Suicide squad of 3 man, Baspalov, Baranov and Ananenko, survived by fucking miracle gifted genetics it seems. Bespalov and Ananenko are still alive (from what we know) and Baranov died in 05' They have been awarded in 2019 Heroes of Ukraine award. Highest possible reward. Baranov died from heart attack so it was given to his family. Hope this story helps in this VERY dark depressing episode

he was not exaggerating when he said you'd be wishing for the bullet if they went over the site in the heli... dying from an extreme dose radiation is one of the worst possible fates and its so shocking seeing what it does to you, this episode was so heartbreaking

Radiation itself doesn’t spread from person to person. Once Vasily was decontaminated, touching him wouldn’t have exposed Lyudmila or the baby to radiation. The show is kind of misleading because it makes it seem like touching him was dangerous, which is especially unfortunate since the real Lyudmila Ignatenko said she faced harassment from people and reporters after the show aired.

As someone who studied medicine, the impacts of Chernobyl were an absolute tragedy to read about when I was in school. The folks on the frontline suffered acute radiation sickness, there was a massive spike in pediatric thyroid cancer caused by the radioactive Iodine-131, not to mention all of the other impacts the radiation had on the near by populace (psychological trauma, displacement, etc.). In a sense, it reminded me of Thalidomide; Thalidomide leading to a lot of severe birth defects led to much stricter monitoring during drug development, while Chernobyl led to a global overhaul in nuclear safety / governance. Sad that we sometimes only take these types of things seriously in the face of tragedy

I wouldn't say it's misleading. I would say it's representing the lack of information people had at the time. All the hospitals knew was that there were people who had radiation poisoning and probable assumed that just coming into contact would affect you

I get what you mean, but they still could’ve clarified it at the end. The show seems to have contributed to people blaming and harassing Lyudmila. It really sucks that she had to go through that after everything, when some of that misunderstanding could’ve been avoided if the show had been clearer about the actual radiation risk.
