I definitely like the watch along better without the blur! Thank you for watching Tremors. It is one of the many, many movies from the early 90s that I might as well never have watched because I had VERY young kids then. Always nice to have an excuse to fill in the many, many gaps in my movie memories!

"Yes...GUTS!" You made this so fun. You're right, the first time I saw this was a $.49 vhs rental from Blockbuster. I was surprised to hear you say your favorite "monster movie" is Jurassic Park, but you didn't clock Ariana Richards. That's baby Lex playing Mindy.

i turned 5 years old in 1990. i definitely first saw this movie on VHS because my mom bought this movie. when/where/how she first saw it i have no clue but this movie was constantly playing while i was growing up in the 90's!!! it is just a stupid good time to have in the background while getting through the mundane existence of life as it unfolds in front of you. so happy you finally reacted to this!!! i have watched pretty much all the featurettes about the making of this movie over the years. the main inspiration for this film was in fact the movie Jaws!!! the writers pondered, what would a film like Jaws look like miles away from water? Tremors is what they came up with. the actress who plays Mindy would go on to play Lex in Jurassic Park, a connection i didnt make until my adult years. Fred Ward, who plays Earl, had a respectable film career. may he Rest in Peace. the actor who plays Burt had leading role in a sitcom that i havent watched prior to this movie. i dont know of any other movies Reba has been in. she did have a sitcom later but, other than that, she is best known as a country music star as far as i know. for the franchise as a whole, this movie is the diamond in the rough. i personally really enjoyed Tremors 2: Aftershocks but i will admit it is not as great as the first movie. the actors who play Burt and Earl reprise their role in the first sequel. might be good for the channel??? idk!!! i think there are 2 sequels after the second movie, as well as a prequel, are pretty much garbage imo. there was a short lived TV series as well which was not so great. so, i would personally enjoy a reaction to the second movie if that means anything??? this was so much fun!!! one of my favorites of your reactions from you so far!!! looking forward to more!!! my love to you and your dearest!!! see ya on the next one!!!

i will admit, i have loved Tremors and Jurassic Park since i was a child in 90's and didnt make the connection that the girl who plays Mindy is the same girl who plays Lex in Jurassic Park until recently.

Yeah, talk about growing quickly. It's like she doubled in height in under three years.

Why is it that my least confident reactions get the best reviews from y'all!? I don't know anything about myself clearly haha

shanellericcio

I didn't see the Mindy Jurassic connection! but i did think she looked super familiar!! If I'm not confident i don't say anything because I hate looking dumb. haha but I should just be "wrong" more, its fun!

I was getting Jaws vibes as well. The practical effects look good in this. If this was made today I think they would of gone over the top with the CGI. I also prefer the watch along when the movie is not blurred.

I've always had fun with this movie. It's not a deep classic like Jaws, Predator, or my personal favorite (and nemesis) Alien, but it fulfills one key aspect of "monster" movies for me: It's not a werewolf, a zombie, or a vampire. Good monster movies with interesting monsters can be hard to come by and the classic three I just listed are done so often in various fashion, they're cliche.

This is one of those movies where the subsequent "legend" - namely that it was a B-movie that flopped at the box office but later became a cult classic via home video and TV - does not tell the whole story, and, quite frankly, spares Hollywood's blushes. In fact, it was an early-ish (circa 1982) project for the writers - who had a sizeable hit with "Short Circuit" (which was in itself arguably a B-movie concept that attracted major backing) in 1986, leading to the resurrection of the project. The screenplay is as tight as a drum - not quite at the same level as, say, "Back To The Future" - but not far off. Almost every aspect of the staging and dialogue serves as setup and payoff, and while it is very much a homage to the "monster movies" of the '50s, it both uses and subverts the tropes of the genre very effectively. Production-wise, the studio got Pacific Western [The Terminator, Aliens, The Abyss] involved (as such, Gale Anne Hurd's name is in the credits as Executive Producer), which is as strong an indication as any that they had higher hopes for the movie than they later let on. Reading between the lines, "Tremors" was a B-movie homage that involved both industry veterans and up-and-coming talent, to the extent that Universal seemingly didn't really have an idea how to market it in terms of a theatrical release - or, to put it more bluntly, they had a far more solid movie than they thought they had. Kevin Bacon infamously took the job because he felt his career was stalling and he needed the work - and he maintained that position for *years*. Nowadays, he considers it one of the most enjoyable experiences he's ever had working on a movie and is proud to have been a part of it. What makes "Tremors" somewhat unusual in the canon of movies considered "cult classics" - specifically the subset of those which struggled as a theatrical release, but later became a hit through home video and TV - is that far from being "so bad that it's actually good", it is objectively a genuinely good movie in all relevant respects - writing, acting and cinematography are all very much on point.
