I'm incredibly excited to share something new with you today!

Liberation is a medieval fantasy collaboration between myself and the amazing Zoe Storm. Zoe is writing the story, and I'm creating the art - and I've been looking forward to this for such a long time!

Prince Hans and Queen Heloisa have escaped their kingdom after the king's murder and found refuge at Castle Salgen, under the protection of the Archduke. Or have they?

This story is set in a medieval world similar (but not quite) to our own, and it explores themes of power, identity, and survival in a time of revolution.

I'm truly privileged to be working with Zoe on this project. Her writing is sharp, emotional, and compelling, and I can't wait for you to experience where this story goes.

Like always, you can read it in your preferred format. Either with the image panels above, or you can download...

Here we go! ❤️

Willow Simmons

Awesome! I think this is my favorite genre.

Great start to what promises to be a fun collaboration. Zoe already has me guessing what might be causing Hans' discomfort and where that might lead, but it's far too early in the story to speculate with much accuracy. And the artistic approach Emory chose to illustrate this story is not only beautiful, but also so very appropriate for this tale of kings and queens and princes (and princesses?).

Oooh. Intriguing opening. I'm excited to see where this is going to go. Mind you, being a staunch anti-royalist (I was going to say 'republican' but that word is slightly tainted), I'm less than favourable towards any royal family but the citizens seem to be doing a pretty good impression of 'La Terreur' so I'm not exactly on their side here either.

I feel very confident that Prince Hans will absolutely be safe with the Archduke and that nothing Gender could ever happen to him!

Ricevolution... Cut the pasta head... Go to the Bolognese *Wouhou, Liberté! HANS DEMISSION... HANS DECAPITATION ... HANS...EUH.. EXPLOSION...* ( imitation of a peasant in fury holdinga Fork). Sorry all this revolution awake something in my french mind. (turn to face the royal gard throw a stone and chant) *Give them a brain*

Maggie Heels

Prince... but for how long... 😁😊

Crystal Peaches

This has an epic, cinematic feel to it. A slow burn to what is to come and the artwork absolutely reflects that. Cannot wait for the next part, and the art is so good it tells a story without any words.

I've been a fantasy fan since I was a little kid, & my dad introduced me to old films that he enjoyed as a boy. My love of history & RPGs only enhanced it. I'm looking forward to the next installment.

So far, we’ve only had tiny hints about possible transformations and gender shifts, and even so, I’m totally hooked. The characters are so well built. I’m invested in them and their future already. Can’t wait for more, and I’ll definitely go check out more of Zoe Storm’s work!

Still processing all the different themes, elements and characters and where the story is going. Ultimately waiting for the underlying deception that seems to be present to be more fully revealed. In relation to this I will trust the Queens assessment of Gunner that she shared with Hans as someone not to be trusted.

I sent this to my Kindle library and read it in bed last night. It kept me reading until the end despite my eyes growing heavy. I enjoyed it. The king and archduke, as similar-looking cousins, reminded me strongly of the real life (or death) cousins who looked remarkably similar, George V of England and Nicholas II of Russia. The revolutionary theme of Chapter 2 emphasised that thought. But George V vetoed the idea of giving Nicholas sanctuary in England becoming, in my view, substantially responsible for the murder of the Tsar and his family. In this story, members of the royal family are offered sanctuary, but I assume that things won't go smoothly. (Oddly, I took a short break from a Zoe Storm book to read the two chapters.) Reading the chapters on a paperwhite device, I thought that Emory's artwork looked really effective in monochrome, resembling photographs from a vanished era.

Really lovely start, Han's Injury seems pretty straightforward especially with the discomfort with riding, outside of the usual discomfort from hours spent in a saddle. The coup seems more complicated than what we're shown, and i'm eager to see how the prince and party arrived at their current location and how things happened before their exit. Right now, it's hard to say who can be trusted. Will sees to like the prince perhaps more than he should, but a knight for a princess, well, that may be something else altogether. Though, only time will tell. The archduke may be suspicious, but i need to see more. Wonderfully crafted story, Zoe. It really scratches my fantasy itch and I'm eager for more. The characters are expertly crafted and I look forward to seeing how things progress. Em, the art is wonderful, with depth and detail as always. Finding the details outside of the expressions is always a treat.

Fun fact: one of my few directions for Emory regarding the art was exactly that — the king and archduke being very similar like George V and Nicholas II! So you're on to something here 😊

Pet Jeffery

Emory followed your direction brilliantly (as one would expect). I think that more people would have picked up on the George V/Nicholas II connection if more people were aware of the tragic history of the Russian revolution and civil war. The events did much to shape the rest of the twentieth century and would surely be better known but for the three things, they're complicated, the governments of the western powers behaved shamefully, and the history is depressing (after the fall of the Provisional Government, there were no longer any possible good outcomes for the poor Russian people). Depressing but, if you can bear to look at it, fascinating. The book from which I took a short break to read the two chapters was The Transition Zone. While I enjoyed the book, I thought that it was too nice. Everything went too smoothly. The only non-accepting character was the uncle whose role in the book was minor.

Thank you, Hel! Yeah, I don't think we can trust anyone right now. Creating the art was such fun! 💖

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you very much, Pet. Glad you picked up on that deep lore! Very interesting note on the monochromatic images... I'm glad they hold up in their own way.

Emory Ahlberg

Thanks, Gemma! The plot is about to get twisty.

Emory Ahlberg

Yay! Thanks, Ella! Yeah, Zoe writes such compelling characters! I love it. 💕

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Kris! 💕 You're speaking my language - Iove ALL of those things, too. I can't wait to continue this!

Emory Ahlberg

I'm really glad you enjoyed the start, Crystal! Zoe's writing is so great. I had a lot of fun making the art. 💕

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Willow! This is definitely one of my favorites. I love fantasy. 💕

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you very, Tim! Zoe's story is so great, I really wanted the art to feeling like a historical drama show on HBO or something.

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Ellen! 💕 Based on this, I think you'll have some very interesting thoughts about the protagonist as things move forward!
