Nikki's shopping trip ends with an unpleasant encounter...

Yay! Half Sisters is here to brighten your Monday with 17 new pages of Nikki and her mom. 💖

Writing this episode was so interesting. We really get to delve into Nikki's thoughts and even a bit of more backstory for her.

My favorite image is page 4 because I'm a sucker for POV shots -- and then page 11 because I'm a softie.

A bit of a warning: There is some nasty, bigoted language in this episode... Because some people suck. 🙁

As always, I absolutely can't wait to hear your thoughts!

P.S. As may be obvious by the ending, I fibbed that we're switching back to Sofia for the next episode. Nikki has one (or maybe two) more.

I miss Sofia though

Emory Ahlberg

Aw ❤️. Don’t worry, Dov. Big plans for Sofia, too!

Pelicanboss

I'd forgotten Nikki was not voice trained and of course she would sound masculine. Female voicing is gonna push Nikki further down in that rabbit hole until she'll get use to being a girl and maybe even like it

Alyson Greaves

Oh my god, Nikki! I've just woken up so I'll have more coherent thoughts later; right now I am reduced to, OH MY GOD, NIKKI! ❤

Alison St John

Thank goodness for the knights in shining armour, wonderful to see the tables turned on bigots ❤️

Alyson Greaves

Snow plough Nikki, barging through all her problems, still powerless in the face of her mum. (And still terrible at processing affection from other people, bless her!) Also, God, her vertigo. Been there. She needs a hug so bad, probably from someone who will preface it with, this is a totally manly hug, brah, this is just dudes being dudes, dude. And then the guys show up and Nikki, denser than most of the periodic table, assumes they're going for her mum and switches immediately into fierce protector mode and like, girl, if you could only learn to apply that level of love and protectiveness towards yourself, maybe you wouldn't have quite so many panic attacks. (Also taking Nikki aside and quietly asking, "Does putting your significantly less beefy than usual body between hostile men and your mother count as 'too much' love or just enough?") And maybe if you thought for 0.3 seconds before acting you'd remember about the mismatch between how you look and how you sound. She's so dumb, I love her. The Tarzan hair thing is the best backstory reveal ever and I thank you for it from the bottom of my heart. And hey, look! A root of her defensive homophobia! In an ideal world Sofia would be recording this on her phone and sending it to Nikki's therapist; what a breakthrough. Hell yes for the store guy being a badass. And then immediately being a kind...ass. idk. lol she makes the slightest reference to wearing a dress and hearts start appearing in her mother's eyes again. Focus, lady! God this episode strengthening the connection between Nikki and her mum. So sweet. So good for Nikki! Surely everything will go smoothly from here on out...

mdaily

hmmm...interesting developments. Nikki's mom seems to be the only person who is actually on his side. She is afraid for him, and is encouraging him to be more feminine in order to keep him safe. he cares about her in turn, and will cooperate in order to keep her from worrying. This is the first time that Nikki has had any real morivation to cooperate with the process, other than intimidation.

mdaily

also interesting to note that the knight in shining armor here turns out to be a very brave and powerful gay man, which has to help Nikki's attitudes towards gay people begins to evolve. Momma is fully on board at this point, which makes us wonder what goes wrong that she is so upset that she does not accompany Nikki to his first meeting with Sofia a week from the time of this story

mdaily

Y'know, Emory, you are damned good at this!

Emory Ahlberg

Yep! This will be a big change. Nikki already passes as a (beautiful) young woman if you're only looking at her. But once she SOUNDS like a woman, that will be a whole other ballgame.

Emory Ahlberg

Okay, "Snow Plough" is a startlingly applicable nickname for her. 🤣 Wow, she really DOES need a hug. Maybe she'll get one when they get back home. Honestly, Nikki's mom is the only one who can hug her easily and without any kind of pretense. Nikki accepts affection from mom with a sort of begrudging "it's a mom thing" attitude. Anyone else? STAY AWAY. LOL, I really loved posing Nikki in "fierce protector mode" and deliberately chose for her to stand like Superman, hands on hips, trying to look intimidating... Nikki has a huge blindness when it comes to her appearance. She is still shocked that people don't look at her and instantly think "BOY" (and now "BOY IN A BRA"). Of course, this is a defense mechanism. Once she allows herself to accept that people will see her as a girl, she's terrified that she'll begin to see herself as one, too. Thank you, Aly! I've been waiting on the backstory reveal for so long, lol. When you look at Nikki's "before" pictures, I think most people just assume she was always a rough-and-tumble boy who was always kind of big and that traditional masculinity came natural to her. But no. Nikki was a skinny, long-haired kid who got the shit kicked out of him during recess by the other, bigger boys. Dad's reaction was to toughen him up as much as possible. We should also remember that Dad literally bragged to Mr. Hutchinson that he has KILLED people. Whenever Nikki was homophobic, I only felt bad for her. It's deeply rooted in her childhood trauma. For her, being seen as even a LITTLE feminine = pain and ostracization. I love the store guy! And I love that Nikki was able to admit he was "badass." Plus, she showed him her muscles because that's the nice thing to do for "gay dudes." 😁 That feels like growth (even if only a little) Mom is DEFINITELY daydreaming about dresses for Nikki and how she might be able to cox her into one ("Just one time, it'll be good for Nick to know how it feels for his future girlfriends..." she'll justify to herself) I am also in love in Nikki and mom's relationship. And, in a weird way, I can't wait for us to see her with her dad so we (and maybe she?) can see the vivid contrast. 💖

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Alison! I really believe the salesman would've beat them into next week!

Emory Ahlberg

What's sad is I initially picked for them to be in Texas for fun -- and now Texas is becoming an anti-trans hellscape. ☹️

Emory Ahlberg

Also, I'm having flashbacks to young Nikki experiencing his mom's harassment and how that helped shaped his perceptions, too...

Emory Ahlberg

That's right, m! Once Nikki sees his mom is genuinely terrified that he'll be targeted and attacked (and Texas being Texas these days, that's a real concern) he is willing to give in A LITTLE to the idea that it's better if he passes as "all girl" in day-to-day life. But, man, it'll still be hard... and hearing a different, much girlier voice come out of his mouth is gonna be a real blow to his ego.

Alyson Greaves

I mean it definitely adds the extra element of danger! Also, though, 😢

Emory Ahlberg

I loved the shop guy! They will need to return to this store (or maybe the shop guy opens his own boutique) for shopping in the future! Nikki has a reflective homophobia / transphobia that is more defensive than anything else. I don't think he actually hates anybody. He's just afraid that if he's seen as too nice to "the queers" he'll be lumped in with them and will be in danger all over again. Hopefully this experience will help his attitude develop and that maybe he can be both nice AND strong.

Emory Ahlberg

Aw, thank you, m! I'm trying to be, at least. 💖

Alyson Greaves

I have to start by saying, page 11? With her mother's hand over her chest? Heart-breaking! And oh god yes, the Superman muscle pose, with the loose sleeves accentuating how slim she is now. Need to find a new way to be intimidating, Nikki... > Once she allows herself to accept that people will see her as a girl, she's terrified that she'll begin to see herself as one, too. Oh no, she's going to lash out, isn't she? Nikkiiiiii The more of a complete picture of Nikki's life we get, the more sympathetic she is, and I love how that's worked, how this jock pain in the ass is like a deep-friend onion: a thick but brittle outer shell and then so many layers underneath. And I really want her dad to have to face someone who doesn't come at him on his own terms, i.e. man-on-man ego-butting. Remembering as well, Sofia's thoughts about how he seemed ashamed to be attracted to her, and thinking that that's where more of Nikki's homophobia came from. > ("Just one time, it'll be good for Nick to know how it feels for his future girlfriends..." she'll justify to herself) Hell yes, queen. Waving a flag with NIKKI'S MUM on it.

Alyson Greaves

This kid is just a big ball of angst in a chastity cage

mdaily

the shop guy is definitely an interesting character. one, for all we know, he already owns the store! Grew up obviously gay in Texas! Fit as all hell! Used to defending his people! Has a trans niece whom he seems very close to. Everything that Nicholas isn't, in many ways. Nick would learn from the human just by being in his presence

Emory Ahlberg

Page 11 is my favorite, especially knowing the history there and that this isn't the first (or second, or third) time mom has had to do this for Nikki. I'm imagining a scene after a big loss where Nikki is blaming herself for what happened. Dad gives empty platitudes, and all Nikki can see is his respect draining away, panic ensues, Mom comforts...

Alyson Greaves

Incredible how much my opinion on Nikki has turned right around while remaining in many respects exactly the same: big dumb homophobic jock who wouldn't know a feeling if it came sailing by at head height, but also precious sweetheart who cares too deeply and hides it badly, a victim of expectations and success and luck (and also of forced feminisation) who needs to be protected.

Emory Ahlberg

> This kid is just a big ball of angst in a chastity cage LOL!!! Don't forget estrogen... 😉 > Need to find a new way to be intimidating, Nikki... The problem is she's so darn CUTE (and hot) 💖. > Oh no, she's going to lash out, isn't she? Nikkiiiiii 😬😬😬 > The more of a complete picture of Nikki's life we get, the more sympathetic she is, and I love how that's worked, how this jock pain in the ass is like a deep-friend onion: a thick but brittle outer shell and then so many layers underneath. LOL! This is one of the best metaphors I have ever read and it's absolutely perfect. I really do love Nikki's character. Now, if only she could love herself the same way. 😉 > And I really want her dad to have to face someone who doesn't come at him on his own terms, i.e. man-on-man ego-butting. Yes! Although I'm afraid Nikki will need to go through a couple stages with her dad. When we see them at the restaurant together, I think it's pretty clear he's embarrassed to be seen with his "daughter." What will happen to their relationship if Nikki sinks deeper into the role to protect herself (and mom's legit anxieties) all while dad is ashamed that this happened to his son because he's being blackmailed? Might he turn those feelings on Nikki? > Remembering as well, Sofia's thoughts about how he seemed ashamed to be attracted to her, and thinking that that's where more of Nikki's homophobia came from. Yes! I am certain that dad is probably quite bigoted.

Alyson Greaves

God, I can see Nikki eventually turning those feelings right back on her dad. You don't get to be embarrassed! This is your fault! Now suck it up because your obvious shame is DANGEROUS!

Artemesia

Amazing episode. I adore the pathos you put into these. Just the total mindfuck of what Nikki is going through. Bravo as always!

stacy C

Unfortunately bigots are a part of the world we live in....in our way of life you have to take the rough with the smooth, luckily the smooth parts far outweigh the rough x

2026-09-14 23:00 One more try without emojis... i think they make it worse to post it. JESUS Emory, what have you done... this story is too real for me already. Sometimes I forget myself and treat it like documentary footage... I always write every comment here with wet eyes... What can I say, you know how sensitive I am ;) (don't get me wrong, I have it in the back of my head that it's just a well-ordered series of ones and zeros, but still, it's so realistic). OK I'm late again and as always read all comments before writing mine... I love you all... this story is really closer & closer to my heart with every page read. I want to tell you all couple things... some of them will be very personal, some of them will be strong so keep in mind I warned you ;) First. My favorite page is obviously 17... Nikki has something in her situation that I will never have. Support for her "newborn" daughter that she never had before. Second. I have been bullied my entire school life. For reasons completely opposite of Nikki's. I was always overweight... have to this day. It always hits me when I hear an adult bully confess that what happened at school was just silly fun... I say a definite NO to such bullshit. My policy is no mercy for such people. The action takes place in Texas, right? Recently, there was a transgender scandal because of some politician. I do not want to go into details, but I know that Texas is known for the fact that almost everyone (if not everyone) carries a personal weapon. So I ask politely where the heck is Nikki's thigh holster that she has a Colt or Smith & Wesson in? Maybe Tarzan didn't like firearms (great story, by the way), but I find it hard to believe that [former] Texas' top quarterback doesn't like firearms ;) And I also believe that it makes no difference whether the gun is owned by a man or a woman. I have an idea, a suggestion for you Emory... maybe you will like it ;) The idea is for a pinup session and/or to be placed later in the story. I would be in heaven if I saw Nikki doing cosplay of some tough chicks... For example, Tomb Raider, of course, and then there are stars like Sarah Connor, Sergeant Ellen Ripley, Rita Vrataski aka the killer Angel of Verdun (Emily Blunt from the movie Edge of Tomorrow) etc. How do I see this in the story? Simple... A competition at school somewhere around chapter say 36 ;) WOW I didn't expect this post to come out so long. Kisses to everyone who persevered to the end.

oops, just re read it. a month from the time of the story

France Day

There seems to be only one direction for Nikki, which is slowly coming true in the present, despite her apprehensions as a young woman still plagued by her uncertainty. A truly intriguing piece of history in every sense of the word, thank you E.

Ella Cherry

Great episode! It added layers to the story and kept building a consistent and great character out of Nikki!

Emory Ahlberg

Yes, a little time has passed and Nikki has actually gone to a couple voice lessons. Sofia describes her voice as “huskier than expected” but (notably) doesn’t peg her as a fellow boy at first!

Emory Ahlberg

Oof “learn to be human.” 😭 Sadly, that’s exactly what Nick is going through with this whole process. The shop guy would be a great role model.

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Arty! ❤️ I love these characters so much and I love the, um, CHALLENGING situation they’re finding themselves in. So fun!

Emory Ahlberg

Especially with regular exfoliation and waxing! ❤️😉

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you so much, Ella. In a way, Nikki is totally unexpected to me. When she was introduced I never expected her to get her own spin-off. 😁

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you so much, France! ❤️ Nikki will hopefully find her own way out of the last and into the bright future! With help, of course….

Emily

I get the feeling Nikki's Mom and Nikki's X are a powerful force that will change Nikki's ideas about what it means to be a woman. Also, I can imagine Nikki meeting this Trans Sister and having an "EGG" moment. Tarzan hair my ass

Emily

You keep out doing yourself

Emily

I really like Nikki's Mom
