If a benevolent God exists, why do bad things happen to good people?

This question is at the heart of one of the most difficult works of wisdom literature, the sublime, poetic, and profound parable of the Book of Job.

We are once again reading from the King James Bible in a way that will hopefully illuminate our experience of great works of imaginative literature.

Do let us know your thoughts on the story of Job, and, if you haven't already, check out our video on the Book of Jonah.

Ben. This lecture was sublime for me. I’m reading the Old Testament this year and I’m totally riveted with what I am reading and finding it so powerful. Please continue doing these lectures on the Bible as Literature. I agree with you that the KJV is very poetic. I love learning how the great authors that we are reading in HLBC were influenced by scripture.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the Book of Job and then, thank you, for the lecture which cleared up several points. I had of course missed heaps in my read through and I’m so glad I took the time between chapters of Moby Dick to read and listen to Job.
