MILLER'S CROSSING WATCH ALONG!

Comments

Paul Cox

Yeah, this was definitely a smaller film. Not a hit at all. It really gained its enduring acclaim through video rentals and word of mouth. Coming on the heels of Raising Arizona, I think audiences were still confused about what to expect from the Coen brothers. This, Barton Fink, and Hudsucker Proxy are the films that really developed their rep among contemporaneous 90s film buffs, but it wasn't until Fargo dropped in 1996 that the Coens became a mainstream *thing.* This trio of films (between Raising Arizona and Fargo) requires follow-up watches to be more greatly appreciated. I was kinda where you are now the first time I saw Miller's Crossing, so don't feel weird about it. Whether you ever watch it again or not is up to you, but you'll find the vibe with more ease if you choose to.

This movie reminds me of Chinatown because we were with Gabriel Byrne almost the whole time. I noticed the hat and wondered why they focused on it so much as well, but never figured it out.

Love this movie!!! If you like Neo-Noir and mind-blowing dialogue, you should *definitely* check out "Brick". It stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and it's written and directed by Rian Johnson (before he wrote + directed "Looper", "The Last Jedi", and "Knives Out").

I had never seen this movie until now. I actually can't believe the shootout in the mansion to Danny Boy isn't a more iconic scene that every one talks about. Such a cool scene.

Finney was nominated five times for a best actor Oscar four times in the sixties and once for supporting actor for Erin Brockovich. He didn't win. Best supporting actor in 2001 was loaded. Benicio Del Toro won for Traffic, but the other nominees were Joaquin Phoenix for Gladiator, Jeff Bridges for the Contender, and Willem Dafoe for Shadow of the Vampire, along with Finney.
