This release of Second System ensures continued updating of Chrome 155+ on Windows Vista and 7, while ensuring stability for higher-memory activities including 1440p+ YouTube viewing.A small issue with the Second System utility (ssutil.exe) has also been corrected, where it may fail to directly launch processes on account of subsystem version on some systems.Second System is also starting to recognize AppX packages, in preparation for XAML/UWP/Windows App Runtime support, which is being held up by extensive changes to various graphics libraries currently in progress.

Updated on 2026-10-18 (2206 UTC-4) to fix an issue with Spotify caused by triggering an internal assumption that it was running in an AppX package, even when it was not.Updated on 2026-10-22 (0422 UTC-4) to fix an issue that prevented usage of cl.exe in the latest version Visual Studio 2026 on Windows 7 and below, and restored PDF viewing in the latest Chromium sandboxes on Windows 7 and below.

I'm new to this, but I ran installsecondsystem, I get a cmd prompt, but then it goes away. I'm running Vista SP2.

win32

Open up an elevated command prompt (right click "run as administrator"), point it to the Second System installation directory, type in "internal.cmd" and tell me what it spits out.

Fusion123

In short ran instalsecondsystem via cmd, got error. Tried internal.cmd and that looked to work. Now get explorer.exe crash at boot, have to "run" to get it working.

Fusion123

I removed second system to start fresh. Ran internal.cmd and get: Enter Path to install second system. Click Enter, then get "The system cannot find the path specified", still looks to install. At reboot have to manually open explorer.exe

win32

Is there a directory at %LOCALAPPDATA%\SecondSystem? Is there an x64 subdirectory with pwrs_k32.dll and ntdlx.dll?

Tomasz Dyńka

Yeah UWP support while CI Patcher still doesn't support 1507 correctly.

Fusion123

After installing via internal.cmd, the folder is in local with stuff in it. I see both files now in x64 folder. On reboot get: Windows Explorer has stopped working, get it back using run: explorer.exe

Tomasz Dyńka

Thank you bro, finally I can come on with my modded drivers and other experiments.

win32

Were any updates installed on the system? Was it from official SP2 media from 2009? Or was it an updated one from say, 2020 or 2026?

UWP would be crazy to pull off. Very interested in how it goes. I would also want to suggest adding a profile that just fixes SSL errors, without having to apply a full compatibility mode.

Any update on dx11 improvements on Vista and 7?

win32

I don't think I can do anything more until a new dxgkrnl is completed. For Vista there is the option of using the Windows 8.1 D3D11 and DXGI (explained in an earlier article), however it hasn't worked very well on Windows 7 so far.

win32

It would have to be equivalent to the "Shell" mode in terms of other DLL replacements to be properly applied. Would this be for IE or other older applications?

ben0258

Mostly for IE and things that use its engine. For example, Windows Live Mail won't sync RSS feeds served over HTTPS unless I enable Second System for it.

WindowsDefender

Hey could it's also be possible to fix Beamng and Spotify in your next release please? For spotify the app try to launch if i double click on it but nothing happend and immediatly close, a process appear in the task Manager, for Beamng if i try to launch with directx11 i have the error : FATAL ERROR: The GPU is not responding. This might happen due to using an incompatible or an old version of GPU drivers, old versions of Windows Update, screen recording functionality, or other reasons. BeamNG.drive has experienced a fatal error. Clicking on OK will close BeamNG and create a crashreport. Please send the report so we can resolve this problem. With vulkan it's just crash, and with Directx12 is throw the error 0x0000001, while with vxkex it's work fine with Directx11 without any issues, i have a Gtx 1660ti (laptop) i7 9750h and 16gb of ram

win32

Is this Windows 7? And is VxKex installed on the same system as Second System?

win32

The Spotify issue should now be fixed.

WindowsDefender

Yes it's windows 7 x64, and i vxkex isn't present on my system, also one another smaller issue that i noticed is with Prism Launcher, i'm still not able to connect with my microsoft account. But thanks you very much for fixing spotify, it's perfectly working now. It's also appearing that any graphics backend in the dolphin emulator (Directx11, Directx12, Vulkan and Opengl), typically i usually use Vulkan, and if i try to open any game it's throwing me the error "Failed to create Vulkan instance."

Артем Пономарев

Hi. While using the Second System, I encountered the following issues: 1) PDF viewing does not work in Chromium-based browsers. 2) Firefox automatic updates are broken (the browser opens first, then the update window appears). 3) Visual Studio 2026's compiler (cl.exe) incorrectly processes paths to include files on Windows 7 (for example, "../.." causes a "No such file or directory" error).

win32

The first issue was also identified in Supermium. It is a conflict in the sandbox which should be fixed soon (on Second System's end for all other browsers). I observed the issue in Firefox 154 and 155, but Firefox 156 and up appear to be updating normally, before I could fix it. The cl issue sounds like a problem in one of the newer path functions in my kernel32 wrapper. I will resolve it.

Davide Pompili

Is it possible to run Steam on Windows Vista with SecondSystem?

Davide Pompili

I can't launch games because SteamService.exe isn't working and I get the error "The procedure entry point GetLogicalProcessorInformationEx could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll."

win32

I have been able to use Steam and run even newer VAC-protected games without its service on my end, oddly enough, however here is an experimental fix for the service. If it works, then I will automate the process within Second System itself. Apply the registry key, then copy "SteamServiceTmp.exe.local" directory to your Steam directory, and then copy "SteamService.exe.local" directory to the "bin" subdirectory within the Steam directory. kernel32.dll from the Windows\SysWoW64 directory will have to be copied to each directory and renamed to kernel33.dll. A reboot will be needed for the registry key to take effect and this fix to work. https://mega.nz/file/8lVxkJSQ#gQeGqgOmdzR_y7phK85zBO0ixwP869oacXNto0Cp5-s

Garin Emerick

I tried it myself on a VM (using VMware Workstation Pro), and it doesn't seem to fix it. I am using the 3.3 version as well, I'm using Vista.

Josiah Manly

For my vista system, it seemed once i installed it, it completely broke my entire pc, the explorer doesn’t even run normally now at all, even after a few restarts. Any way to fix this?

Josiah Manly

Nevermind, after manually putting explorer.exe in task manager and running it, it seems to work okay now.

win32

If Explorer fails to launch, you can Ctrl-Alt-Del, open Task Manager and then run explorer through the run dialog under "File". Are you running Vista SP2, and is it at build 6002 or 6003?

win32

It turns out that Steam also copies both SteamService and SteamServiceExp to Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Steam, so the *.exe.local directories also need to be copied there.

Josiah Manly

Its at 6003...dont think it installed correctly though.

win32

In %LOCALAPPDATA%\SecondSystem\x64, are pwrs_k32.dll and ntdlx.dll present? What happens if you attempt to use the "Second System Config" option in the right-click context menu to launch another application?

Josiah Manly

What does happen, is that you try using default config, and it appears to basically do nothing, shows nothing when you run it. Secondsystem doesn't even seem to be there at all. Even though i installed it normally.

win32

So the DLLs in question are missing? In that event, you can copy over the contents of the "x64" and "x86" directories in the installation package to the location of the Second System install.

Josiah Manly

Wait hang on it IS there and the dlls in question are also there, it's just that nothing happens when trying to load stuff on vista, it just, buffers, then does nothing.

jsr_Games

Getting a pretty bad error with Windows 7. It won't start Explorer because of ntdlx.dll. I can start it manually, though.

jsr_Games

I'm getting the same issue on Windows 7, and yes, both DLLs are present. "Internal" says "C:\Users\(redacted)\AppData\Local\SecondSystem". That said, it also asks me if I want to run each individual EXE file. Not sure why.

Josiah Manly

Oh wow, i remember you. You did zetafone stuff a while back right? And yeah, same issue here.

win32

Has it been copied to system32 (if VxKex is present)?

jsr_Games

That's correct! Never thought I'd run into a fellow viewer here.

jsr_Games

I went and uninstalled VxKex and installed Second System. Now Explorer launches, though I noticed an error message saying "steam webhelper has stopped working". It still opened though, which is strange...

win32

Does that error reference a specific DLL and/or error code (such as 0xc0000005)?

jsr_Games

The DLL is bcrypt.dll, the error code is the exact same as what you posted. (Edit to mention that I also made a restore point, just in case things go horribly awry.)

Josiah Manly

Yeah, im BIG on computer stuff now lol, used to love cellphones until all of it got ruined. So now I use laptops

Garin Emerick

I had to delete my previous comment due to not reading what you had said right, I'm getting extremely confused because you were saying SteamServiceExp instead of Tmp, so I don't know if that's a typo?? Could you provide us a link to the now updated version of the SteamServiceTest MEGA file again, and then maybe I can figure it out?

win32

I am very sorry. I did mean to say "SteamServiceTmp". So copy both "SteamServiceTmp.exe.local" and "SteamService.exe.local" to X:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Common Files (where X: is the drive that contains your Program Files directory). kernel32.dll from the Windows\SysWoW64 directory will have to be copied to each directory and renamed to kernel33.dll, without touching the kernel32.dll that is in there already (which is actually a renamed pwrs_k32.dll - I can't redistribute the original kernel32.dll). https://mega.nz/file/8lVxkJSQ#gQeGqgOmdzR_y7phK85zBO0ixwP869oacXNto0Cp5-s

Garin Emerick

It actually worked like a charm!!! Although Windows Vista however when I had to install some VC Redist for the game itself, then it had launched but it is not open in the foreground and it is just a background process. So I then end it and it says blockland.exe has stopped working, so I don't know how to fix that. Is there any way where this app can launch through the Steam client that you know of? Because for example it shows this: https://imgur.com/8wm4xEd

Shaza Salloum

Will it work on Windows XP in the future?

win32

Not in its full form. Some DLLs could be used but it will never be as capable as it is on Vista and above.

win32

Is a file offset referenced in the error? If it is what I think it is, then it should be easily fixable.

Connor Matthews

I got latest Chrome to install with SecondSystem, and it ran completely fine for the first launch. Now it opens to a white window. Is there some launch flag I'm missing? Weird that it worked once. 🤔 Installed from clean Vista SP2 media and then did all updates available through Legacy Update and then manually installed Visual C++ 2005 through 2015-2022, DirectX updates, and .NET Framework 3.5 & 4.5.2.

win32

Try to launch with --use-angle=gl or --no-sandbox. Does the GPU support D3D11 with feature level 11_0 or above?

jsr_Games

Sorry, I actually had to uninstall it. Audacity was unable to detect my audio devices while Second System was installed. EDIT: It just said "Internal PortAudio Error".

Connor Matthews

Intel HD Graphics 3000. So DirectX 11 but capped at feature level 10_1. Launch argument worked though, thanks ❤️

Shaza Salloum

Do you know how to fix "Failed to launch process with error123"

win32

By any chance, is the process located on a network drive? (the error indicates that the executable path itself could not be found, and there shouldn't be a problem on standard hard disk volumes or optical media)

Firat Acur

I wanna use Second System on Windows 10 LTSB 2016, especially for running Spotify (anything above 1.2.10 crashes). However, on this version of Windows, it still gives the "SetThreatDescription" Error with Second System 3.3.Any fixes planned? It works on 7 and 8.1 tho

win32

That is surprising. I think that function should be available by 1607. I do intend to support Second System formally on all LTSB/LTSC releases of Windows 10 as well as 22H2, starting with version 3.4.

J

Installed on Win7 that is fully updated with Simplix UpdatePack 7 26.1.15 and has ESET Smart Security 16.0.28.0 installed still under a valid license (the last supported version). Breaks module and definition updates which still updates with pre-release updates selected in advanced setup. It possibly makes ESET think to download modules for windows Version 10 as seen in winver after installation. I would need to remove second system to update ESET successfully. Also tried Stacher 7 with different launch options but was not able to get it to work. Also have a policy set to block use of all powershell so it made installation interesting.

win32

A possible solution would be to disable Second System on every executable known to be associated with the application. However, this appears to be a recurring theme with security software - it may take some time to resolve.

jsr_Games

I am curious now. Is there a way to request certain apps? Because while Steam itself works, SteamServices.exe does not, which is required to get a lot of games working...

win32

I have a temporary solution for SteamService.exe, which is defined in the replies to the question "Is it possible to run Steam on Windows Vista with SecondSystem?". However, various games, mostly 32 bit, seem to not work regardless of the service working or not. I see that HL2 is one, Railroad Tycoon 3 is another and most of the ones that work have no DRM or Steam API usage (which isn't as much of a factor for 64 bit games).

win32

Just confirmed that the Steam service is also having bcrypt problems. Until now I thought it was only the main client itself! Now making some changes...

Passerby

By any chance could Discord work on Windows 7? The application for updating/starting Discord seems to start and then immediately stop. Maybe a CPU/performance issue or something else? And by any chance will this be fixed in the next few updates if any of the launch flags don't work?

Passerby

Update: It may definitely be me not having .NET Framework 4.5 or higher installed on Windows 7. I had .NET Framework 4.8 installed on an HP Elitebook 8440p laptop and it runs flawlessly there.

Passerby

Update 2: Okay, maybe it is a performance issue. One of my laptops is an Elitebook 6930p with a Core 2 Duo P8700 and another is an Elitebook 8440p with a Core i5, both 2.53GHz. The 6930p's the only one with the "start and stop" issue-- Even VMware doesn't have this issue. Will there be an update to Second System that addresses these performance issues?
