23-year-old Jeff Gilham showed up on his neighbours doorstep in the early morning hours of August 28 1993 with a shocking claim. His older brother Christopher Gilham had just killed their parents, Stephen and Helen, and set their bodies on fire. In return, Jeff had stabbed Christopher to death.

The tragic news left residents of the Sydney suburb of Woronora in disbelief as they struggled to comprehend how this could happen to such a normal, happy family. But as the years went by, it emerged that all was not as it seemed.

Will I wake up at 3:30 a.m. to listen to Casefiles? Most definitely!

AR

When they started in on all the new "evidence" that he did it I just kept making the Kombucha girl face and looking at the length of this episode

AR

Also yet another episode where the Ozzie cops are just like, VIBES! Also also holy shit do you guys not have the equivalent of Brady violations in Australia? There were like 8 different Brady violations!!!!!!!

Susan Carruthers

Daang that was a roller coaster.. I'm still not sure Justice was served

AR

Also also also this episode was great. Got me all hyper at 5am.

N I

The detail about moving his glasses so he'd be incapacitated was... Diabolical

Linde

This is a wild ride honestly.

Sarah

Well. I thought I knew who it was immediately. And then I thought it was the other brother. And then I went back to my original opinion. And now I don’t know

Bluechurch77

I don't know??? I don't see Chris popping off, but I don't know about Jeffrey either. Mind bending.

paleoleigh

Best case of the new batch so far!

Shan He

The investigation of Jeffery started with the dispute of the inheritance and ended with the uncle wanting to redistribute the inheritance really made me sick to my stomach.

AR

i'm really surprised this case isn't better known, it's like the White House Farm murders and David Bain had a baby

Vanessa Allen

Damn this episode was good. Great job Casefile team!!! Did anyone else wonder if there could have been some sort of carbon monoxide leak that set off the brother?

madeline

At no point did I know where this was going

Emma Jane Young

I’ve lived in the suburb next to Woronora my whole life and I’ve never heard of this case before! Granted I was born 9 years after but still.

Paul Sgondea

Fantastic episode! So well researched and presented. Great job Casefile team. Listening to this episode was a fantastic way to attend to Sunday afternoon chores.

Demi V

From my personal bias, where my parent has a half-brother we're not close to and has done shady things to get money from us before, I can't believe this whole thing spiraled from a detached uncle who hadn't seen his brother in 6 months. And then he blamed the nephew for causing his emotional distress! Wild. Just wild.

Parrots Liz

What is a Brady violation?

Suicide Sauce

Double Murder Any% Speedrun, you can abuse the Intercom Glitch to stab your mom 17 times *and* set the house on fire in less than a minute (I was sure that they'd both done it, somehow. Gotten their stories straight, done mum and dad, both taken showers-- Christopher was found in a bath robe and his glasses were in the bathroom-- but then Jeffy decided he didn't want to share the inheritance and pulled a 'long live the king' on Chris. I probably just plan too many murders though. Er, watch too many movies, I mean)

Suicide Sauce

I look forward to the day someone listens to the story of my crimes while wiping down the bathroom counters

Suicide Sauce

It's when you have the hots for Christopher Knight

Suicide Sauce

I mean, you can make any evidence fit anything, I had a landlord that I was dead sure had killed his wife and saw all these 'signs' that he'd done it, and then one day she showed up looking fresh-faced and happy and it turned out she'd just left him for someone else and came back to serve him divorce papers

Paul Sgondea

Aww don’t degrade yourself like that, you’re worth kitchen counter wipedowns at least

Brock

I think this is simply one of those cases where no one will truly know truth apart from Jeffrey, whether he is innocent or not.

AR

In the U.S., the prosecution is required to turn over any potentially exculpatory evidence to the defense, in discovery or whenever they obtain it. Failure to do this is called a Brady violation, and even though it's a huge, huge, enormous illegal thing that can get your whole case thrown out or overturned or reversed, prosecution teams still commit Brady violations ALL THE TIME. it's really wild.

AR

i'm glad your landlord's wife was okay, but you probably had more "evidence" he did it than they had against Jeffrey in this case. "An innocent person would have put out the fire first instead of going after his brother who could have attacked him next" okay, Sherlock.

Charles Comiskey

Probably one of the best episodes this year. The writing and structure by Elsha was spot on for what happpened. I really don’t know what happened that night - only Jeffrey does.

Demi V

It's called a Brady violation because the Supreme Court ruled someone named Brady was denied a fair trial guaranteed under the constitution because the prosecution failed to disclose evidence they could be innocent. That said, I think that's also guaranteed under Australia's constitution, they just don't have a court case to cite each time there's a violation like the US does. The Miranda warning is also just the fifth amendment being explained to a suspect because a guy named Miranda had no idea it was his constitutional right.

Alex Ryan

Once again Casefile elevating the genre by giving us investigative journalism and brilliant storytelling! Personally I think Jeffrey is suspicious AF - I mean who rushes their sibling and stabs them 17 TIMES in that situation?! I don’t want to be married to someone who has that inside them. It takes a lot of rage and hate to kill someone that way.

Jessey Nettey

Any chance we could start getting trigger warnings in the descriptions for these early episodes? And maybe even a warning if a case is unsolved?

CAT Mom

For some crazy reason, I felt Jeffery was innocent from the jump. The "left out of the Will" uncle was the red flag for me.

Bob Trenwith

Why would we want to know in advance if the case is unsolved? That is part of the mystery, and mystery is what makes a good story. And what is a "trigger warning"?

Jessey Nettey

Content warning like cases of it mentions of sexual assault, violence against children, etc.

Bob Trenwith

SS - I thought it was Greg and Marsha getting it on.

Kayla

Amazing episode. I’m left very conflicted about the entire case and you all did an amazing job at laying out both possible accounts.

Mr Chips

I don’t mind warnings for exceptionally graphic content (beyond the typical for true crime) but for “unsolved”??? That will take away any sort of mystery or interest from many people. I say this respectfully, please don’t listen to this type of content if it’s too heavy for you.

Mr Chips

I was thinking the same, but maybe he knew that Christopher was going to kill him next for witnessing what he did to his parents.

Mr Chips

It’s pretty much what got Alec Baldwin off the hook in his murder trial

Mr Chips

I’m starting to think some commenters are just rage baiting

AR

they already do a trigger warning at the beginning of every relevant episode, specifically one for sexual assault and for crimes against children. oh do you mean a written warning too? why not just listen to the beginning of the ep? in this case neither of the brothers were young boys, wasn't Jefftey like 19? so those warnings wouldn't have applied.

AR

yeah after witnessing them slaughtering your parents I think grabbing the knife and attacking is a pretty understandable response!

Al

There is no way that Jeff DIDNT do it right??

Michael Brodie

Brilliant, wasn't it? As a narrative of the facts I mean.

simmo

This was a fantastic episode which still has me thinking, what really happened and who is guilty? As is mentioned elsewhere on this thread, I think only those involved truly know. It seems strange when confronted with that awful scene, your first reaction is to attack and kill your brother. Great work Casefile peeps.

Andreea

Ok so listened to this again and Im convinced Christopher did it. Jeffery’s account and reactions check out imo.
