Dear Book Club Readers ---

You seem really excited about mythology, the hero's journey, and the works of Joseph Campbell.

As this area of study has been a deep passion of mine for years, I cannot express how happy I am that you're treating yourselves to books like The Hero with a Thousand Faces.

So I decided to show you my old, potentially out-of-print, and well-loved copies of two books:

I was scouting some locations for upcoming lectures and a documentary in the pipeline called 'Shakespeare's Kings and Queens'. As many are mythological/grounded in folklore, I found myself pulled to the heart of nature.

As I enjoy taking my books to forests and riversides, I had them with me and was inspired to do an off-the-cuff show-and-tell for you.

Happy questing, everybody!

I’m about 70% through your annotation video on YouTube. Have you ever considered adding cut sized blank pieces of paper to the books. I’ve started doing it and found it very practical.

Amazing to hear that, Josh. My personal annotation approach has shifted a little since making that video so I must do an update soon. That's a very interesting idea. I've done something similar with loose-leaf sheets inserted in the books, which really makes the book my creation of sorts :)

It's amazing how inherently attached we humans are to mythological stories and the hero's quest. Just look at the box office. Every Marvel movie, regardless of their quality, is bound to be profitable. The same can be said for other action movies that follow the same, simple formula without much variation. One would have thought that we'd be sick of the same story being rehashed, but that is clearly not the case. Campbell's textbook may provide some insights to this phenomenon, and I'm excited to embark on that journey alongside Siddhartha and Don Quixote. Thanks for adding the hero lecture series!

Thank you for such beautifully formulated insights, Fiona. We certainly are in a bit of a Marvel/superhero streak film-wise right now, aren't we? I often wonder what that says about our collective unconscious. Now seemingly more than ever, we hunger to be the hero in our own lives. The extraordinary thing is we can keep telling the same story again and again, but with unique flourishes and details we'll never tire of it. Christopher Booker maintains there are only ~7 stories and we tell them ad infinitum. Kurt Vonnegut, if I recall correctly, thought there were only 2-3 - and even those have extraordinary overlap. Excited to have you along on the adventure, Fiona :)
