I didn't sleep very well last night.
I was way too excited.
I kept thinking about things I could/wanted to do on all of my games.
It took me like an hour at four in the morning to fall asleep thinking of it, and it took me another hour to get back to sleep after my cat woke me up again.

Yesterday I was probably tinkering with java for a solid nine hours straight,
but it's working.
I finished the core of Starlight's combat system-- something I had expected to be one of the hardest challenges I'd face.
I also made it go backwards-- important.
I killed it.

I was originally going to make the combat system myself but use a tactical plug in for the battle system (remember, these are two different things for starlight).
But I think I'll just make the battle system myself too.
Just because I fucking can.

I really love this.

Last night, I also kept thinking about the past.
It's been almost eight years since I actually developed a battle system from scratch like this.
I've missed it.
Incidentally  back then, that last battle system I made, was also for Starlight (and was in fact the battle system and not the combat system, which wasn't part of the plan back then).
I first started working on Starlight when I was sixteen, tabled the idea, and eventually came back to it and made some huge changes.
Worth.
But back then I was making it in RM2k3-- older version of what I use now.
Here's the thing about 2k3-- it doesn't have a script editor. Everything is done through event commands. It's stupid limited.
XP added a script editor but there are some things you can't change.
New RPG Maker lets you change everything
Compared to doing this in 2k3 events this is actually so easy
That's why I know I can do it myself.

This post is coming off as way more pretentious than I intended it to be but it's just how my thoughts are right now, so here, please enjoy one (1) vintage meme  in this brief intermission.

I was also thinking about the cool early summer air and the lilac bush outside my window.
Wait, this isn't helping the 'pretentious' thing...
But hear me out.
When I was a kid, like every kid, I couldn't wait until summer break.
I wanted to be free.
But every summer break that I spent just playing tons of video games, and hanging out with friends, I was crushed by this lingering melancholy depression.
Like I was just wasting the time.
I was keenly aware of the pattern by fifth grade.
I first found Game Maker (and RPG Maker a little bit later) when I was 10. I put a lot of time into it right off the bat.
Once I started doing that, I didn't feel that depression anymore.
Making games has always made the days worth it for me.
At first this lilac scent was just the harbinger of another summer I'd waste.
Now it just reminds me of how excited I was to be able to make games.

And now, how excited I still am.

Thank you all for bringing me this far. <3

I also, last night, thought of how I would write this this morning.
And I thought of a really good title for the post too.
I just needed to remember it.
You can see how well that worked out.

i'll show you guys what the battle system looks like later this week.

well written q~q it's impressive that you've been keeping the idea up for so many years already and didn't just drop it at some point. so much passion for it! I'm sure we'll (of course including yourself, first and foremost) be bringing you even further! Aaand depending on your imagined title: ruined/saved
