Two short stories that I would recommend, the kind that messes with your brain, you know, the best kind, are: A Good Man is Hard to Find by Flannery O’Connor and Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? by Joyce Carol Oates.

Jo Ann Hinkle

For me, the most frightening ghost/horror tales are the ones I read when I was much younger and more impressionable. “The Red Lodge” by H. R. Wakefield (I read this in the 6th grade. My mom bought me a collection of ghostly tales titled More Tales to Tremble By. This story in particular creeped me out.) “The White People” by Arthur Machen (A 9th grade discovery. This was the first story in a collection edited by Damon Knight. I was mesmerized and when I finished reading, it was a “wtf did I just read” moment. “The Haunter of the Dark” and “Dreams in the Witch House” by H. P. Lovecraft (I realize Lovecraft is a problematic author these days but at the time (1972), his views on race were unknown to me and Lovecraft as a writer was largely unknown to the reading public. I’d never heard of him before finding a yellowed copy of his stories in the corner of a used bookstore. But he terrified me without showing the monster. He suggested, hinted, and gave but a shadowy glimpse. “The Haunter of the Dark” ends with the phrase “…the three-lobed burning eye…” I had no idea what that was but it scared the hell out of me. “Count Magnus” by M. R. James “The Beckoning Fair One” by Oliver Onions
