this:

that is None Fern With Left Leg. 

when we were updating fern's sprite we made big memes about the fact that in fern's original sprite, he is literally ass-backwards. and riffing on that led to "why not just rotate his legs 90 degrees and call it a day?"

i don't know why robin made it our opposing graphic, but it's also been their avatar and name in the dev server ever since.

so anyway, Stoked Sparksurfer. I'm now going to post the animation as I saw it when testing. This is unfinished and looks a little wrong on the bolt because it is being mirrored on the side of the screen it wasn't made for...
