This new release of Second System extends support to Windows 8.0, 10 and 11 (pre-24H2). Windows 8.0 support (both release and some pre-release builds*) was added by popular demand. Windows 10 and 11 support is largely for comparative testing purposes, but with a view to resolving future compatibility issues that will face those operating systems in the future and backporting shell elements from earlier versions of Windows to replace their bug-ridden modern counterparts. There are also various improvements targetting specific applications on all platforms:-dnsapi Windows 10 function stubs have been added, but there are still varying issues with the target application (the Spotify desktop application).-cfgmgr32 issues have been corrected, which should improve BeamNG.drive compatibility on Windows 8.1.-Application exclusions have been added for the DPI scaling application and all search indexing executables after reports of issues involving all of them.-Application compatibility shims are now disabled when Second System is activated on a given application, after various conflicts occurred between the two.-"Disable Second System" (or "Passive" mode) no longer loads the ntdll stub into the target application. This should eliminate any compatibility issues resulting from applications aggressively patching import tables or using DRM methods that reject the ntdll stub.-Windows.UI.dll is now part of Second System. This improves compatibility with some Qt 6 applications, such as QBitTorrent. However, QBitTorrent utilizes newer DXGI extensions and requires Enhanced D3D11 Mode to run.-Various issues with Git and Python applications (specifically generative AI applications such as ComfyUI) have been corrected on Windows 7 and below.-The D3D11 Enhancement Pack is now compatible with Windows 8.0, in addition to Windows Vista and Windows 7. It is not required on Windows 8.1 and above.

Future usage of Windows 10 DLLs

In the vein of the D3D11 Enhancement Pack that transplants DXGI and D3D11 from Windows 8.1, there are strong indications that further ports of DLLs from Windows 10 may be required to achieve the full quantum of application compatibility on Windows NT 6.x. This includes:

Spotify desktop application

Microsoft Teams desktop application

Google Chrome installer

Rockstar Games Launcher

Visual Studio 2026 IDE (it is possible to use the compilers and linkers with a considerably older version of the IDE, such as 2008 or 2010)

*specifically, build 8102. Warning: copy your MSVC++ 2015-22/2017-26 redist DLLs from a Windows 7 installation.Updated 2025-12-07 at 0035 (UTC-5) for a minor change to the Windows 8.0, 8.1 and 10/11 packages to accomodate new DLL dependencies in Chromium 143 and up. And updated again only 27 minutes later after discovering a small issue in the UWP text scaling factor.

Is there a list of DLLs included that we need to use Second System?

win32

The only external DLLs that are currently required are those referenced in the D3D11 Enhancement Pack (and if the targetted programs are not used, then none). Aside from that and the MSVC 2015-22 runtime, I am not aware of any others.

Beamng works like a charm! My chrome browser still crashes due to gpu acceleration (rtx 2060) but everything else (steam, beamng etc..) works amazing. really close to an awesome release

Jaguarek62

I fixed my chrome crashing by doing this: "C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --no-sandbox --disable-gpu-process-crash-limit --disable-direct-composition-video-overlays --disable-direct-composition --disable-gpu-process-for-dx12-info-collection --disable-accelerated-video-decode

Hello! Can uxtheme.dll wrapper with "OpenThemeDataForDpi" function be added in the future? Cubase 14 and a lot of plugins needs that

MR.NASSER

This is really good, keep it up, I support you, and thank you for making it work on Windows Vista

How did you get firefox to work? I installed the latest versions of both the offline and online installers and they both said I needed to be on Windows 10. I'm on Windows 7. I also tried to click Windows 10 compatibility on the context menu and still nothing. I'm probably doing something wrong. And also how did you get the nt version in winver to change? i'm guessing that's why it's not working for me. Sorry it's my first time using this.

Make sure that there are registry values in the key HKCU\Software\LSC\SecondSystem\DefaultConfig_Modulex64, as well asHKCU\Software\LSC\SecondSystem\DefaultConfig_Config.

2LENSFLARE4U

I do not see DefaultConfig_Modulex64 and DefaultConfig_Config on my registry. When I create them, what should the values inside them be? Should I create them as a string value or DWORD 32bit value? Thanks again.

win32

Seems like you ran the installer but somehow the .reg file in the installer package did not applied. That includes all the DLL and version definitions.

2LENSFLARE4U

Thank you so much. I ran the included .reg file in the installer for second system. It now shows 10.0 on winver. But how can I tell which programs are supported? Is it just trial and error? Thanks.

I'm in the process of building a uxtheme wrapper and ensuring its compatibility with all target systems. It will also be capable of replacing specific bitmaps and backgrounds for shell replacements expecting older uxthemes.

Hey! Thanks so much for your continued development on this. Do you happen to know if the modified Nvidia drivers from Windows Vista Extended Kernel work with Second System on Vista?

win32

Yes, they should work.

Is there a theme to make the latest firefox work with windows aero on windows 7? I also notice that the minimize expand and close buttons are squared?

win32

The Second System manual contains solutions to both problems, although the Aero restoration method will not be the same UI as you may be used to.

Unfortunately, you will have to send a crash dump to me to figure out the cause of this issue, as Cubase 14 has significant issues with my Xeon E5-2690 system. The crash dumps can be created by creating the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\LocalDumps and they will be written to %LOCALAPPDATA%\CrashDumps upon running of the application.
