Today's post comes again from hewaje! We first showed Yvonne's art on the twitch stream a couple weeks ago, so today they'll be talking you through the process of drawing and designing her~

Take it away!

Concept

“Tall for her age, cute. Father has glittering beard”

These were pretty much the physical clues I got for the character. There was no concept art to lean on either, but I enjoy these type of prompts since I can pretty much go with what I have in mind. My first concept came out like this when I was thinking of tall, glittering, and cute. I was trying to think of universally cute themes and could only come up with flowers and bows.

I think she has enough flower on her! Gave her flower pupils and added some flower on her head and dress. Also made her dress look vaguely like an upside down flower bud. But then I forgot that Heaven was frigid! So I added sleeves. Not sure why I felt like she’s saluting here lol.

Here’s another variation with different hair too. Pigtails are cute right? Unless… I’ve been living under a rock this whole time.

Short hair can be cute too… but to each their own!

Ultimately the team settled with long hair and no sleeves. Her arms won’t be cold since she’ll be wearing heated bracelets. These things do exist in real life and they don’t work that well. ;D
Don’t get scammed!

But I was still not happy with the overall theme. She kinda reminds me of an older lady due to the muted colors. I put this off a few days and was able to come up with the following color scheme.

I think she looks more youthful here and fits close to what I envisioned for her.

I also tried this one but she looked too close to the other angels colors saved except for the hair.

I think it also gave the wrong vibe as well. Sort of gives a futuristic look.

Anyway onto the next step since I was happy with the colors and got the A-ok from the team.

Message Art

1. Sketch

The pose was changed to be more consistent with the other message art. Her right arm was lowered. Her dress and hair aren’t doing any gravity defying magic either. I’ve also changed her frills since I find them difficult to translate to lines.

2. Base

I lied, the frills can work if I stick to the concept art. They remained black and are part of the lineart! Nothing too interesting here besides flat colors.

3. Shade

I tried to shade closely to the game’s art style…

4. Detail

…but I still failed so Ame helped finalized it! c:

5. Expressions

I kept her mouth and eyes separate so these are just samples of the expressions she can make. There’s 16 different combinations!
(ame-editor's note: actually since we reworked how we handle message arts recently, there's a lot more than that now! more on that in a future post)

Also I’ve learned the Falcon way. I’ll continue the trend by showing all expressions in one picture

I think she sort of look like a drag queen here. Yikes!

Overall I really enjoyed the process in creating her since there was not much to go off on. I would say the challenges I’ve encountered were coloring the art similarly to the game’s art style and settling on a color scheme. I can envision her but when her initial color went on the actual canvas she looked so old! That was the reason I binned her for a few days and went back to work on her when I had the idea.

I hope you guys look forward to her when the game is out!

(Smeargle kindly pointed out the cow lick was called an ahoge since I kept kept calling it hair antennae. You learn something new everyday.)

As a reminder, we'll be streaming more Reborn tomorrow at 5p EST-- about 11 hours from the time of posting this. Come hang out! We're up to Shelly next!

I'm thinking we'll also have some kind of discord-hangout-dev stream sometime in the next week! Maybe monday? I'm not going to schedule that one, I'll just camp out and we can chat.

Take care~
