I really like this film and am so nervous to watch this reaction!

Paul Cox

I'll save my reasons for loving this one so much until after you screen the next one to avoid spoilers, but I'm glad we're on the same page with TLJ.

MotoDork

I like your rainbow blanket thingy.,

My Ex Boyfriend

Yeah I am not sure why people hate on the third set of movies so much. I thought they were good. Better than the originals? No, but still good. I generally just avoided the haters.

MotoDork

Kylo Ren did not try to kill Leia. He was about to blast the ship, but could feel his mother on the bridge, and at the last minute decided not to do it. Then the other two ships that flew in next to him blasted it.

Jayson Phillips

I honestly am happy they made more women take leadership roles in the newer movies

Jayson Phillips

The laundry scene was a tribute to the Indie short film Hardware Wars that came out in 78"

Paul Cox

This might be the highest concentration of people on the internet who like The Last Jedi that I've seen in one place since 2017. It's rough out there. 🤗

Jayson Phillips

I really hope you watch the Mandalorian series and the Obi Wan series now that you seen it all they are really so good and will prolly win all kinds of Emmy's

When I saw this movie, I went to a matinee showing because I was on workers comp at the time. This is the last movie I have seen in a theater. The good: Yay!! puppet Yoda. And Finn has the best line with "Oh, they hate that ship". The bad, or maybe I'll say the weird choices they made: What feels like the slowest chase in space in cinema history. And Leia flying through space (WTF indeed). The ugly: There is no ugly in this. There are a lot of great visuals in this film. When I saw Luke show up at the end with his beard colored I thought "That's weird". I should of known something was up. I'm on your side about Rey using the force. Just because one doesn't have training, doesn't mean they can't use it. I'm guessing the training just helps one focus on how to use the force. I mean I golf but I have never taken a lesson. Does that mean I shouldn't be allowed to golf? I have no problem with the telecommunicating. Kylo did ask why the force is doing it, so it's not like one of them had the power to do that. And as far as powers we see in one movie and not the earlier ones, I had the same thought but realized they can't show all the powers in one movie. Also, in Return of the Jedi, Leia did say she somehow always knew she was related to Luke. So that is sort of like telecommuting. I think I have rambled on enough. I do enjoy this one. On to number IX.

Hi Shanelle i think the thing you have to understand about huge franchises like Star Wars is that the nerds are gonna nerd. i don't use the word "nerd" to be insulting or disrespectful, i consider myself a nerd about all kinds of things especially Star Wars. i dont think people dislike the sequel trilogy because they are bad movies. i think it has to do with how they came to be made. Star Wars has been around 40+ years now. after the original trilogy came out, creative people had decades to create stories with books, comics video games to expand the story until it became a universe unto itself. Then, Disney acquires Lucasfilm and declares all that extra lore doesnt exist. it is Legends now something akin to a Greek myth. all that is real in the Star Wars Universe is Episodes 1-9 and all other Disney era productions. it kinda felt like the fanbase had been disowned by strict and unforgiving parents. this leads to jaded fans to try to find any tiny cracks they can in these films and try to blow holes into them which is what i think youre seeing in comments. and this, of course, leads to fighting and other unnecessary bullshit that's going on to this very day with surrounding all the new shows coming out. i say let us just enjoy the films for what they are and enjoy the positive, constructive discussions that these films deserve and let the nasty comments get buried in dark depths of the internet. personally, i liked The Force Awakens. i got emotional seeing Han, Chewy, Luke and Leia again. it was a really fun movie. as for the Last Jedi...i was totally invested in it. i had a really good time watching it. i did feel that it leaned a little too heavily on The Empire Strikes Back though. some of what i was seeing reminded me of that movie. also, i was kinda disappointed that the characters introduced in the Force Awakens were kinda thrown away in this movie like Captain Phasma and Snoke. i thought they were going to be more important in this trilogy than they turned out to be. it felt like we started to lose direction in this film and Rian Johnson was trying to steer us to a totally new destination and episode nine was gonna try and put us back on course. i cannot wait to watch that movie along with you!!!! and with that i am going to go...well...i already ate so, i guess drink beers and listen to music and stuff!!!!

Just to pick up on what Dan said above. I’ve been a devoted Star Wars fan since 1979, when, at age 5, I saw A New Hope during its re-release. I have and had zero of the feelings described above about the de-canonization of the Expanded Universe, and have taken all the Disney stuff as it’s come. Having done so, I think ROGUE ONE and THE LAST JEDI are better movies than RETURN OF THE JEDI, so there’s that. I’m not sure I wholly understand where all the toxicity comes from. Some of it is surely what Dan said above, at least in part. But there’s also been plenty of misogyny and racism hurled at the sequel trilogy actors. I also think there are many fans who have developed a proprietary attitude toward Star Wars, believing only they could — only they should — be in charge of what happens next, and anyone who’s been in those positions post-Lucas is only there through happenstance. Of course, many of these same people spent the aughts literally saying George Lucas raped their childhoods with the prequels so…🤷‍♂️

Paul Cox

Imagine I just inserted a Charles Foster Kane slow clap gif in this reply.

shanellericcio

this one is better than it's predecessor in the exact way Empire is better than New Hope. That kind of mirroring feels cool to me!! (from a newbie fan) 😂

Paul Cox

They didn't like the way Luke was written, they continued to not like Rey, and they hated Rose so much that Kelly Marie Tran had to leave social media. People are awful and dumb.

shanellericcio

Oh this is excellent context!! Disney ignoring all of the extended stuff--that's annoying!!! I get it way clearer now. Thanks so much for writing. I take these in as a person who's consumed mainstream films only so I get there's a ton that felt disregarded. I don't have high hopes for the next... 😬

shanellericcio

more great context! thanks for helping me get the ~hate~ lol I think this has to be like how I hated the filmmakers for the Harry Potter movies, thinking I knew better how to change the books to films, and now -- I'm like they did a great streamlining them into film form

Nathan Smith

Great! Excellent reaction and I’m so glad you enjoyed it as well. I always get nervous with this film because Star Wars fans can be a bit… critical lol

Paul Cox

I'll be vague, but JJ caved to fan wrath and reversed what I thought was not only the most important takeaway from TLJ, but maybe from the entire saga, in the laziest corniest way possible.

Jason McNeil

A little more on that whole "betrays the logic of Star Wars that Rey can use the force". Since there is so much content for Star Wars, I'm sure there are a lot of things that "betray logic" when you compare it all. I would also like to ask those people if it is logical that Rose and Finn new exactly how the tracker worked and where to go on Snoke's ship to disable it. Finn said he worked sanitation on Star Killer base. So what did he do on his off time, study the technical manuals for everything First Order.

Jayson Phillips

When I was little Hardware Wars was the funniest thing on TV, they made a parody of SW a new hope, Ham Salad, Chewchilla, Artee Deco, and all the spaceships were Tools like the Falcon was an Iron and storm troopers were trash cans I think? Chewbacca was a cookie monster doll. It was very creative and funny!

Jason Chirevas

This one came in for the most misogyny and racism for sure. If there’s one thing white supremacist incel nerds hate it’s women in charge of a Star Wars story, which is basically what TLJ was. Meanwhile, Rose is one of the best Star Wars characters period (reasoning upon request, heh) and it was long past time for women other than Leia to have influential roles in Star Wars. As for Luke, my theory for that hate was these same “fans” spent the last 20 years in robes at conventions only for Rian Johnson to come along and crystallize what was painfully obvious in six-plus hours of the prequels: EVERYTHING about the Jedi and how they handled things was blind, dogmatic, and erroneous. And, once Luke learned that and tried to change it…only to have things go haywire again, he said eff this and took off. Tough to accept for all of us but a bold, plausible narrative choice. It also led directly to the idea The Force is not just for Chosen Ones, something that had tremendous potential for future storytelling. Alas…

Jason Chirevas

As long as we’re calling out references, the long, push-in, single-take establishing shot in the Canto Bight casino is a direct homage to a similar shot in 1927’s WINGS, the first-ever Academy Award winner for Best Picture.

Jayson Phillips

Oh yeah!!! I forgot about that!! that was great. Also that Mark Hamill did the little guy pushing coins into BB8. Not much of a voice over but still cool lol.

Dee Aitch

To answer a couple of questions you had: the red guys are analogous to the royal guard from Jedi. They were just bodyguards with more loyalty to Snoke than Kylo. The spaceships didn't split from the lightsaber splitting -- Holdo engaged lightspeed while pointing at the big ship, which means she rammed it at a really fast speed. I don't think anyone will have issue with the distance communication, as in Star Wars, we have Vader sensing Ben, and then in TESB there's literal distance communication between Luke and Leia. You mentioned you ratio of old to new was 60:40. There's a ton of hate out there for this film in particular. And while I'm sure there's some racism and misogyny fueling some of it, I think a large part of this is that these people are more like 90:10, and when faced with this film which took a whole new direction from what we've seen before they simply reacted badly. Also there's a Youtube review video as long as the movie itself that fuels this feeling even more. Me, I'm more of a 20:80 person. I thought it was extremely novel that we had a bad guy that wasn't a Palpatine son or lackey. I love that Rey was from nobodies instead of being a cloned twin sister of Luke. We had the kid with the broom at the end who basically says: the force is there for everyone in the universe, not just a certain family. With Lucas coming up with incestuous twist after twist the franchise had become far too insular. I absolutely love the visuals. I find the more slapstick humor to be fine (there was always humor in the original films, largely from Han). And the visuals are insanely beautiful (with a throne room fight scene worthy of Kill Bill). And I love Rose's line "That's how we're going to win -- not fighting what we hate, but saving what we love". That said there are some real issues with the film. The casino side quest is useless in advancing the plot any at all, just an excuse to proselytize "arms dealers are bad guys". The line about Rose punching her fist through this beautiful and horrible town is about as bad of a line as you can write. And having Holdo withhold information from her crew for zero reason is sitcom levels of lazy writing. Please don't take to heart the comments. Your valuation of the movie in your own eyes is as valid as anyone else's opinions on the film. Personally I love this film, and consider it the best non-original-trilogy numbered film ("Rogue One" is better). Just be aware that there's a lot of online hate for this one and there will be some unnecessary comments made.

Jason Chirevas

Two(ish) things… I think the Canto Bight sequence is too long, and a bit indulgent, but I think it serves a few purposes. First, it shows there are parts of the galaxy completely unconcerned with the wars we’ve spent eight movies watching, and a lot of that world is a bloated, gilded orgy of excess. And another part of it, likely the much larger part, is poor people to which no one pays any attention. I love Rose’s anger throughout that sequence because she and her sister were two of those poor nobodies who dared to think they could have some effect on what was happening beyond them by joining the Resistance. And then Paige died because it, and Rose ended up in a place built on that bloated excess with someone, Finn, who couldn’t understand any of it. Plus, that sequence set up the broom kid which, again, could have, should have, been the beginning of a lot interesting stuff. And, yes, it’s not a bad point, especially in Star Wars, to say hey, you know there’s industry enabling all this endless war, by the way. Pretty bold, in fact, in a Hero’s Journey story made principally from 30s pulp. Last thing. Shan, not sure if there’s any trepidation putting this reaction on YT but there needn’t be. You’re a voice in the discourse now. That’s legit. You’re also someone coming to these movies from a different, fresh perspective. It’s a good thing for Star Wars, and especially THE LAST JEDI, to be seen this way, as I think your evaluation is probably fairer than most. That’s going to be important as the Skywalker saga passes further into history as it’s — sadly, shockingly — now destined to do.

Nick of Time

I mostly agree. When I say I hate the sequel trilogy, its largely because of IX; VII and VIII I actually really enjoyed.

Jason Chirevas

There are aspects of Ep. IX that are fun….and they are trampled to death by a cascade of horrible decisions and storytelling.
