Hey everyone,

I appreciated your feedback with the solarpunk video, and I've decided to keep it up. And that seems to be the right choice, as it seems to be a slow burn video when it comes to gaining views.

Otherwise for the longest time I've been looking into starting a podcast (with a failed attempt or two), and there are many cool ideas and formats that I could do. But the problem persists, I still have not started one.

Generally what I'm looking for is for something that is not too work intensive to take away from the main channel videos, but also something that is worth listening too, especially if we can teach people ideas and concepts. So if you have a general idea or maybe a fun concept to follow I'm all ears.

I'm also friends with a decent number of creators not directly related to urban planning/transit per say, so I could also put something together that's more broad that could be a hook to bring more people in from other places. So don't limit the ideas to Planning, transit, and railroading necessarily.

Either way I look forward to your input!

Alan

PS. the next Armchair Urbanist will either be about the Amtrak long distance Fleet or an Underrated Cities list

Honestly what I'd do if I was starting a podcast is just talk about trips everyone's gone on. What made the trip good, what spoiled the fun, things you did on the trip, stuff like that. Bonus points if it was a train trip. Maybe bring on some friends of the show too, to get their stories.

Reach out to the Radio Free Urbanism people their podcast is pretty good. It has Ethan from climate and transit.

one of the higher effort ideas that I've had for a podcast is to do one onboard Amtrak/transit while sitting next to someone on a route that they pick and then interviewing them. Similar to the subway guy, but more focused on the actual route that we're on

What if you appear as a regular podcast guest instead of trying to host? I was really excited when you appeared on WTYP. Maybe go on Gareth Dennis' show. Other ideas: Things just changed overnight for NYC and Chicago with the election of Mayor Mamdani and NITA replacing RTA respectively. There are a lot of implications from these developments that could make for video or podcast topics.

I'll second Henry's railroad history idea but that seems to be covered in general by a few other people unless you have a different take. Possibly railroads and politics which you seem more informed about than most people (and certainly me). For example, why were certain rail lines removed from the original Amtrak back in the 70s even when they were popular and profitable (like my original hometown of Green Bay which had daily trips to Milwaukee until 1971). However I wonder if that might be a huge time suck in itself.

Alan, Michigan has moved to fix the Detroit Amtrak station problem. How about an overview if Michigan rail past present and future. The Straights of Mackinac is a good candidate for a cut and immerse a rail highway tunnel to finally link the two peninsulas together. The Michigan DOT just had their annual meeting and there was NO presentation by passenger or freight rail. A movie title might be "The land rail forgot" Keep up the good work.

I'd enjoy any more Nj/Philly area transit stuff you felt like doing. It's kind of the thing that first drew me to your channel, and while I love the expansion in scope, The local stuff hits particularly for me personally.

I like the history idea as well. Maybe use topographical maps and maybe search for hidden remnants of the lines? One in particular I have hiked is Central New England Railway which I believe was dismantled in the 30s -- there are so many hidden cutouts and fills, many of which can only be seen during the winter . There is at least one train accident story on this line in Simsbury/Tariffville CT that others may be interested in. Another is Hartford Providence & Fishkill, much of which is a rail trail, but I have a postcard of Bolton Notch before the rails were removed. Might be a subject for an extended AU series instead of a podcast?
