Konstantin Stanislavski's System, or "Method Acting", is one of the most profoundly influential aesthetic/intellectual movements of the twentieth-century.

The System ranks up there with Freud's unconscious and Einstein's theory of relativity for just how far its tendrils of influence reach.

Look to any great actor of the Western tradition in the last hundred years - Marlon Brando, Daniel Day Lewis, Christian Bale - and they are almost certainly using some variation or degree of method acting.

But Stanislavski makes for riveting reading even for those of us not pursuing the art of acting. His Building A Character, in particular, goes through a number of precepts that can help our imaginations bring these Great Books to life.

My 2 takeaways are: 1. Don't make reading my hiding place, it is meant to enhance life. Definitely this can be a problem for me, but it's so much healthier than alcohol! ;-) 2. Unless reading a book can enoble you, flee from it. I am loving being back into the classics and giving much less time to the latest, hotest, best-sellers. Never will I go back to reading for number goals and quantity over quality.

This was so interesting, Ben! Like Florian, I used to intuitively read this way, as a child. Without even realising it, I would adopt the speech patterns and expressions of a book character I’d become particularly enamoured with. I no doubt seemed a terribly affected and pretentious child! Funny, I’d forgotten all about this until I heard this lecture.

So much time has passed since, you reminded me of this lecture which I’m utterly keen now to listening to again, thanks Chrissy!
