CHILDREN OF MEN WATCH ALONG!

2:33 to skip the intros!!

The weirdest byproduct of Children of Men is that, while almost everyone who sees it loves it, it's really hard to have conversations about. I think people internalize it on a very personal level—almost reverential.

One: There are going to be SPOILERS in this post, but I figure if people have made it this far, they have probably seen the movie already. Two: I felt like you were talking to me when you pointed out the script structure for the "inciting incident". And three: I typed what's to follow on Sunday. Let's see if I learned what you taught me during your live stream. "The inciting incident" was when Owen gets kidnapped and that whole scene. Act one ends with Julianne Moore gets killed. And act three starts when they leave the building to try to get to the boat. The only long take I truly recognized is when they were trying to get to the boat. The other ones I thought were long, but I wasn't sure of because I get to involved in what is going on and don't pay attention to how it's edited. The blood goes away when he gets into the building and looks up the stairwell. So that is probably one "cut". Now I'm waiting for you to someday watch 1917.

Children of Men premiered in the U.S. on January 5, 2007. Just finished my tour in Iraq a couple of months prior to that and hearing that crowd chant "Allahu Akbar" made me feel unsettled in the theatres no doubt...but thats another story. there are parallels to the conflicts in the middle east and a certain prison in Cuba in this film showcasing the fragility of basic human decency. ideology is more important than lives. the most fundamental human experience, A BIRTH, has to happen in secret!!! we see a lot of Theo's feet in this movie and his lack of adequate footwear. He had to be gifted a pair of shoes after all, ironically near the end of his journey. perhaps to suggest how ill equipped we are to handle a global crisis in the real world. yet Theo has enough experience to teach Kee how to comfort her child as he lays dying. maybe there is hope? lots to dig into here, i can't wait to hear everyone's thoughts on this movie. Thank You for the watch along Shan!!! we shared a cry or two. you deserve a 100k+ subscribers. Fuck it, make it a million, cant wait for the next reaction!!!

conversation is easy, motivation is difficult. why do you love it? with all movies i am interested in the why the director shows us what they showed. why are we fixated on Clive Owen's feet? what does Pink Floyd have to do with this movie? connect the dots for us...

would love to watch 1917 with Shan!!! have you seen War Horse and The Water Diviner? both are very great WWI movies!!!

Yeah, the secret cuts. Much more well hidden then say 1917. Funny I rented this movie from block buster. So first watch was at home by myself. I did like it. Was quite surprised people weren’t talking about this movie. See you at the next watch.

it felt super real, almost like Saving Private Ryan, like some part of my subconscious feels like this could/did happen? Very weird, but I agree hard to talk about!

shanellericcio

yes it feels really hidden still! Too art house for some? I think this would hit BIG if it were released today

I'm SURE I saw this movie through Netflix. Because we've been with Netflix since it began! It's astonishing to me that Netflix is now even more relevant than it was in the 90s. Astonishing!

I've seen bits and pieces of this movie over the years, but this was the first time all the way through. When I saw you were doing it I was a little bummed. I'm so glad I was wrong.

When Theo first walks into Nigel's Ark of the Arts facility and sees Michealangelo's "David" with a broken leg, Nigel tells him they tried to save "Pieta" (Michaelangelo's sculpture of Mary holding the dead body of her son Jesus) too but it was lost to a mob. Cuaron gives us this mental imagery early in the film, but as we near the end, he hits us with it again visually. Just before we go into the last long-take of the film, Theo, Kee, and the baby pass a woman in the streets; she is holding the dead and bloodied body of her adult son and wailing to the skies, a living representation of the lost "Pieta".

Could you possibly Enable Downloads on Vimeo, so that I can import your reaction to my editing software to more easily sync it with the movie?
