Dear Book Club Readers ---

I hope your reading is treating you well!

Here's a little bit of Book Club housekeeping/admin for the month.

1) A very warm HLBC welcome to new patrons

Welcome aboard, and thank you for joining the club!

Do let us know which book(s) you're enjoying at the moment and what life is looking like for you.

2) Coffee with Hardcore Literature

Do you have any questions about reading the Great Books? Or, indeed, anything else?

If so, please do let me know either here or PM me and I would love to sit down with a coffee and record my answers.

Here are the last three Q&A episodes, and our recent celebration show:

3) Bookish Content

Our next Moby Dick lecture is right around the corner, and so is our deep-dive into the first five chapters of Blood Meridian (plus a surprise for Cormac fans).

We have more Shakespeare, as always, as we make our way through Othello and Antony and Cleopatra before preparing to read the Comedies.

We also have our next instalment of George Eliot's Middlemarch, a Bible lecture on the book of Job, a short story reading assignment and recommended daily practice, a breakdown of the first two books of Plato's Republic, and so much more.

4) Thank you for your great comments

Thank you for continuing to make this such a great community to lovingly discuss great literature. We have a real literary oasis here filled the the kindest, most intelligent, and passionate readers. I'm so grateful for you all.

5) Personal Update

As you may have been able to tell from recent videos on Homer and Blood Meridian, I am finally settled in my new abode, and am now faced with the important matter of arranging my books. Thank you all for the well wishes!

And that's all for now, folks!

Happy reading, and let us know if you have any questions for our Q&A show!

Vicky

Hi everyone we have a lot Of Threads going in now don’t we 😂 gives me plenty to keep me occupied. I finished Crime and Punishment last night have a few of your lectures on it still to watch Ben but am proud of reading it. I had a lot of thoughts on it - but I did enjoy it and found it an interesting portrait of a young man building up to an awful deed and the impact on his mental state. I didn’t like the epilogue quite so much in terms of outcome but I found it touching to know he’d have been drawing on some personal experience at that point. I am also about 80 per cent through Blood Meridian (it’s been a happy few weeks lol). Am using a book I found of notes on his sources and now will use your lectures too. Am finding it a mixed experience - beautiful writing. Graphic violence lots to animals which I find awful - some of it I find my eyes glazing over a bit though and I don’t know why?? Assuming it’s maybe part of the point, desensitised as they were? Looking forward to discussing it all together . Question for you is - what Russian Novel should I breach next 😂the version of C and P I read on kindle (I know sacrilege) had pop up notes to help me understand more about cultural allusions and circumstances which really helped.

We've definitely got some incredible threads going on. Scrolling through what everyone is writing about these books is easily one of my favourite things to do. And congratulations on finishing Crime and Punishment, Vicky. And 80% through Blood Meridian! Oh, yes, happy, happy stuff... :) Wonderful question. I have a few Russian novels that leap immediately to mind that I look forward recommending to you on the show :)

Literary oasis is exactly what it is :) Congrats on the move, Ben! I’ve moved somewhere around 30 times in my 35 years and would do pretty much anything to avoid having to do it again, it sure takes a lot of physical and emotional energy. Always wonderful to have a new space to fill with books though, eh? I’ve just finished Anna Karenina, which was the book that brought me to Hardcore Literature Book Club, and now stands as one of my absolute favorites, so thank you for that. And I’m working through Blood Meridian and Middlemarch with the club currently, as well as dipping in and out of Paradise Lost, Shakespeare, and Augustine’s Confessions, and working slowly through 3 biographies of 3 of my favorite writers - Tolstoy, Emerson, and Flannery O’Connor - alongside a reread of their shorter works. I’ve had the Emerson and O’Connor bios on my shelf for ages and figured this was finally the year to tackle them. I’m very tempted to pick up Les Miserables for the first time and follow along with the book club lectures on that, but I’m not sure I’ll be able to add that on to the already teetering pile, especially with work starting back up soon for me after some time off for health reasons. As far as questions - everyone else has come up with some great ones, I’m just looking forward to hearing answers to theirs!

Thank you for the well wishes, Cai :) I appreciate that a lot. 30 times in 35 years - wow! That's an incredible amount of moving. I used to move around a lot, from country to country, when I was younger, but my nomadic spirit is pretty much gone, and I would give anything to let roots grow in one location now - preferably a green, quiet location with lots of country walks :) Your reading sounds incredible as always. Anna Karenina is a beautiful one. It's a personal touchstone for me. I'll be doing another deep-reading of it in the year ahead, and cannot wait to meet up with the old gang. It's great to see you've been reading Emerson and Flannery O'Connor. I love them both. Emerson is one of those writers who comforts me in times when few else can. He speaks straight to my soul. I'm sorry to hear about your health issues, I do hope everything is okay with you now, Cai. Continue looking after yourself! We value you 🙏
