As new features are still being worked for the next version of Second System, users reported various issues that should be corrected for this intermediate release:-LINE installer not working on Windows 8.1 and below-Various issues with 32 bit Steam games that require Steam API or DRM-A crash of the Steam client when launching Tropico 4-TLS 1.3 not being enabled for .NET Framework applications including Bluebeam Revu 21.x; however Bluebeam sign-in will not be possible on the very latest release until an additional module is implemented-An issue preventing the launch of Audacity 4And in addition to these fixes, there is a temporary solution for Windows Vista users who want the Steam service to be running (although it doesn't seem to be required for most games, even those using Steam API). Run the registry key file, reboot and then copy the included SteamService.exe.local and SteamServiceTmp.exe.local directories to: Program Files (x86)\Steam, Program Files (x86)\Steam\bin and Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Steam. Due to redistribution policies, two system DLLs must be copied to each of the folders: kernel32.dll and bcrypt.dll, both from SysWOW64. They must not overwrite the existing instances of each DLL; instead they should be renamed to kernel33.dll and bcryp1.dll respectively.

Just asking, but when will we ever see a replacement for OCAPI or One Core API Binaries, like a Second System for Windows XP? Will this even happen, or is this not planned? I haven't seen any comments or posts about regarding this.

Hi. I noticed some bugs in the Second System: 1) When I needed to launch the new version of Steinberg Library Manager, the application crashed at startup. It turned out that it needed IUISettings3 to work. I implemented this in my own .dll file and registered it in the RoActivationFactories (Windows.UI.ViewManagement.UISettings), after which the program started. 2) The same program breaks with dwrit1.dll. When I switched to Win10NoDWrite config, I noticed that if the program is run with administrator rights, SecondSystem automatically launches it with Win11Config. Only manual launch via command line helped. 3) pwp_shs.dll broke the folder selection window in Explorer (in Cubase 14). There was no text in the "New Folder" button and interface was broken. 4) Steinberg Activation Manager (Qt6 app) does not open the web browser when you click on "Sign In" button. The problem was solved by using VxKex NEXT for this program. My OS is Windows 8.1 with 2025 updates

I'm on Windows 8.1. Dragging and dropping items on Spotify (latest version, and other more recent versions I tried) can sometimes cause the application to crash. This is a relatively minor bug, but it makes shuffling items in the queue impossible. Otherwise, my experience with your software has been incredibly positive - thank you for such great work.

Hey, can someone help me with knowing why every time I open up the Install SecondSystem CMD command on Vista it will literally auto-close and I cannot install it for some reason? Thank you.

win32

I believe there is some rogue install media out there with Powershell removed which may cause this issue. What happens if you run "internal.cmd" with administrator privileges? I

win32

Some of the alternative Second System deployment methods (including the one used for the Steam Service) do work on Windows XP, however I don't expect it to be as capable as on Vista and above.

Garin Emerick

Okay so I actually tried doing that exact thing but this is all I see whenever I do the internal.cmd command instead. It will only give me Second System Disabled... ALSO I just was going to attach the screenshot of what I saw, and it turns out after restarting it and having explorer.exe not boot up, I did CTRL ALT DEL and ran the new explorer.exe process with success, and now the Second System shows all of its menus. I don't know why that happened..

win32

Second System's windows.ui.dll/windows.u8.dll does support IUISettings up to 6. However I was not aware of any third-party application that needed the later iterations yet so it was only enabled for Windows Vista and 7. I am also working on addressing the shortcomings of DirectWriteCore (dwrit1) and making it work in cases where it had problems, including with Adobe/WinUI/D2D1 interop applications. The web browser should be opened with Windows.System.Launcher in windows.ui.dll/windows.u8.dll, as with Spotify sign in. I will have to see why it does not work with Steinberg Activation Manager (and see why the shell dialogs are breaking).

Garin Emerick

I also realized that some reason that Vista got messed up after I tried Second System 3.3.5, so I uninstalled that and it now can start explorer.exe without crashing after login.

Garin Emerick

And after reinstalling just to see what'd happen, I found out whenever I log off, it will do the bug about showing the thing in the menu when I re-log back on. Also sorry for the two other messages, if it was kinda spammy.

win32

So the installer was unable to write its registry entries. I will add a safeguard for this possibility.

Garin Emerick

Thanks! Let me know when you may upload the fix here.

I also found out the reason for the failure of Cubase 15. It needs ID2D1Device2 and ID2D1DeviceContext2 to work. Will D2D1 Warpper be added to SecondSystem?

Артем Пономарев

Also, I don't know why, but Cubase 15 (and 14) detect VST3 plugins as Arm64_ec architecture and block them. And I've noticed one thing about the VS2026 linker, it doesn't work with the /INCREMENTAL flag (also on Win 8.1)

Артем Пономарев

I found the reason why shell dialogs break: pwp_shs.dll doesn't have a resource catalog, which is why empty buttons appear.

There is already one for resolving missing exports on Windows Vista and 7, but it will be expanded to include newer interfaces for Windows 8.x as well.

Hi! I'm experiencing a strange issue with GPU hardware acceleration on Windows 8.1. Whenever hardware acceleration is enabled in Chromium/CEF-based applications, they become partially or completely unusable. **Symptoms:** - **Google Chrome:** Opens, but only displays a blank white window. - **Discord:** Doesn't launch properly at all. - **Steam:** Opens, but the interface is completely black. - **GPU acceleration disabled:** The affected applications work normally. **System specifications:** - **OS:** Windows 8.1 x64 (Build 9600), fully updated through June 2025 - **CPU:** AMD Ryzen 7 5800X (8 cores / 16 threads) - **RAM:** 32 GB DDR4-3200 - **GPU:** NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 12 GB - **NVIDIA Driver:** 474.11 Since multiple Chromium/CEF-based applications are affected, I suspect the issue might be related to the GPU driver, ANGLE, Direct3D, or the graphics initialization process rather than any specific application. Has anyone experienced something similar on Windows 8.1, particularly with NVIDIA GPUs? Are there any known workarounds that would allow me to keep hardware acceleration enabled? I'd prefer to fix the underlying issue rather than permanently disable GPU acceleration. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! PS: Firefox works perfectly fine with hardware acceleration enabled. The issue appears to be exclusive to Chromium/CEF-based applications.

Will you make a version for Windows 8 and how do I install this?

Jaguarek62

There is Windows 8 and 8.1 version of second system.

win32

Try launching the browsers in the command prompt with the switches --no-sandbox --enable-logging. This should show any error codes that may occur when creating the D3D11/DXGI objects. But 8.1 + DXGI/D3D11 extensions + Chromium have been quite tricky for Second System. I will make some more adjustments and try to fix them again.

I have a laptop (Dell inspiron 1720) running windows vista 32x and i seem to be getting an error that looks like SecondSystem is for 64x systems only. Did i install it wrong or is it not for 32x? Works great on my Windows 7 and 8.1 systems (both 64x)

win32

Second System is only for x64 Windows.

CaptainForgee

is there any plans for 32x support or no?

Davide Pompili

Is it possible to run UWP apps on Windows Vista with Second System?

win32

Not yet. It will be a gradual process, but I am working on it (AppX win32 applications, then WinUI applications and finally, UWP applications).

win32

It will be the same as any support for pre-Vista versions, which should be possible soon. But it will not be as extensive as x64 Vista and above.
