What is a magic lantern?

Who is Genevieve de Brabant?

Who is Golo?

Today we answer these questions and, in doing so, hopefully, beg several more questions.

Please share any meditations or musings you might have, great or small, and let us know what you make of the magic lanterns.

Did we lose something in moving beyond magic lanterns to more modern forms of cinema?

If so, what was that "something"? And how can we get it back?

Happy Prousting!

"there appears to be something in all of us that offers an innate reverence upon viewing projected images. There is a mystical quality to the reinterpretation of life that seems to entice us. Is it the light that represents the divine or the ritualistic congregation around symbolic representations that have awakened our unconscious minds and transform us into votive beings." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UzXBmhzOI5g

With every advancement in technology, certainly in relation to the Arts, you gain something, and you lose something. Imagine being in the room when the first "movie" of a train coming at you had the audience screaming and running for the exits. Novelty wears thin quickly. Now we contain the world in a plastic phone in our back pocket. A better world; doubtful. I think the "magic" of the magic lantern was partly novelty and also it was a family event. Fast forward to today; a family at a restaurant each looking into their own magic lanterns (iphones) and failing to communicate. I think we have lost a lot.
