This release of Second System includes the following improvements:-fixes to console handle duplication that affected some Python interpreter releases-more user and kernel32 functions from Windows 8.x/10+-one new DLL redirect to kernel32.dll, plus 15 others to ucrtbase.dll to resolve any discrepancies between the various MSVC 2015-22 runtimes available-several ntdll functions added to support possible future usage of kernel32/kernelbase from Windows 10 22H2 on Windows Vista/7-command prompt crash on close on Windows 8.1 is fixed-DXGI wrapper added for Windows Vista and 7; further details on full usage belowIn addition to the regular Second System package, there have been extensive tests of newer system DLLs from Windows 8.1 and 10. So far, one pair of DLLs have been identified to bring considerable benefit: d3d11 and dxgi.dll from Windows 8.1 (the Windows 10 versions are structurally incompatible with all previous versions of Windows). For the users who have copies of Windows 8.1, an add-on pack has been released to allow them to use those DLLs on Windows Vista and 7; it is located in the archive "d3d11_game.zip". It unlocks D3D11VideoDecoder, previously an 8.x exclusive, as well as newer DXGI features used by applications such as Kdenlive version 25.Updated 2025-11-12 at 1817 (UTC -5) to update the Windows 8.1 package to make some changes to the DXGI wrapper that improved compatibility with newer D3D11 games, such as Limbus Company.Updated 2025-11-22 at 1903 (UTC -5) to update the D3D11 pack to make some slight installer improvements and inform users that Windows 8.0 D3D11/DXGI files are insufficient; thus, Windows 8.0 will now be one of the target platforms for this pack once Second System is released for that platform. Second System 2.2 for Windows Vista and 7 have also been updated to add functions to the wrapper for cfgmgr32.dll and fix an issue with displaying the volume control applet on Windows 7.Updated 2025-11-23 at 1115 (UTC -5) to include various loader improvements.

Is there a complete list of DLLs somewhere that we can back up for use later? I will need to travel to my parents' to get access to a Win8.1 computer.

you could also just use a windows 8.1 deployment image (install.wim) and just get the files needed out of that using DISM or 7zip. idk thats what i'd do

tried using discord and equibop but i can't vc on either, unfortunate (no audio on discord and i can't allow access to my mic on equibop)

I am surprised to see the lack of audio in Discord as it should be similar to all other Chromium browsers in that respect. I will try and see what is going on.

Love all the work you're doing here! I wanted to ask if there are plans in the near future for back porting WiFi 6 and 6E drivers? My one big issue with trying to install Vista/7 on newer hardware is the network cards not working

I have been experimenting with Windows 10 WLAN drivers recently, although I haven't been able to get the desired results yet. But it will involve many Windows 10 system drivers replacing existing system drivers.

So quick question, is there a viable way to backport or generally use new drivers on windows 7 with this? Like newer Nvidia drivers or amd chipset drivers? I presume not but like... yeah.

Newer drivers are handled by a different process. I have experimented considerably with newer graphics drivers on Windows 7 but just abandoned one potential approach to the issue because it ultimately resulted in large portions of the system files being replaced with those from newer versions of Windows, to the point that it may have been questionable to continue to call it "Windows 7". I will regroup and adopt a new approach to this particular issue.

I've seen some reports that Second System is enabled system-wide by default, which makes me nervous to try installing it now (I have VxKex also) - Would it please be possible to make it run in whitelist mode like VxKex does, rather than (what looks like) blacklist mode?

The registry value "DefaultProfile" (REG_SZ type) can be created in HKCU\Software\LSC\SecondSystem, and it can be set to "Passive" to ensure that this happens.

I recently identified an issue in the DXGI wrapper that may affect those games. Discord is a separate issue that I am currently investigating.

So, 1: Quick question is there any like propper place to report bugs and incombatibilities? and 2: speaking of incombatibilities, Citron (a fork of the Yuzu switch emulator) doesnt work with this. It crashes with a dxgi.dll error (for some reason... it uses vulkan...) and using the d3d11 for games script just gives an ambigous crash instead.

also interestingly, i have been unable to get the python 3.8.10 app "BCML" (a mod merger for BotW) to function correctly and it seems that this version of python is bugged with second system, and even setting it to passive in regedit for the involved exe's doesnt seem to fix much of anything, it hangs on intalling mods and setting compatibility for any version of windows causes the program to not launch.

hmm, it gets weirder cause it seems its only bcml's own file format (.bnp archives) that fail to install... and .zip files spit out an error

I added all the necessary functions but there is another factor causing random init failure in Spotify. I will keep looking into it.

Looks like Citron also requires some WinRT DLLs, specifically Windows.UI.dll and Windows.UI.Immersive.dll. Those DLLs will have to be supplied from a Windows 10 system.

Is support for Windows 8.0 planned? I prefer it greatly over 8.1

Yes, when I install Windows 8.0 soon, I will be able to make it compatible with Second System.

Is there a way where you can make windows 7 games as optimized as say Windows 10? I dont get as much frames on 7 than I do with 10

There are many variables to take into account. The drivers are different (WDDM 2.x instead of 1.x with various optimizations), the runtimes are different and various kernel optimizations are added. I did bring over the 8.1 D3D11/DXGI to allow users to use a different runtime. Graphics drivers are a different story for the most part (but I was able to substitute the OpenGL/Vulkan runtime in the 474.44 NVIDIA Windows Vista/7/8.x driver with the Windows 10 version successfully; I'm working on versions from newer drivers to see if newer Vulkan support can be added).

Hello! Installing messes with my indexing (can't search and have to rebuild). Steam shows some changes, but I can't launch any games. Also do you know if it's possible to get the latest Redist from Steam, as this functionally locks you out from playing a large amount of games (their update hangs on a certain %). I'm on Windows 7, using on a per-application basis.

Which errors occur in Steam? Or are there no visible errors when trying to launch games?

Game seemingly launches, but later the "stop" button reverses to "play".

Also, rebuilding index does not work. No search functionality in windows after install.

Which Windows update level are you on? I usually test Windows 7 against February 2022 updates and there are no problems with searching or indexing.

As far as I can tell I'm on Jan 2020. How to correct?

I just built a configuration with January 2020 updates and indexing/search works normally. Do any error messages appear when attempting to search or index?

Windows cannot find 'search:query=X' Make sure you typed .. etc. Index works normally after uninstalling.

Since you only use Second System on a per-application basis, try deleting the registry value "Shell" from HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon, log off and log on and see if there are changes in the searching capabilites.

That restores search functionality. Value of key prior to deletion: "C:\Users\USERX\AppData\Local\SecondSystem\secondsystem.exe Shell C:\Windows\explorer.exe" Any news on steam functionality? Running in Win11 compatability removes the "will stop working" banner, but I can't run any games, even ones that worked prior to install go from "play" to "cancel" to "stop" to "play" again without launching.

Hi! Will Qt6 applications, such as qBittorrent, be fixed? The program crashes at startup with "qBittorrent.exe has stopped working" Interesting thing: if I compile Qt6 through MinGW (or clang), qBittorrent starts working: https://postimg.cc/PCx0jSZq . But, it needs qBittorrent folders in %appdata% and %localappdata% created previously on Win10 or VxKex in Windows 7, so I'm using PortableApps launcher to make it work on another Win7 and Win8.1 PCs.

Yes, my intent is to fix the remaining Qt 6 applications soon. PCSX2 however may take longer because of some modern memory API issues.
