“No, that won’t be necessary. I think we need to be underway before that ship arrives though,” I answered, quickly reviewing the data on the ship and its captain. “Don’t you find it utterly ridiculous that Starfleet is still fielding a ship that was first designed and constructed in the 2280s?? Refit after refit after refit has been required to keep it somewhat up to date. It’s not like the Federation doesn’t have the resources or shipbuilding capacity to construct new ships. The Federation is going to pay in blood for fielding so many different old classes of ship that they’ve just kept refitting instead of replacing altogether.”

B’Elanna looked interested.

“I said the same thing when I was at the Academy. My thoughts were not well received,” she complained in a sour, annoyed voice. “Objectively, the resource costs in maintaining and refitting these old ships actually exceeds the cost of building new ones.”

“If I had to guess, it’s on purpose, to limit the power of Starfleet and keep it from becoming too militaristic by the member states, or some bullshit like that. They’ll wish they had more new, state-of-the-art ships before long, I guarantee it,” I said. “Anyways, Doctor, I’d like a report from you as well.”

Excelsior class

The Excelsior-class was a type of Federation starship used by Starfleet between the late 23rd and late 24th centuries. It was the backbone of Starfleet for over a century, making it one of the most long-serving starship designs and one of the fleet's most recognizable ships.

War sage

Yea, Starfleet kept alot of designs from the 23rd century in wide use, with the Excelsior, Miranda and Oberth being the big example, and while I agree that with possible exception of support roles the Miranda and Oberth have outlived their use as ships of the line, the Excelsior's as proven by the refit the Lakota got still have some life left in them Also it does seem Starfleet was building a new series of starship classes based on the galaxy class, the Nebula class being the prime example, other's can be seen among the wreaks of wolf 359, though it seems they were discontinued.

I actually like the Excelsior-class myself. I always imagined that Starfleet just keep using the hull shape while building them with the latest in technology. There is a real world example of this the US Navy's Arleigh Burke-class destroyers which have four separate flights. Also like War sage pointed out the refit of the Lakota showed that the Excelsior-class still had life.
