It's been a long December...

It's January 8th, but the new year is just beginning - and what better way to start than with a story about reconnection and second chances?

This snapshot, as has become unfortunately usual, ballooned a bit. What was supposed to be a quick 5,000-word story became 11,000 words with 14 images. I have a problem. I know this. I'm working on it. (That's my New Year's resolution: stick to my goals!)

But I'm happy with how this one turned out. Cameron and Danielle's story felt important to tell with care - the awkwardness of reconnecting after fifteen years, the weight of who you used to be versus who you've become, and the strange comfort of someone who knew you before.

I wanted to do it justice.

I hope you love it as much as I loved writing it. Here's to new beginnings - and old friendships that refuse to stay in the past. 💕

P.S. As usual, the PDF has the best quality!

P.P.S. Found some typos! Re-uploaded.

Jesus Christ babe This is fucking fantastic

Jade Diaz

Any “straight cis” man who is aware enough to care about “his” sister’s heels and their attractiveness is super sus. So that was my first little clue what was in store for this encounter with Danielle.

Many a cold winter's night. Beautiful work, Emory

What an absolute joy for your first solo foray of the new year, Emory, and as with other examples of the format, it demonstrates your marvellous literary skills to the full in a way that the purely render form doesn’t allow. There’s some beautiful writing here. And I loved the twist too. Brilliantly done. The other thing about the prose heavy format and the art style that you use, as in this story and in Taylor, is that there’s a real story book quality to it. I can’t describe it better than that, but it fits the narrative style perfectly. Really enjoyed it. xxx

Kris Greg

Beautiful story. Thanks for sharing it with us.

I needed that. It was so sweet and romantic and beautiful. The final picture of Claire and Danielle kissing made me well up a little bit. It feels almost like a sister piece to The Guest and not just because of the beautiful line drawings you drew for the title pages. (Seriously, you should consider illustrating something using that style.) They both had the return to the small-town home trauma, self-discovery and joy of finally being yourself. The celebrational nature of the two stories helped tie them together. I can see The Guest being about Danielle's first time home after her transition. (Also typo: Page 3 - second page of the story - '... Why don't you ever *where* a coat...")

What a beautiful true to life love story Emory. I am amazed at your writing skills and how quickly I became invested in Cameron and his, her story. I loved the way you slowly built this story. Initially identifying Cameron as this lost soul and emotional walls he put up in his life, and revealing the deep underlying void he felt within. As a character he reminded of the protagonist in Alfred Camus book, ‘The Outsider’ - ‘alive but not living, a person drifting but not truly connected with life.’ When Danielle was initially introduced I assumed the story was going to focus on Cameron’s acceptance of his old friend Daniel. I loved the gentle slow reveal of the story being more about Cameron’s self acceptance of his, her true self. Wow! We all need a person like Danielle in our lives. Thank you Emory for your sharing with true to life accuracy, sensitivity and with such depth of understanding Cameron/ Claire’s story. Unpacking the myriad of emotions thoughts, feelings that she struggled with, fought against, suppressed and denied associated with her gender dysphoria. I’m so pleased you also continued the story to two years later. Allowing us to see Claire blossoming, with Danielle’s support, to have the courage to become and embrace her true self. With Danielle, now her partner at her side it was also so nice to witness their ongoing love. It also became apparent how Danielle is there for Claire, defending her, and supporting her against patronising behaviours of others she may come up against. I loved the dynamics and their strength and of their love as this ‘power couple’ that will enable them to navigate any ongoing challenges they may encounter in life.

Beautiful story.

Stop making me cry!!! Lovely artwork and meaningful and incredibly touching story . Thank you xx

Robertlouis

Oh, Gemma, that reference to L’Etranger was so apposite! I also love the fact that two years on things are not entirely plain sailing for the couple in terms of the responses in the community. That note of realism keeps the story grounded.

Jerome B

Yet another amazing story and phenomenal artwork. As ever, I am in awe of your talent!

Shannon

Emory, I really love when you do the positive growth and deep feelings stories like this, "The Guest" and "Taylor Made" (which is my absolute fav story you've done to date <3). You're so good at evoking and pulling out those strong emotions, it's truly a joy to read!

Kris Greg

It's both a love story & a story of self discovery. I've always liked love stories, & self discovery is typically needed ina good love story.

Gemma

Thank you. Pleased you also saw some parallels with the reference I made.

Sam May

Absolutely phenomenal. Such a wonderfully written story that conveys so much emotion. Made me emotional.

SingularCurve

Another great little story! It is so good to see high school sweethearts hook up, especially since they are both themselves now!

Roz Milner

I loved this! Great stuff

TheVampire

I do like the novel like stories but also miss the shorter caption like stories 😊

Omagathief

This story is just beautiful and raw Emory

Ella Cherry

Well… I couldn’t read it all in one go. The tears made it a little hard, honestly. It hit too close to home. I know that feeling all too well, walking around suffocated inside an armor that, these days, traps me far more than it protects me. An excellent story, Emory, so beautifully told. Thank you.

Maggie Heels

Finally I had a time to read it... and OMG it was AMAZING ❣️❣️❣️🥹🥹🥹

Thank you, Alyson! Channeling a little bit of that raw, honest energy. Felt good. ❤️

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you!! Sometimes you just have to write the happy ending you want to see in the world. Really glad you loved it.

Emory Ahlberg

Haha, you caught me! 😉 I dropped a few breadcrumbs early on... the heels, the awareness of makeup, the specific kind of envy/discomfort around drag. Claire was telling on herself long before she knew it.

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Jenny. There's something about the cold and the dark of winter that makes the warmth of connection feel so much more earned, isn't there? Glad you enjoyed it.

Emory Ahlberg

Wow, thank you, Robert! I've been really enjoying stretching these "literary muscles" lately. There's a level of internal monologue and nuance in prose that's hard to capture in just visuals. 💕

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Kris! I really believe you can't have one without the other - you have to know who you are before you can really let someone else love you properly. Cam/Claire had a lot of layers to peel back before she could get to the "love" part, but I'm glad she got there.

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you so much, Ellen! I definitely see the connection to The Guest... there's something about returning to those small-town roots that really brings out the vulnerability in a character. I wanted to capture that specific tension of "going home" while hiding a huge part of yourself, and then the release of finally being seen. (And good catch on the typo! ❤️)

Emory Ahlberg

I hear you! Don't worry, the shorter captions aren't going anywhere—I still love the punchiness of that format. I'm just trying to balance the menu a bit. 😊

Emory Ahlberg

Thanks, Roz! Really glad you enjoyed it. Writing it tapped into some stuff! 💕

Emory Ahlberg

Yes! That was the heart of it - the "them" that existed in high school were incomplete drafts. Now they can truly be together. 😊

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Sam. If it made you feel something real, then I did my job. That's the best compliment I can receive. 🥰

Emory Ahlberg

This makes me so happy to hear, Shannon! Taylor Made holds a very special place in my heart. Obviously, I like my darker stories... but even they need light to feel "real" and worthwhile. And I really enjoy exploring these deeper, emotional arcs, too. Thank you for reading and for commenting! 💕

Emory Ahlberg

💕💕💕 You are too kind, Jerome! Thank you for sticking with me as I experiment with new formats. And I'm so glad you enjoyed it!

Emory Ahlberg

I'm sorry! (But also, I'll take those tears as a compliment!) I wanted this one to hit the heart. A lot of what Claire was feeling, I have felt. Thank you so much. 💖

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you so much, Blaidd. 💕 Definitely poured some of the old me into Cameron.

Emory Ahlberg

Gemma, once again, you blow me away with your insight. You nailed the pacing... I wanted the reveal of Cameron's internal truth to be a slow burn because that's often how it feels in real life for many people. It's not an explosion, but a quiet realization in the mirror. And that feeling of being "alive but not living" is exactly the "hollowness" I was trying to capture in the early scenes. I'm so glad the ending with Danielle worked... We all need (or hope to have) that person who sees us before we see ourselves. 💖

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Nolwenn! Whenever you get the chance to dive in, I hope you enjoy the rest of it. ❤️

Emory Ahlberg

Yay! So glad you finally got a moment to sit with it, Maggie. Thank you for the love! 💖💖💖

Emory Ahlberg

Oh, Ella. I'm sending you the biggest hug. That feeling of the armor becoming a cage is... yeah. It's real. I hope you find moments where you can take the armor off, even just for a little while. ❤️

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you so much, Omaga. "Raw" was definitely the goal... didn't want to sugarcoat the messy parts of finding yourself. It isn't always pretty... but it's always worthwhile. Really appreciate you reading. 💕

Shannon

It just shows you've got range as a creator!

Soupy Dog

Loved it. Soft and tender. Felt fuzzy afterwards

Ella Cherry

Thank you so much, Emory! And yes, I’m really trying to find more of those moments.

Firewalker

Ugh I loved this so much 😭 Your prose is impeccable, just genuinely some of the most well written exploration of someone going through the process of tearing down their walls. I love them together so much, I love this story, it's just amazing 10/10 perfect new years story

stacy C

HNY Em.....lovely way to start it off....thanks x

SteveP

Perfect.

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you very much, Stacy. So happy you enjoyed it!

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you so much! ♥️ And wow, what a compliment! I poured a lot of myself into her feelings, so I’m glad that came through. It was a painful process but sooo worth it!

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Soupy. ♥️ With how harsh the world can be nowadays, sometimes soft and tender is just what we need.
