Emory, never let Nikki's father near her ever. All the pain she's going through is because of her father. Her mother is the only person who can help her. Her father will only make the pain worse. Frankly, whatever happens to Zack's father should happen to Nikki's. The pain both so-called man have could their children, why are they living.

Ellen Mellor

And we're back! And straight into the trauma! I really feel for Nicki but at the same time, seeing who and what she was - that homophobic asshole - I can't help but feel that she's become a better person through all this hell. I'm not saying that what was done to her has is justified but I'm not not saying that either... But the hideous torture only broke the cruel, shallow and fragile shell of the hyper-masculine ego to allow the more gentle, kinder person who has always been there to return to the surface. Ultimately, Davis failed. As ever. All he did was to undo the abuse that Nicki's father did. It's not a method I'd recommend - therapists are probably a better bet - but, y'know whatever works. And, as for Sandy... She seems less then happy by her surprise. I think that maybe she had other plans for her time at St. Christopher's. Maybe including a cute brunette... Excellent episode as always. Your writing just goes from strength to strength and the artwork is sublime as always. Also, a shout out for the lettering. It took me a moment to work out why it was so small to begin with (I mean, my eyes aren't getting any younger!) but then realised that we were 'hearing' them from Nicki's perspective while she was heavily dissociating, so her mom was barely impinging on her awareness. Nicely done. (I also like the font you use. It looks like a nice, professional one. Perhaps a Comicraft or Blambot? I'm a total fonts nerd. My friend and I used to be able to clear rooms discussing who the best letterrer in the business was. For my money, it's Todd Klein but I will always have a soft spot for John Workman and Tom Orzechowski. The latter just for his ability to take Claremont's epic speeches and render them legibly on the page.) Also, also. Chapter 69? Nice.

2026-09-14 23:00 ENFIN! i miss them. Nicky trauma are real shit, poor girl. ( i really love to see what was living nicky during the island period) feels like Jill had the easy treatement😄 Sandy don't look that much happy to learn her boyfriend will be with her at universty😁 ( i wonder if the reason of that is still a sexy redhead 🤨) Just a thing, but during the reaction of the mother discovering silent nicky. ( between the preview and the flashback) the dialogue is writing really short and with the colors you used i find it hard to read it

Phew! At least Nikki will have Sandy by her side. She’s really going to need her.

Kris Greg

I've missed this story so much that I could actually hear the TV announcer saying "PREVIOUSLY ON HALF SISTERS." Nikki needs to process her trauma if she's going to survive mentally. I loved the ending with Sandy, & the reference to "Anything But Boring" was nice. I went back & re-read that story recently, & it's still great. Please give us more Half Sisters soon.

Crystal Peaches

Peak storytelling. Mystery romance realisation, all beautifully woven together. I really care deeply for Nikki and Sandy and you combine that with such gorgeous artwork. Leaves me breathless in the best possible way and I cannot wait for the next part. You mix joy and sadness so well. just wonderful stuff.

Pet Jeffery

I'm currently up to Episode 41. Obviously, I'm reading Half Sisters faster than you're creating it. I wonder how long it will be before I read an Episode as soon as it appears and can comment meaningfully upon it.

animalmusic

Wow what I was expecting in my head was wrong, but this was so needed and better to see! This is what had to happen for Nikki to keep moving forward and for the mindset to start matching. It will be interesting to see if more flashbacks of what Nikki went through. Things/ training we have never seen of what She had to endure when they were changing Her and breaking Her, that got repressed that actually succeeded without her realizing and now comes to light. Maybe that’s a way for Her to start embracing her body that she actually had hidden away. A Body that her Mind was trained to lust for and use and become.

Jade Diaz

Amazing to see fat Davis reappear like some kind of fucking malevolent demon

Firewalker

Nikki talking about kissing Zach made me tear up. Beautiful work. 🦋💙💖

Jenny S

It's a little thing, and obviously there's other external elements involved in this story, but the "long distance relationship suddenly becoming a short distance relationship" anxiety is very real :P

Crewchick

It is no secret how much I really love this story and how much I missed it during its hiatus. But OMG WOW!!!! The Drama! You took us from 0-120 mph in 40 panels! Holy Shit, 4-0 panels!!!!! That is insane, but so appreciated. I really needed a "sharing size" treat like this. And of course, I scarfed it down all by myself in one sitting. 😉 Thanks for the flashback, as hard as it might be to write and for Nikki to re-live. But as others have said, I think this is the hard but needed path to healing and wholeness. And the scenes with Mary Palmer are perfect. She is handling the twists and curves like a pro driver. I loved that line, "Sometimes, baby, holding it together means letting yourself fall apart in a safe place. Trust me, I know from experience". Mary Palmer is AMAZING! A Texas Strong woman with also a Texas size heart. And more wisdom than an Ivy League Ph.D. I can only imagine the real life experience we might see in a backstory or flashback that brought her to this truth she can now share with Nikki. And Nikki, so much unpacked and yet a well much deeper filled with trauma to be plunged into and drawn up to the surface to be processed and dealt with. While a lot of readers may have been rooting for the kiss; this trauma and it's processing, really is my "jawn". Like classic literature, I love the study of the human condition, emotion and psychology people apply to their situations and the lessons we learn from it. Even if it is simply to validate our own trauma and experience. It is in these moments I think this story transcends being a trans story and is simply a human story. If we can see Nikki survive such a painful, violent and violative situation, then most of our own life challenges begin to look far less complicated and manageable with the right mind set and approach that I think we will see Mary Palmer help Nikki find. I don't think you could have written and drawn these scenes any better. And even at 40 panels, I was still crying out for more! And maybe even ugly crying right along with Nikki in panel 36. Oh please, the need for so much more is real! I found the dialog with Davis interesting and insightful. I actually saw similarities to one of our chats about the dysmorphic aspect of a forced transition that is left incomplete and the psychological complications it can create in identity. Left in the middle neither fully male nor female and left that way not by choice (not a commentary on those who do choose to be that way). That little bit of their maleness shrunken and virtually useless, and that which makes them female, foreign, and internally feeling like weakness and failure. "Could I have fought back harder"? "Would it have been better to have died fighting as me than existing as 'this'?" Nikki makes this voice in her head real. Controversy warning!: For me, in my mind, I actually think Davis might be right! In a forced transition of a heterosexual, it might be easier and dare I say kinder, to do a full SRS transition. They are used to thinking in binary terms. As traumatic as the transition may be, when it is complete they are still able to see their world in a binary lens. The polls have just been reverse. Yeah, right "just", but you know what I mean. That in-between is hard for most cis to understand and accept. And we see Nikki's views on homosexuality before Clinic 12. With full SRS Nikki would only really have to deal with two possible sexual identities depending on how she can internally process them. She allows her plumbing to dictate her sexuality and presents and engages as a heterosexual female. Or, she allows whatever internal sexual orientation remains from her pre transition reality, and she chooses to present and engage as a lesbian, again defaulting to the new plumbing on how that engagement occurs. And yes there is bi and pan and everything else, but I don't have time for a full dissertation. In Nikki's case, this might have lessened the impact of the existential crisis in kissing Zack and liking it. Lie or not, she could have placated herself with the excuse that with the hormones and SRS, function was simply following form. With her binary view, the idea of being gay ("not that there is anything wrong with that" yes Signfeld reference) causes system-wide failure and shutdown. She and Zach having the same plumbing forces her to hit a hard wall and question herself at her core. "Was Davis right all along"? Has Hutchinson already won, and I just have not realized it?" Cue up Cake's "The Distance". Worse yet, Was Hutchinson right all along about that aura thing? 😱🤯 I am sure Emory will walk us through this trauma in brilliant, insightful and wise form. In any event, I think this was not the opening up of Nikki's true sexuality, but simply bleeding from an unattended and infect wound. It is far too early in Nikki's processing and growth for any real sexual engagement. That requires a level of maturity and comfort with self Nikki is not even close to yet. I think this kiss was not about sex, but a confused and repressed soul crying out for and responding to kindness and human contact. And I think Zach's response was the most appropriate given his situation ("still gay" and in a real relationship with Mondo) and probably his own ability to perceive Nikki's pain and desperation. Any other response would have hollowed out Zach as a real person and made him just a passing TPP. Now OMG Sandy! What have you gotten yourself into, girl? 😂 I think I know where this season's reality TV energy and drama will be coming from! 😂 🤪 Honestly, though, this season will be very heavy with Nikki working through major trauma, under increasing pressure from Hiutchinson, and at constant risk of exposure living on campus. Sandy will of course continue to be her wise and protective presence in Nikki's life but also provide a bit of the lighter and somewhat comic relief drama we will need to get through Nikki's hardcore trauma. "Fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy ride"!

Emory Ahlberg

Thanks, Ella! It’s definitely a relief to get them back in the same town finally! Sandy brings a kind of support that even Nikki's mom can't provide because Sandy knows exactly what it's like to wake up in a body that doesn't feel like hers. I’m really looking forward to writing their dorm dynamic!

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Nolwenn! It was hard to write those Davis scenes because he represents such a specific, terrifying kind of loss of control. But I think it was important to show that the cruelty wasn't just physical, but psychological. Regarding Sandy's reaction to Josh... it's complicated. She loves him, but St. Christopher's was supposed to be her fresh start, a blank slate where she could be just Sandy. Josh bringing his whole trunk of memories complicates that reinvention! More to come on that. On the lettering... I wanted that "drowning" effect where sound gets muffled during a panic attack... Her words aren't being heard. 💕

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Ellen! 💖 And isn't that the main tragedy of Nikki's arc? It's a horrible irony that it took a monster like Davis to shatter the toxic armor Howard Palmer built around his son. It wasn't a cure I'd wish on anyone, but it certainly stripped Nikki down to her rawest, most honest self. And she's becoming more like her 'old' self every day she is able to move forward, even if it's an inch. I'm glad the lettering choice made sense for you! Yeah, I wanted that visual representation of dissociation where the world feels small and distant. And thank you so much for the comparison to Orzechowski! 💕

Emory Ahlberg

Thanks, Andre. 💕 I admit it’s hard to write Howard sympathetically because his failure is so absolute. He represents that specific kind of cowardly parent who sacrifices their child to save their own skin, which feels almost worse than Hutchinson's active malice. Mary has stepped up. She's realizing that protecting her child means fighting the husband she stood by for years. I definitely share your anger toward the fathers in this story. They set the fire, and now the kids are the ones having to walk through the ashes!!!

Andre

I'm sorry, Emory, but ashes to me, implies that the whole ordeal is over. They are both still in the fire.

Gemma

What a dramatic, exciting emersion back into Half Sisters. The cinematic quick flash back and then bang- the aftermath of ‘the kiss.’ So glad that the enormity of this experience on Nikki was not watered down. Gees, she looks so pretty, feminine and vulnerable sitting on her bed. The look of shock on her face highlighting the enormity of psychological dissonance she is experiencing that triggered dissociate state. Beautifully illustrated imagery that both captures beauty of her feminine features, the mascara and eye liner on her ‘doe like eyes’ with the reflective image of her mum, truly amazing. Then, Emory, you let us, beyond the blankness in her eyes. Beginning with the nasty image of Davis, we get to see, are reminded of the enormity of underlying psychological traumas that exist Nikki that she is yet to open up about and process. It was so important to remind us all of the horror of the traumas Nick/ Nikki encountered. The changes she has undergone physically and psychologically. The swaggering, machoNick. The subtle ways he reveals even some of his rigid, hard lined, and prejudiced views around people’s sexuality (even if meant to insult Davis). How this trauma being triggered and revisited following kissing Zach must have fed into sense of shame, becoming all the things Davis said he would become. I hate how this triggered trauma contaminated what I saw as a pure and beautiful, spontaneous experience of kissing Zach. Nikki’s confusion certainly causing an emotional melt down. I am so pleased that Nikki was able to begin open to her mum at this time not only about this suppressed traumas she has been carrying. I was also so pleased that she spoke about ‘the kiss,’ and moreover tge feelings arising within her. If she hadn’t, I’m sure what happened would have become, felt like another dirty secret that would be internalised as another shameful experience, further adding to her trauma. Her mum’s response, holding her, connecting and grounding her conveying and providing comfort in Nikki’s emotional angst and confusion. Affirming and also providing the love, security and acceptance, no words really needed when maternal nurturing Nikki needed in her fragile state. Love the switch up and balance you provided as we moved from heavy to the light, more uplifted emotional state Sandy is in. Love the Anywhere but Boring’ reference that adds to both ‘story worlds,’ making them both feel more real. I am so happy for Sandy and her grounded emotional state, how things are coming together in her life with Josh. Sandy is going to be such an important emotional resource of stability for Nikki, helping her navigate the numerous, and differing emotions, thoughts, feelings she is dealing with. Helping her to name them, and hopefully helping her make sense of this myriad of different thoughts, feelings, emotions and separating and not letting the past trauma contaminate and undermine emerging aspects of Nikki, and her self acceptance around realisations around her inner psyche and who she is as a person.

Gemma

Addition reflection- I wonder if Nikki will cross paths at some stage with Davis’s wife- Kendra?

Emory Ahlberg

💕 Yep! Sandy has spent weeks constructing this fantasy of her new life at St. Christopher's where she gets to be the main character on her own terms, completely independent of her past. Having Josh suddenly standing in her living room - even with the best, most loving intentions - threatens to pop that bubble!

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Firewalker! 💕 It broke my heart writing that scene because it’s such a tangled mess. Nikki is finding these tiny pockets of safety and real emotion with Zach, but because the entire context is built on Hutchinson’s abuse, it feels dangerous to her. I really wanted to capture how confusing it is when your only lifeline is tied to the thing you’re fighting against.

Emory Ahlberg

Thanks, AM. 💕 We are definitely going to see more of those lost months. It’s terrifying for Nikki to realize she might be good at things she hates, or worse, that she might be enjoying aspects of a life forced upon her.

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Pet! I always worry about the dreaded "caught up" wall! Writing these episodes takes a lot out of me emotionally, especially the heavy trauma scenes with Nikki, so the pace creates a bit of a buffer for my own mental state too. But having readers binge through it means the flow is working! Hopefully, the wait between episodes just gives the cliffhangers a little more bite until I can get the next pages out. 💕

Emory Ahlberg

Aw, thank you, Crystal! Mixing those genres is a definitely a bit of a balancing act. I never want the darkness to swallow the human moments of connection or the humor, so having Sandy and Nikki act as counterweights to each other helps. Visualizing Nikki’s dissociation versus Sandy’s vibrant integration helps ground the emotion, I think. 💕

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Kris! It was fun to I had to throw in that nod to "Anything But Boring." Nikki's mom was wearing an AbB top last season, so maybe she'll trick Nikki into watching haha. Nikki’s mental survival is definitely the main stakes right now. She's afraid if she cracks internally, everything else falls apart.

Emory Ahlberg

I always look forward to your deep dives, Diana! 💕 Yeah, writing that flashback was brutal but also I think essential. For us, it has been a while since we saw Nikki at Clinic 12. For her, it has been only about 3 months since she was released. Mary Palmer is absolutely the MVP here. She has to be the rock because Nikki is currently sand slipping through an hourglass. Your theory about Davis possibly being "right" regarding the binary is chilling but fascinating. Nikki definitely viewed the world in rigid terms. But I actually think if she'd had bottom surgery it would have mentally broken her completely. I’m glad you read the kiss that way. Nikki is starving for safe human contact that isn't violent or transactional. And yes, Sandy is absolutely walking into a sitcom setup that’s about to go off the rails. She wanted to become her own person at St. Christopher! Thank you again! 💕

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Gemma! 💕 I was trying to capture how PTSD superimposes the past over the present, literally distorting what Nikki sees even when she’s staring at her own mother. You used the word "contaminated" regarding the kiss, and that is exactly what happened It should have been a moment of genuine connection, but those memories turned it into a trigger. It was painful to write young Nick’s bigotry in that flashback, but it explains why Nikki feels such complicated shame now. She feels like she’s becoming what she hated, while also now recognizing that hatred was wrong. If mom hadn't been there to catch her, Nikki would have shattered. Sandy is definitely going to be the anchor Nikki needs, assuming Sandy can keep her own head above water with Josh saying he's moving to Texas!

Pet Jeffery

Thank you for your response, Emory. I've now read the first 54 episodes, so I'm catching up. I'm sure that writing Half Sisters takes a lot out of you emotionally. Reading the episodes takes a lot out of me emotionally. There are limits to how much I'm able to binge on the episodes. That's partly because of the emotional impact; how much can I take? It's also because I can't rush reading an episode. There's so much in them; I need to read the facial expressions as well as the words (especially the more troubled facial expressions). I look at many of the panels sufficiently long for my tablet screen to fade, and I need to tap the screen to refresh it. It's an emotional roller coaster but, yes, the flow is working.

Claire

... and something is going on with Sandy. She seemed less excited about Josh joining her at St. Christopher's. Interesting times ahead for ALL of them.

Crewchick

I don't know that had bottom surgery been done to Nikki at Clinic 12 that it would have completely broken her. We are finding a lot of Mary Palmer in Nikki. I do think it would have been a lot more immediately devastating because it is a brutal slap of reality the moment they wake up and reach down there, and instantly know it is irreversible without even being told. So from Davis' perspective, perhaps that is a good and desirable thing because that kind of near "game over" devastation probably makes most patients/prisoners more pliable and compliant, because all hope and ties to a past life are broken. But Nikki not having bottom surgery was allowed false hopes. Nikki ran to the beach to try and get off the island and get back home. Nikki and her Dad were under the self deluding hope that All Nikki needed was an all protein died and two a day workouts to get back to being Nick. As the reader, we can see how insane and futile that false hope is. But people will cling onto false hope like it was a life jacket in the deep sea no matter how many facts and how much truth is put in front of them. And sadly many times that false hope is not a life jacket but an anchor. We tease Nikki for being the "poutty princess" but in subtle ways I have been seeing an inner strength in Nikki, like the way she protected Janice and stood up to Hutchinson. The brief reflection up in her room before the date, looking at all her trophies and accepting that she may need to find her athletic and competitive needs through women's sports. It was a very brief and subtle moment, but it was huge. Because it was the first time that Nikki did not talk or think about getting back to Nick but living as Nikki. I still think Nikki could have gotten to that moment, even after bottom surgery. Yes, the Clinic 12 experience would have been magnitudes worse. Nikki did not kill herself on the beach when she had the gun, because deep down she wanted to live. She might not have used these words but, in that split second of decision, she saw how precious life was no matter what form it might take. Had she had bottom surgery, the trauma would have been far more intense but, I think her choice would have remained the same. She has Mary's strength. And the one thing both Nikki's Mom and Dad share is that they don't tolerate quitting. And Nikki is not a quitter in football or life. Once Nikki was home I think she would have found the exact same support she has now in her Mom, Sandy, Laura and all the others. But she might have avoided all that wasted time with her Dad, and forced him up front to accept his daughter or mourn his son. Then there is the whole other issue of Texas and Women's sports. If Nikki does go out for any sports teams and does well, it could put Nikki under even greater scrutiny for performance enhancing drugs and to confirm gender. I doubt that SRS will change any genetic marker that might have some ability to identify gender. But if she passed the "pull down your pants" test, perhaps no one would push the matter further? At this point speculating about how Nikki might have responded back in Clinic to SRS is just that speculation because we are more than 3 months well past that point. How that could have shaped her situation today is just "shouda, coulda, woulda, but didn't". But on the other side of all this trauma, Nikki will see a future filled with opportunities and choices. I still think SRS is a valid one for her to consider seriously. In the end it may not be the right choice for her, but I think it is a real one too, that should be fully weighed for its benefits and detriments. Or maybe it is a choice for Nikki to possibly ponder, but a decision left to the reader to think and imagine about after the conclusion?

Pet Jeffery

I've now read to the end of episode 58. Nikki in ecstasy as she rides Snowflake seemed a good place to break for the day.

Emory Ahlberg

Aw, that’s one of my favorite scenes. Perfect place to stop. 😊

Pet Jeffery

Oh, and I said that I need to read the characters' facial expressions. The faces say so much, but it's not just their faces. I was particularly struck by a panel in which Nikki has her back turned, her fists clenched and her whole body tense. Wow! But Nikki on Snowflake is a lovely scene and, as you say, a perfect place to stop.

Thomas Tolliver

That camera look from Sandy at the end 😅😂 I know my depraved self enjoyed the darker parts of this chapter, but I imagine it was rough for some others. Nikki is going through a lot, I'm sure she'll pull through though.

Pet Jeffery

Today, I've really binged on Half Sisters and I'm now completely caught up. Wow! I'm blown away by it. I thought I'd be caught up in time for episode 72 or 73, but instead it's in time for episode 70. The transition was heart-breaking, from Nikki briefly happy, carefree to the most traumatised we've seen her. At the end of episode 68, I thought that something terrible had happened to Zach, but what follows in episode 69 hit me far harder than anything that might have happened to Zach. Of all the characters, I find, Nikki is the one about whom I care the most. She's been through so much and faces so much more.

Emily

some of your best work, as per usual..also Davis called testosterone poison. Me thinks, twas a Freudian slip.

Emory Ahlberg

Aw, thank you, Pet! 💕 Nikki is a favorite of mine because although she seems like a simple characters, she has a lot of complexity under the surface. I'm so glad you're looking forward to seeing more of her story.

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you so much, Emily! 💕 And I think you might be right!

Emory Ahlberg

LOL, I'm so glad Sandy's expression translated exactly what I hoped. Yeah, the darker parts felt necessary. It's easy to forget that Nikki has only been away from the island for about 3-4 months at this point.

Pet Jeffery

I don't think that Nikki is a simple character. As I see it, Nikki has four readily discernible and often conflicting selves: 1. The authentic self. The boy who protected other kids from bullies, hung out with the girl scouts, and loved horses. 2. The macho self, twisted from the authentic self by pressure from his father. The sports obsessed self, the bully, the self who cheated on Lauren. While the authentic self surely enjoyed sports, I think that the macho self replaced enjoyment with an obsession with winning. Maybe the macho self never truly enjoyed anything. 3. The traumatised self. The self reacting to being kidnapped and forcibly feminised. 4. The feminine self. Nikki's feminisation is more than skin deep, but (for quite different reasons) both the macho and traumatised selves reject her feminine aspects. We rarely see the true girl Nikki but, when we do, it's sunshine breaking through storm clouds. The scene where she rides Snowfall seems to me very much a girl and her horse. Perhaps a more obvious girl moment is when Nikki kisses Zach, a moment soon overcome by the traumatised self. Sometimes, we see more than one of these selves simultaneously. At least, that's my take on Nikki. I think, too, that Nikki is the most physically beautiful character. She looks like a younger version of her mother, and we can see why Mrs Palmer was once Miss Texas.

stacy C

Great stuff.....a welcome return :-) x

SingularCurve

Oh Nikki! That part of you that you let go when you finally realize you don't have to hold onto the macho bullshit anymore and just feel, it can be terrible, it can be liberating, it can be non committal. When you've been force femmed though, there is that whole other psychological layer of bullshit you have to work through. Davis is a total asshole and deserves everything he gets. Great chapter, deep impact, unbelievable heartbreak, so many emotions. Thanks again!

Strangest

Do we have a txt version as well?

Emory Ahlberg

Unfortunately, I don't write them in a text-friendly format. I write the comics as a full script.

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Stacy! Happy to be back with Nikki and Sandy

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Singular! 💕 Nikki's ultra-masculinity was a performance she used to please her dad and survive the locker room. She is raw and exposed without that shield. When the source of change is a monster like Davis, the parts of the transition that feel natural become tainted by trauma. Davis changed her body and colonized her mind with fear. Obviously, it's a lot for her to carry - and it's only getting heavier the longer she refuses to deal with it.

Ashleigh Christina

I went back and reread this. Nikki is going to need Zach in her life. Because we saw Zach was grounding to her. Kind of like when guy and girl best friends finally become a couple. Only this couple started as two boys in football and one was turned into a woman.
