This release includes further improvements to the process creation mechanism to avoid remaining DLL errors from processes using custom PATH environment variables, especially on Windows 8.1. GIMP and Adobe installers were the main casualties of this issue. The D3D11, DXGI and D3D12 wrapper have also been improved with better support for newer D3D11 interfaces introduced in Windows 10. The D3D12 wrapper will now be disabled on games that use Unreal Engine due to various complications that could not be resolved in time. As some newer games do not have a toggle between different renderers, forcing D3D12 to fail is the best way to handle the situation at this time. Games such as Rocket League will also fallback to native DXGI interfaces because of issues found while testing on Windows Vista.Firefox sandboxes on very high hardening levels should work again on Windows 8.1 after the changes to the DXGI wrapper.New kernel32 functions have been added to support the latest GIMP installer and Epic Games client (which still needs its MSI installer to be patched using a tool such as Orca or InstEd to remove its "LaunchCondition" table).

Updated at 0124 (UTC -5) on 2026-02-12 to make various revisions to D3D11 and DXGI to improve compatibility with Firefox and Chrome, especially on Windows 8.1.

awesome as always!

Thank you, I have to share my experience. There was no issue launching rocket league, but the game is not communicating with epic online services, that still persists, also chrome is no longer launching. https://snipboard.io/LQbUlR.jpg -> chrome not launching

Jaguarek62

Rocket league error -> https://snipboard.io/thp7b1.jpg second system 2.3 has been so stable btw, chrome, steam, games.. everything is rock solid including netflix. I finally can use 8.1 as main again, but I can't upgrade to a newer version cause it immediately breaks, chrome, rocket league, mafia 2 and some other games

win32

I was able to remote into another 8.1 user's system and correct all of the Chrome issues resulting from the updates to D3D11 and DXGI. Although the network issues are still quite far removed from that - maybe it is the spoof being changed from 10240 to 19044, which can be changed by setting BuildNumber in HKCU\Software\LSC\SecondSystem\DefaultConfig_Config. I should be able to run Windows 8.1 on AVX2-supporting hardware with discrete graphics soon, which should make it easier to test newer games and the like.

Jaguarek62

chrome is working again and rocket league is working too, though exclusively with windows 8.1 config, not 7 not 10

Are you planning to fix cs2? It runs natively without secondsystem, but if launched through steam, no matter if eazyblacks or native, if secondsystem is installed, it won't launch. It has been reported by other users on discord aswell.

win32

Make sure that CS2 is run through Second System. If not, then it will not work as the Steam Client is unable to patch a game using a different kernel32 from the client itself when launching. But if CS2 itself does not work for other reasons, I will be able to work on it, as long as it doesn't require AVX2. I am in the process of further correcting DXGI if that is causing problems as well in response to performance issues with the Windows 8.1 D3D11 runtime when used on Windows 7.

Uhh, I installed it, and now Windows Vista throws a “windows explorer has stopped working” error and shows a black screen after logging in :D.

Owen Bezanson

After using ctrl + alt + delete and using task manager to run explorer, it has restored my desktop. I’m interested to see if you’ll be able to replicate this

Owen Bezanson

Also, when attempting to run software with compatibility, it does a whole lot of nothing other than cause my fans to have a field day

win32

Which updating level is your copy of Vista at?

Owen Bezanson

SP2 + every update known to man that legacy update and windows update would find and install + the server 2008 update that enables Sha2 support. I also have the final version of your previous extended kernel project installed.

In the meantime, if you use EazyBlack steam backport, you can switch SecondSystem to a per app basis (check the PDF guide)

Hi! What Windows 7 update level is recommended for maximum stability? On 2025 updates Chromium browsers don't work. Also qBittorrent don't work too.

win32

Unfortunately, some extended kernel releases do not work very well with Second System. If the extended kernel cannot be removed, then I can ensure that co-existence is possible between the extended kernel and Second System.

win32

Second System is tested primarily on the March 2022 update level.

Owen Bezanson

If I remember correctly your Extended Kernel does have an uninstaller (you would know yourself) so I’ll just run that an see what happens. I didn’t recall seeing anything on your page about incompatibilities (although I suppose you might assume it would be the case), but dumb warning labels are written in blood :P. (Or in this case, an improperly working OS) Perhaps have a tool baked into the installer that checks if the former extended kernel is installed, and if it is throws a warning, and gives the option to cancel or uninstall extended kernel. Just my thoughts though. Despite my initial hiccups I’m very excited to give it a try.

win32

There is an uninstaller (which is the press 'R' to restore (the original files) option in the installer), but some pre-made installation media made by other parties removes the backup DLLs that are used by the uninstaller to restore the previous state. But the extended kernel is structured in a way that its major parts can be detected (specifically, kernel32.dll wrappers) and any issues can be worked around that way.

Even with the latest update of Second System, firefox still isn't working for me. I've tried both web and msi installers. I do remember seeing it work on previous releases.

Owen Bezanson

Yeah I didn’t use any pre-updated ISOs, I started with a SP2 RTM, so it’ll give it a try and report back.

win32

Are any exception errors generated when trying to run Firefox? If so, create the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\LocalDumps registry key to produce crash dumps that can help resolve this issue (normally present in %LOCALAPPDATA%\CrashDumps). Also make sure that Second System was fully uninstalled before upgrading.

kb971512, kb2117917, kb4474419-v4 - is this enough for Second System?

Owen Bezanson

alright, I finally got around to messing with it again. Restoring the windows directory did indeed fix the issue, it did have to reboot twice before it starting working properly.

TSNH

I would also install PlatformUpdate related KB960362, KB971512, KB971513, KB971514, KB2117917 (you mentioned this one) Probably also kb2864202 (USB), KB975823 (SD) KB4019276 (TLS) KB4493730 (servicing stack) than kb4474419-v4 KB4019478 (d3dcompiler47), I use a pre-integrated installation iso, so I don't know if more are needed, perhaps those that you mentioned are enough, but you may be missing other updates related to compatibility

This is the exact issue that my mshtml.dll wrapper in Second System 2.4.2 should take care of.

2LENSFLARE4U

I fully uninstalled 2.4.1 and installed 2.4.2 and it still crashes. I tried rebooting and logging off to apply the changes
