A new release of Second System has been made, and it contains some big new features, including Windows 8-style toast notifications on Windows Vista and 7, plus native Direct3D 12 support on Windows Vista, 7 and 8.x, for those on the latest graphics drivers available for those systems. The DXGI and D3D11 extensions support more Windows 10-level functionality than before as well.Furthermore, some new applications run, including the latest versions of PCSX2 (with one small configuration change needed upon launch - which is specified in the manual) and DuckStation. The reliability of some CEF applications including the Steam client has also been improved; in particular, Windows Vista systems that needed to launch Steam through a command prompt will no longer need to do so.The Windows 10 spoof now identifies the system as 10.0.19044 (22H2), which should help compatibility with applications expecting later versions of Windows 10.The uninstaller now provides an option to retain all application preferences and any custom compatibility profiles to be reused in future installations. An external DLL catalog is now available to inform users of all the third-party DLLs that have been tested with Second System and can be used to further enhance compatibility.D3DCompiler_47.dll has been removed due to redundancy.A wrapper around bcrypt.dll has been added, as well as a wrapper around webservices.dll on Windows 7 to circumvent the DLL's requirement of only loading on systems with a MinorVersion of 1.Download this new release here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/second-system-2-149848692?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=postshare_creator&utm_content=join_link

I notice the latest version of firefox crashes for me? I set the compatibility mode to Windows 10 and 11 and the installers says firefox is not responding? Whats wrong

win32

Which Windows version is it running on?

2LENSFLARE4U

Windows 7 with 2020-01 patches

win32

I have now updated the packages with some new functions to run Firefox 147.0.3.

Jaguarek62

what is the recommended way of upgrading second system? Cause whenever i don't do a uninstall and install it again, everything is broken

Jaguarek62

also firefox is crashing for me as well on 8.1

win32

It is recommended to uninstall, log out (or reboot) and then install again. This allows all files to be properly replaced because applications will "lock" them, even if they don't appear to be used.

win32

I have identified and fixed the Firefox issue. Please try the latest update.

Many games that work on Windows 7 or 8.1 don't work on Vista even with the current version of Second System.

Jaguarek62

Could you help me? Rocket league is working fine with second system 2.3, but gives communication error 0 on 2.4, any idea?

win32

What happens if wd311.dll and dxgw.dll are replaced with their 2.3 equivalents? And if not that, how about replacing pwrs_k32.dll with its 2.3 version (but in system32)? This should help identify the location of the problem.

I see that firefox is still crashing when updating via the link provided. I tried uninstalling completely and restarting, then reinstalling using the newer update and logged off and back on and still.

win32

Did you download Second System before 1700 UTC on February 4? After I released that version to deal with the issue you reported, another user reported a different issue affecting Firefox, which was corrected at that point. From this point, I have not detected any further issues.

I also have an issue with games not displaying anything but a black screen with a cursor after upgrading to second system 2.4. Replacing dxgw and wd311 with their 2.3 counterparts makes games display again. The games I tried are 2236 A.D., Persona 5 Royal and Soul Hackers 2. 2236 A.D. works perfectly, like in 2.3 after the replacement. Persona 5 crashes with a d3d11.dll error on 2.3 and after the replacement on 2.4, but on 2.3 it plays a bit of the intro cinematic if I use dxvk instead, then crashes with no error. On 2.4 I also need to replace pwrs_k32 to restore 2.3 dxvk behaviour. Soul Hackers 2 plays a bit of the intro cinematic then crashes with a GameAssembly.dll error, but on 2.3 with dxvk it crashes at the title screen instead with a GameAssembly.dll error. On 2.4 it still crashes at the same point even with dxvk and replacing pwrs_k32 does not restore 2.3 behaviour. I am on windows 8.1 with I think August 2025 updates. Also with second system 2.4 launching steam happens in a "Not Responding" state, then steam web helper has to crash two times before it finally loads normally. In 2.3 it launched first time. Also, when launching steam gldriverquery.exe crashes every time I launch it. I don't think it affects functionality too much but maybe that's why steam disables hardware acceleration for me.

Jaguarek62

Neither of them did nothing, it still throws error 0, you fixed discord though.

Jaguarek62

Glgdriverquery is fixable by downloading and placing SDL2.dll into steam folder, but hw acceleration wil not work after that also

win32

I was able to run it to some extent on my system after some changes to DXGI, but was ultimately limited by a lack of AVX support which was more than my emulator could handle.

win32

I was able to test 2236 A.D. and Persona 5 Royal (before running out of emulated AVX instructions). My updated D3D11 and DXGI wrappers should handle those games.

Luca Dima

After updating to 2.4.1, 2236A.D. works perfectly. Persona now launches without dxvk, but it still crashes with no error. Soul Hackers still crashes, but it also now launches properly. I'm on a 14th gen intel system so there shouldn't be instruction set issues. I'm curious though what system you're running that you need to emulate avx and what you're using to accomplish that.

Responding to Anotyx's comment (which was hidden by a comment filter I didn't know about and also prevents me from replying to it directly despite disabling the filter) - I will have to look at pehdr-lite. I haven't encountered such an issue on anything else. I don't think it is feasible to disable Second System on child processes, especially when they are usually missing various dependencies and thus need it to run. I am taking steps to increase browser reliability, although I was certain that it was very high outside of the recent D3D11/DXGI changes that are currently being revised. Unfortunately, Spotify remains a very unpredictible application, on Windows 8.1 specifically, often crashing after closing a . I'm not sure of its status on Windows 7 other than that several WinRT DLLs are used. As for Discord's audio support, there is a requirement to use various WASAPI interfaces that were introduced in Windows 10 or later. I hope to extend WASAPI eventually.

Hey, quick apology. The permission issue was caused by AeLookupSvc being disabled.
