Today we're talking about a topic that is very close to my heart. We're discussing how to deepen our friendships with our favourite authors.

I'll provide some recommended approaches for different kinds of special author (poet, playwright, novelist) along with some advice for reading multiple works simultaneously and how to get the most out of an author deep dive.

Topics include: improving reading attention through mindfulness, literary heterocosms, how to become the first reader, mindsets for reading prolific writers, and much more.

I'm glad you mentioned Emily Brontë, as she has been my favourite author and poet for many years (since reading Wuthering Heights for my A level) , but I wasn't sure if she would work for my special author. I reread Wuthering Heights endlessly, but have her juvenile writing, many biographies and much of her poetry to read and reread. I'm excited to make her my special author.

I was recently introduced to the works of Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath and will focus on them for my author project. I intend to visit Heptonstall this summer where Sylvia is buried. I have been able to borrow a first edition of her published diaries. I’ve bought copies of ‘Ariel’, ‘The Bell Jar’ both by Plath and ‘Birthday Letters’ and ‘Crow’ by Hughes to get me started. It’s going to be another great summer of reading. My husband has been waiting avidly for the Lord of the Rings lectures to start, he’s an ardent Tolkien fan. Thank you Benjamin for another wonderful instalment.
