Lovely Patreon people!

We've been toying with the idea of creating a book about music production - something that maybe looks at the history of producing and the gear musicians/producers have been most influenced by, using past episodes of Tape Notes to tie all this together.

It would be super helpful to hear the sort of books you're interested in, any ideas (grand or small) that you might have, book titles, themes etc. Fire away below or feel free to DM us if you prefer!

Thank you for all your support and your ideas!

For me, a transcript of the most interesting question and answers including relevant screenshots of the DAW would probably be most interesting. A collection of the most practical ideas for producers could be really valuable. eg Four Tet on arranging, Fred Again on the joys of working anywhere on a laptop, Sub Focus on playing a gate with a keyboard, Chet Faker on the value of imperfection and mistakes. Idles & DJ Shadow on being truly yourself to create something new etc

I’d love a Tape Notes book, perhaps on songwriting? Or production maybe? All I’d ask for specifically is please have an audiobook version available. As a blind person, I’ve had quite a few disappointments over the years of books on music production, songwriting etc coming out, and there not being an audiobook for people like me to access the book. Some people do offer Ebook versions on request, which is great and very much appreciated, but I think an audiobook would be a win for everyone. Whether you’re blind, visually impaired, fully sighted, most people can access an audiobook.

I really like the layout of Attack magazine’s The Secrets of Dance Music Production Book - think the screenshots of session timelines that they used would work well with your concept. A focus on arrangement would be perfect. Also l, a collection of your guests’ best tips would be great too.

+1 !! I looooove that book but fortunately music production has progressed tons since the book was published. Many game changer plugins have been published, and there are many new things that are key to production now like remote collaboration or AI stem separation... It would be an amazing update on the subject, mixed with songwriting in general. I genuinely don’t remember coming back to a book as often since the Guide to Life by Bart Simpson 😂

Oooh, imagine John’s silky voice on the audio version!

I’d really like something that focused on modern production, the good and bad. A comprehensive snap shot of how music is made this decade ( or like from early 2010s to today). How artists not only embrace but are open about use of auto tune. The current state of sampling and copyright. How producers are making money (streaming controversy). How bands fell out the spotlight. I’m being vague but I’m trying to describe a book that’s like a time capsule for this era of music production and life. I think the business management aspects have significant influence on the mindset of how producers create.

I'd love a continuation or reorganization of the amazing interviews you have already conducted. One idea would be to organize it in a sort of 'recipes by genre'. I.e. "Here are some typical indie vocal chains, synths used, here's how they approach guitar arrangements etc." and here's how it's different in pop, dance, rock, etc.

An idea could be to take a page out of Steal Like An Artist by Austin Kleon, in which every point the author makes is backed up by quotes from different famous music artists. So in the Tape Notes book, you could sift through all the advice that your guests have given, categorize them, and go from there. If one section in your book is "Do the thing!", "Have a Vision Before You Start", or "Be Yourself", there is plenty of advice from artists on your show to fill these sections in with. This might not be exactly what you're looking to do though, but I'd read it!

If you covered gear lists and tips from all your past guests in one place where you talk about the specific tools and tips from all of the different producers, artists, and engineers, it would be a fantastic and diverse collection of from some of the best right from the source. I could also see Tape Notes doing an updated version of something like "The Producers Survival Guide" by Brian M. Jackson (released with Sound On Sound). You could potentially release follow up annual editions as well that cover each year's guests.
