On Anzac Day of 1999, life partners Keith Hibbins and David Campbell were walking through the Fitzroy Gardens in Melbourne when they were approached by two agitated young men, John Whiteside and Kristian Dieber. The young men claimed they were on the lookout for a pair of rapists who had just sexually assaulted a young woman nearby, but were they telling the truth?

Bastards. My heart breaks for Keith and David.

Parrots Liz

This is so tragic. The initial judge was a fkn ghoul.

Rachel Stankey

Such a heartbreaking story. And a classic example of the arrogance, confidence, and lack of consequences for so many straight white men. Sadly, not much has changed 25 years later.

It’s pride month here is the US, (maybe it’s global but I’m not sure of that) and I’m really glad Casefile has covered a case like this. Sadly there are many of them. I hope it serves to remind those who are too young to remember what it was like to be LGBTQ 20 years ago. I feel like it’s easy to forget the trauma of bullying, AIDs and lack of partnership acknowledgement. There were people who died for enjoying the rights we now take for granted today.

Storme

Very sad, poor David and Keith.

Minnie

Seems to be speaking faster then normal?

Brock

Shit story. No one won, but especially as horrible for poor David. Great story telling as always.

My god this whole story is such a mess. Horrible for everyone

Megan

Infuriating. The judge is as terrible as the judge in the rapist Brock Turner’s case.

Paulette

Toxic masculinity run amok then forgiven. Ugh. No winners here.
